Want to make a bicycle hoist to store bikes in garage, but...

...the ceiling is not horizontal.

I've seen allot of instructables showing DIY hoist things with hooks for bikes but only for horizontal ceilings. I have beams like the inside of a roof, to work with. Would the same work on this kind of ceiling?

I have different bikes as well, so it should work for different bikes, ranging in weight.
- Specialized Allez, triathlon conversion
- Motobecane super mirage, converted to fixed
- Renault endurance, road bike.
- Trek mountain bike.
- Felt bandit chopper.
- Girlfriends fixie.

Any ideas?

Maybe first you could hang a length of 2x4 from one of the sloping beams. Fixed lengths of rope - one end of the 2x4 shorter rope, the other end longer - so the 2x4 hangs horizontally. Then attach the "instructables" hoist to that. Perhaps it would sway around too much. Just a thought.

Unless the roof has a serious pitch (like it's a A frame or something) you're probably ok.
The bike doesn't absolutely have to hang horizontally, does it?

Or do the instructables actually not function if the roof isn't horizonal?

I have some hangers in my garage that I bought off ebay. The kits were dirt cheap (around $15 each). It's comprised of 2 brakcets that go onto the ceiling, each one with a hook (one for the seat & one for the handlebars, with one long rope holding it all togheter. I wouldn't see any reason why this wouldn't work on a ceiling with beams coming down, as long as the beams weren't between the two brackets.

if you rotate 90 degrees you will have a parallell surface to work with. no?

I thought about installing a bike hoist or two, but the ceilings in my garage are like 14' high and would be a hassle. Instead I installed some wall-mount bike hangers that work really well and are very space efficient.

Just buy one of the many ceiling mount bike hoists that are available. Four pulley's and a rope. They don't care that your ceiling is sloped.

If you live in seattle, you can have my pulley hoist since I no longer need it.
