Hi everybody,
I have a problem with my winter gloves, Pearl Izumi Pro Softshell Lobster Bike Gloves. I used them all last winter & they were plenty warm even in the worst of Massachusetts weather. The bad news is that this year I seem to need a lot more wrist support & better padding on the palms of my hands. I have been looking around at my local bike stores but have not found a heavily insulated split finger glove that is well padded & supportive. The models that I have found all seem to be heavy on insulation & light on padding & support. I should add that I own a pair of Gore 5 fingered Cross Tex Gloves that are supportive but do not keep my warm below 40 degrees. Can anyone recommend a better model or an improvised solution? Maybe I should just squeeze a pair of supportive & padded summer bike gloves into a pair of ski mittens or something along those lines?

Try motorcycle winter gloves.
Usually they'll have more padding by the palms
and the cuffs are cut a bit longer, giving you
more support. They won't be lobster style
though

I don't know if you have tried doubling up your gloves by putting the bulky layer over the supportive gloves. The only other thing you could try is bar end mitts https://barmitts.com/ they will allow you to ride the gloves you want to wear and stay warm.

I use virtually the same gloves, semi lobster Pi - they insanely warm, really almost too warm. Anyway...

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by or how you define what wrist support is? I have a lot of different types of bike gloves but I can't see how any of them really involve my wrist at all. Padding I get, but you can overcome that with changing the control surface of your bars, e.g. softer grips/layer under the tape. Something like the ergon grips or flat top road drop bars might help with hand positions that are better on your wrists.

They make pads to put under bar tape. I have large hands so for my flat bar bikes I use a double wrap of bar tape.

I like your idea about motorcycle gloves. I will try to find a shop that stocks them. Can you recommend any brands or models to look for?

In reading my question again, I see your point about gloves not providing wrist support. That having been said, my wrists have gotten touchy since switching to the lobster claw gloves, though there could be other causes. I will look into Ergon grips & different road bars. Thanks for the feedback!
