Commuting Jacket
I know we're just entering the warm months, but since a lot of things are on sale or clearance, I was thinking about getting myself a new cycling jacket for the fall. I need something that's functional for road riding but understated enough to be worn off the bike without looking like I just jumped out of a paceline. Preferably made in the US. Any recommendations?

Showers Pass makes a good waterproof jacket at a reasonable price. The blue one is more sidewalk-friendly than the yellow one, I guess the black one is almost unobtrusive but I'd never ride with a black jacket.

Not really made in the US but also somewhat tough to get in the US, but I buy most of my stuff from Haglöfs, a Swedish outdoor gear company because you get just about everything from 100% recycled material ... and what isn't recycled is often grown organically.

I have a Marmot DriClime Catalyst that I love. Not sure if it's us Made (would doubt it) but it works great with proper layering down to 28 degrees & it starts to get uncomfortable around 55 or so. It's pretty lightweight & if you go with one of the neutral colors, it doesn't look too bad.

Me,? drop the understated ... for the dark season, I went Bright Neon lime
ANSI ... with multiple wide reflective stripes..
now on the verge of getting back
Some of the retirement money, ive put out since 1965, I don't want someone
killing me and saying "i did not see you" ..
A roadside & emergency services look , rather than TDF..
Carhartt, makes one of Cordura weight fabric, LaCrosse, lighter..
we have a working men's shop here, for Builders, not Brokers.

I agree. Go for the brightest, most obnoxious, reflective striped, ANSI neon yellow jacket you can find. I want motorists to see me and I want every advantage I can get. Here is one place to try, but I doubt their stuff is made in the US: www.alertshirt.com
I like to dress in layers with the bright windbreaker on top. Then as I ride and heat up I remove the underneath layers.

You want classy, go for a NAU riding jacket. It's a blazer, but it has a bit of stretch, good water-proofing, and longer arms to keep your wrists covered even when bent over on the bike. It's expensive as hell, but I work at a school, so it's nice to wear it off and on the bike and still look professional. Pricey, but since I wear it almost every chilly day (and use it a lot for travel) I think it's a justifiable purchase.

I think a more casual option would be bontranger's commuter jacket. Looks good and has a good price.

I tried to find a retailer here in the states for Haglof when I was shopping for a winter jacket last year acidfast7. I couldn't find one. I ended up having a friend of mine ship it from his place in Stockholm. If anyone knows of a retailer here in the US. I'd love to know of one. They make quality skiing gear.

I absolutely love my J&G rain jacket. I use it year round as my commuting jacket.
It is well designed and well made. It is also reasonably priced. It also made in the USA.

To be honest, I'd check around NYC, as all of the major European (Swedish) brands put their flagship stores there including Fjällräven, Nudie Jeans Co., Cheap Mondays and a few others.

I have a Canari day-glo orange jacket that's fine for our mild winters. I guess it's more of a shell, and I'll layer underneath. I think it was about $45 at REI or the like.

The showers pass Portland is great if you don't want to look like a rain jacket:
