today's commute
Rode into Manhattan from Brooklyn today, took it nice and easy, I'm recovering from a lower back injury. Gorgeous ride, throughh Prospect Park, over the Manhattan Bridge, then, BLAM- NYC Gridlock. The United Nations has some major goings on, plus demonstrations, it was 20 blocks of weaving through narrow gaps between trucks and buses, some sidewalk hopping, all the good road warrior stuff. Very slow going, but exhilarating nonetheless. I just want to comment that I ride clipless but when it gets a bit heavy with traffic with lots of stopping, I ride with my right foot unclipped, this way I can plant it at a moments notice if need be. I wonder if anyone else does this.

Awesome ride....beat the rain :)
|
I had words with a driver who tried to use my bike lane to pass a long line of traffic on the right. On the one hand, I wish I had just let it go rather than letting myself carry on an argument with self-centered jerk. I probably could have just trackstanded ("trackstood"?) in front of the car long enough to make the point that using the bikelane isn't any faster and not directly confronted her.
But, on the other hand, this person's actions were stupid, selfish, illegal, and dangerous. And I called her on it. I think her anger and irrationality weren't about my blocking her way, as much as embarrassing her in front of a long line of slow moving traffic. Still, I'm lucky that she didn't pull out a gun or just stomp on the accelerator and kill me with her car. (I must really do something about this stubbornness; one day it's going to get me killed. |
abbreviated. Commute today and yesterday limited to .8 miles to and from Thing 1's kindergarten. Today he toughed it out in the rain, I was pleased ('but there's holes in my helmet, my head will get wet!!'). Riding next to or behind him in ~22" gear, get new appreciation for hazards of toe overlap.
Yesterday drove 2 hrs each way for goofy meeting, today drove into work to return company car from yesterday. Bike home, though. Maybe go for jaunt at lunchtime too. |
second day bike to work. Awkward but Ok.
This is my second day of biking to work. The first one was this Mon. It was nice day of riding with my new bike.
I found out the front tire flatted when I started out of door  . Fixed it right away :) . Ran out of door. Realized I did not put brake pad on  . Put it on right away :) . Ran again. Found out computer is not working caused by wheel installed in wrong direction  . Ran back home and fixed it there :) . And found out that I also forgot my helmet. Finally sailed out. One miles later, I started sweatting and learned that front brake pad had been always hugging wheel  . Stopped and fixed it :) . And then, guess what, every thing was fine since then. The ride was nice, no traffic, nice wheather :D |
A 40 deg f morning. I know its cold when I start wearing tights, long sleeves, and earband. Until today, I had only added arm warmers for the first 1/2 of the morning, but my knees were starting to hurt. It feels good not to sweat.
|
It was the second day in a row that I had to come in an hour early for work. &*$^#@*($#*$&!!! I hate mornings.

Welcome to the Happy Healthy Commuting Mother F*ckers (HHCMF) club mxu! This is teh most awesomest club on tha intarweb cuz we ride bikes better than cagers drive cars and we look good doing it! We're lusted after by the opposite sex for our incredible physiques and we're the envy of our colleagues for being able to eat all the doughnuts leftover from meetings and not gain weight.
So my commute home was filled w/ blocked off streets and wildly swerving traffic. Just a normal day. Saw a bum taking a leak at a corner and two cabbies almost rear-end each other. |
Today's commute was a blast on the new road bike.... rode 12.5 miles to work. After work, I went on a road ride with a coworker for about 37 miles, then immediately rode the last 13 miles back home. Lots of riding, slightly chilly. I need new fall/winter duds.
|
Chilly ride in this morning but it was crystal clear and I got to see the sun rise on the way to school. Sweet! I guess having an early morning lab isn't such a bad thing. I probably annoy the hell out of my classmates because they're still trying to wake up while I am turbocharged and ready to go. Too bad for them:)

Holy tailwind!!!
My first perfect tailwind of the season with winds at 15-20 mph!!! 17.25 miles in 54:25 at 19mph. Oh yeah, it was on my mountain bike!!! |
I've been slacking on the commute. Late nights and early mornings make me tired and desire sleep more than riding. I forced myself to ride and I'm glad I did. There was construction at the first intersection so I detoured and back tracked which threw a couple of quick steep hills in the route. Coming home I dodge a couple right hooks. I guess the guy in the Kia had an emergency at home, I can't fathom any other reason why anyone would take a corner so sharp and fast and reckless (too bad it was wreckless!)

You had your first test and you passed with flying colors. Welcome to the club and may you slay all the cycling demons that plagued you today. My commute was gorgeous today. Perfect weather. I'm a bit run down due to a head cold that's slowly finding it's way out of my body and very long days the last two weeks. But the bike ride is the best part of the day. Just a little slower than usual but oh, so pleasant. Had to book from one location to a second in order to be on schedule and that gave me a good workout. Toodled home in the dark. |
how wet did i get on this morning's ride? so wet that i baggied my feet before i put them back in those shoes 9 hours later :D it was that really wild, crazy, halloween's a-comin', lost-at-sea kind of weather, with raindrops like bullets and a wind with muscles and the air so full of water in general it's like you're just in your own little travelling time-pod, you and your bike. it was a rush.
and then the ride home was calm and cool and tranquil. and those baggies worked great. songs: abide with me; and the band played waltzing matilda, eric bogle; tonight i fancy myself, the beautiful south. |
43* this morning. Decided to take the morning off and load the bike on the bus' rack. Well, I missed the bus (I'm sure it was early, four folks at another stop said the same). It winds through another neighborhood before coming out onto a main road, and I decided I could catch it by taking the main road. 2.5 miles later, it worked!! Good thing, because I was wearing my work clothes and dark jacket, no earband and no gloves. I didn't really want to ride the whole way in.
Looking forward to upper 60's and a perfect ride home... |
I was having a great ride this morning. It was cooler than normal which encouraged me to ride hard and fast all the way to work. Unfortunately when I got to the last light before my office everything changed. As I pulled up to the light I took the lane and waited for it to change. A few seconds later a Toyota Tacoma pick up pulled behind me and in my opinion a little close to my rear wheel. When the light turned green I hammered my way across the intersection, taking the lane the whole way because once I cross the street I have to take an immediate left. Then I hear the pick-up's engine gunning, it sounds like he's flooring it. He swerves around me and left hooks me before my turn. Then he shouts out the window that I should get an f***** car and takes off down the street. I don't know why this set me off, maybe it's because I still had plenty of adrenaline from the ride but I was literally ready to fight the guy.
What get's me is I don't understand what was bothering this guy. I was at the light before he arrived. I hammered my way across the intersection and the speed limit on these roads is only 25 at most waiting behind me would have delayed the guy by 5 or 10 seconds. |

Cage commute today. :( Gotta leave early and get to the airport fast after work. It's a nice cool morning. Good for riding. |
bikebuddha - love the sig.
Rode the Rock Lobster this morning with it's new Tufo tires and new Neuvation superlight wheels and new miche 12-27 cassette - Mount morning was still a drag. :( I guess I need to go to 28 - Nice thing about miche is that I can change just that one cog. :) The Tufo's rock! Very smooth ride at 160 psi. Who'da thunk it? They are so called tubular clinchers. Basically tubular tires that mount on clincher rims for the unaware. One point on a downhill headed towards an intersection with a busy road and cars approaching - with my right hand dangling by my side - I applied the front brake with plenty of time to stop leisurely and NOTHING HAPPENED. I squeezed harder and reached up to grab the rear brake when it caught. Whew! I was about to try out my baseball slide. Seems someone didn't check the front brake pad adjustment after putting on the new wheels. DOH!! One pad was hitting the braking surface and the other was barely catching a couple of mm of the braking surface. Surprised I got 8 miles in before I had problems. Also rode with a fellow commuter for about a couple of blocks. We decided it was chilly today. 49 on the office thermometer when I arrived but the weather channel said 55. |
Sub 40 today...somewhat overcast. This was the first day I had to wear long pants riding in (thankfully I bought some velcro straps a while back). I really need to get a cap that fits under my helmet and one of those ear cover thingies...everything was fine except for that:)
|
40f, pouring rain, and a 40mph headwind... I couldn't talk my bike into going out in that. So it sits all snug and warm in the dining room today. Freakin wussy bike.
|
Chilly for the first 5 minutes or so. Then I got warmed up and really enjoyed the leisurely ride in. Took 38 minutes this morning. Got some funny looks from people who I guess could not believe someone would dare be outside on a fall morning :D Funny how most of those people looked really out of shape (if you know what I mean).
Got to work and again the showers are closed for cleaning. WTF? Don't they know that a majority of office workers arrive at work between 8:00 am and 9:00 am ? So...I used the 30 minutes to do some weight lifting. I was surprised I could still bench 140 after the ride in with out having had breakfast. |
