pretty good. saw lots of other cyclists, most looked like commuters. waved to one, he waved back.

I was less than a block from home when a lady with a cane waved me over to her driveway. Her husband had been hurt in a bike accident that AM. He was fit enough to get his MTB and Lemond road bike up onto the Thule roof rack and locked into place before she drove him to the hospital. There, the doctors required him to stay for over night care. Now she is home and unable to get the bikes off of the car. Then I grind by on our 10% hill. I couldn't get them unlocked either. The local lbs was still open and I sent her there. Her SUV had enough room in the back for the bikes with the wheels off. She had been stymied for a while as almost all the neighbors are in their 80s.

Funny day. It's the longest day of the year for my work, but I'm also 9 days out from my "A" race triathlon, so I got up at 5, rode to the gym, swam for 2000m, rode home, changed, rode to work, rode to a TNT meeting, rode back to the office, and here I am. And I'll be here until after midnight.
They say you can't have a family, a full-time job, and train for a triathlon at the same time. I'm hoping that's not really the case. |
left a bit earlier than usual this morning intending to detour towards the strip mall and find something a person could eat while at work. backfired a bit since i didn't, but it was kind of nice anyway to start the day with a whole hour of moseying around in an indian grocery store under my belt. nothing eventful in either direction, as far as i recall. just clear, a bit cold, with a headwind going in and a bit of a tailwind as i came home. i showered with the actual 'soap' they have in the dispensers there, which could have been an awful mistake.

light traffic today - I think it must be the holiday weekend. No cramps so I think Wednesday was a fluke and I'm EXTREMELY glad of that!
|
My commute this morning was absolutely incredible. The traffic was lighter than normal....holiday weekend :D . I made the best time ever...32:51 for 8.3 miles, only caught one light. The one just passed GA400 on Windward Pkwy. All the cagers were pretty nice this morning. They stayed out of my way, and I stayed out of theirs.
I saw this really cute lady on a Wally World mtb going the wrong way, on the sidewalk, and no helmet. She smiled at me while I was grinding my way up the hill that she was going down. I thought about telling her everything she was doing wrong, but then I thought why ruin the moment? She was just too cute I guess;) Anyway...this morning was great. |
50F this morning, 10deg. less than yesterday morning; Fall is in the air.
On yesterday afternoon's commute I dropped a semi! :) Ok, so it was fully loaded with gravel, about 1/4 mi from its destination, from a dead stop at a stoplight, going up a hill, but I made it up the hill and around the corner to the next street before the semi did. Woot! Today was supposed to be an "easy" recovery commute. Avg spd = 16.3 mph. Yesteray's avg spd = 15.5 mph. Yay for Mechanic Andy @ LBS who unfoobar'd my rear derailleur! :D Easy route today made use of the MUP alongside the 45mph, 4 lane, divided, street I take for the "fast route". MUP + intersections + road bike = thump thump :( |
Winddddyyyyy. Took me about 5 minutes longer today with the same effort of most days. At least that means the wind will be at my back on the way home.
|
Grrr...my hand's still bugging me. Seems particularly tender today, maybe that's a sign that it's going to heal before I leave town tomorrow. Nothing else to report. Ride was pretty good this morning.
|
It was my first commute in today, woohoo! Well technically a split commute since to ride the whole way in would be about 18-20 miles. So I drove 1/2 way and road 1/2 way, hopefully I'll drive less and less the more I do this.
I also got lost a bit (should have driven the route first I guess) but luckily found my way back on track, added about 3 miles onto my estimate. My workplace has allowed me to keep my bike in my office which is nice (so I can gaze lovingly at it while I type this....I mean so it stays dry/doesn't get stolen :) ). The guy in the office next to me said he was jealous of me for riding in and is thinking of doing it too! So overall it has been a good start to commuting, I want to thank everyone who posts in this commuting forum, I've gotten alot of great ideas and encouragment from everyone's experiences. |
Perfect temps and the promise of a tailwind this evening...
Legs felt weak, though - I don't think I lost any time off my usual ride, but I seemed a little labored on the flats and I felt a lot tireder grinding up the last climb into town than I'm comfortable with. I had a minor bonk on Wednesday night, after adding about 24 miles of gravel and 6 miles of mtb'ing to my regular 10 mile ride home - and not supporting that with timely eating, so I'm not sure if this is related to that, or not. I'm gonna assume it is, for now. I've started writing down observations like this and recording what I'm eating daily, just to see if I can spot the correlations. |
I've been having oodles of fun on my commutes since I got the Trek. There are lots of dirt trails I've been exploring. My ride home yesterday consisted of a trip through woods and then a field of 6-foot tall weeds on a path barely wide enough for the handlebars. I got home with seeds stuck to my jersey. I wife said, "Did you fall?!" :D I just grinned and explained what I had been up to.
I also found a very steep hill and went to the bottom of it, then decided to see how easy it would be to climb it. Low gear, and I spun right up, grinning like a maniac the whole time. This morning I went up on a trail I've seen MTBers pop out of before. Nice views of Lake Champlain, but the steep, narrow descent back to the MUP was scary. I went sssssslowly. :o I should bring a camera sometime. |
No commute today. Ernesto. :(
The weather really wasn't that bad this morning, and one of the other commuters from my building rode today. But I have a pregnant wife..... |
4C when I woke up. I over compensated with too much clothing.

No exploring. Took the new high traffic route to confirm that it is indeed faster. 10 minute improvement over my normal time with exhausted legs.
|
Not sure if warmer but definitely sunnier riding in today. Back on flatbar road-y bike after a week+ of mtn biking. Felt squished.
|
Nice ride this morning. I started chatting with another rider on the train. He and one of his coworkers have started riding part of the way to their job at the airport. The three of us teamed up for the first mile of my commute before I turned north and they continued west. It was nice to have a small crew of cyclists with whom to brave the most treacherous section of road. The rest of my commute was nice. Quiet today. Not alot of traffic. The legs were a little tired today though, end of the week and all.
One oddity of the ride had to do with air temperatures. It was weird. Mostly the morning was cool. But at random intervals I would pass through a little spot of warmer air, then it would dip down again. Almost like swimming in a lake where sections are warmer than others for reasons both natural and (yech) manmade. |
I greased my chain before i went out to day and i don't know why i don't do it more often. My bike was completely quiet and the ride seemed easier as well. It was windy for the most part, but the 17km ride to and from the shop was great (except for a section of the road under construction).
|
Completely uneventful today. I did stop to take a picture of my bike and post it in the commuter bike pics thread, though.
|
Beautiful weather today! :) Today also marks my first full week of bike commuting. I only rode three days last week, but this week I got to ride all five. My total mileage was 52.3 for the week.
|
OK it's hot out!
|
Beautiful weather in the south today as well. This is our first full week out of the 90º's, we are even going to have lows in the upper 60º's tonight.

Had a run in with a major redneck this afternoon on the way home. He said he would kick my a$$. I told him to come on....and I'd be glad to call the police. I got his tag number and called the Alpharetta Police. The took down the tag number but said there was really nothing they can do:mad: . So now I've got the tag number and I'm going to find out who owns the truck. I hope its a business. I think an e-mail to the business owner letting him/her know how people are representing the business in public will do wonders.
Outside of the redneck and the police....the rest of the ride was good. I went an extra 10km to go by my LBS and pick up a new blinkie for the road bike. I'll put that on tomorrow. |
I've been riding with my club's beginner group. Rode with the intermediate group last night. We were going so fast my HR monitor was showing my caslculated max HR, and they sped up. I just hung on . It sure made mew consider driving in today. The ride in was good for loosening up some seriously stiff legs. Ride home was nice. I'm working all weekend, so I'm keeping an eye out for drunk drivers. Ride safe.
