VLCC (Very Long Commute Club) week 2
This week I like to talk about hot days and how we cope with the heat. I know it's not that hot here but the south is all ready getting up in the 90 deg range.
For me I always use sun screen and also wear sun glasses. But to help with the heat I like to freeze some water in the camel back and then fill the rest with water. That way when I wear the bag on my back it helps keep me cool. It cools the back but more so the blood that flows down the spine. It turn cools down more than just the back area.
So lets hear how you deal with the heat.

On my longer rides (non-commuting) I wear a very thin silk-like undershirt that is sleeveless (cant remember the brand). It picks up a bit of sweat and acts as a cooler. I use the same thing in winter to keep me warm. They are awesome.
Second, I slow the pace a tad. Just enough to keep aitvfolw, but not so hard as to overheat from the inside out.
Last, always light colored clothing. No black bike shorts. Usually REI nylon shorts that are very light weight too.

I have not commuted during the summer yet but I like your idea abotu the camel back. I might do that. These last few weeks have been in the 80s and I notice the heat on the way home. Harder to breath for me. I will need ot figure this one out soon!

man was having a good fast ride to work to day when the sky opened up and rain hard on me. Was so heavy that I had to stop under a bridge and wait it out. The cars had to slow down from 65 mph to like 30 mph to be able to see. The ride home was nice 64 deg out and a 10mph tail wind.

I guess I must be an oddball in that the warmer it is, the better my body functions. Friday got up to 93 and it was my fastest commute this year. My coping with heat just involves bringing more water and forcing the drinking. 24oz per every ten miles had been the highest consumption rate up until last summer when we had some days with a heat index up to 119F (mid-90s air temp and dew point in lower 80s). The 33 miles home (shortest route is 24, but not the preferred option) saw four water bottles emptied (96 oz total), and two stops to wring out jersey, gloves, and socks. I was impressed with the puddle that created. :-) My shoes were soaked five miles from home, dripping onto the pavement with each down stroke.

we ran out of prats tonight so we got to leave at 12:00 tonight. Had a nice fast ride home no wind and only 60 Deg. Love rides like this. passed a cop that was parked on the side of the road, and a few minutes later he passed me. While he went passed he told me to slow down LOL. I was only doing 28.7 mph. and the speed limit on that road is 55mph. Not the frist time I've been told that. Any ways love the ride home tonight.
