With a long cable lock, like the one used to secure the bike on the right, you have even more flexibility - that bike could have been parked with either wheel inserted between the vertical posts, and the cable routed through the frame and around the rack. Or the bike could have been placed outside the rack, on the right side, and secured to it. There's no need for anyone to park it that way, unless they're just lazy, inconsiderate, or aren't smart enough to figure out alternatives.

I was thinking about doing something similar from the ceiling joists in my garage. Just hanging the bikes from 1 wheel...

So, until last week, this would have been my bike parked at work:
Private office, no client contact in the office, in a corner away from everyone.
A slightly better, if slightly out of focus, image of my main steed here:
As of last week, though, my poor baby has to suffer the indignity of being here:

which also includes the annoyance of having to share!
Trust me when I say that I know the new situation is still pretty good; a secure, underground/covered parking facility is nothing to be sneezed at. But it isn't as convenient, confidence inspiring or happy-making as having my bike next to me all day.

I know, a photo of an empty bike rack is kind of pointless. I couldn't ride today - had to bring a couple cases of water into the office, but I'm riding tomorrow with one of my co-workers that hasn't ridden in many months.

Rode in today for the first time this week, and I have room in my office/radio shop to park the bike, so here it is for all of you to see. It is a late model Bacchetta Giro 26, all kitted out to commute/tour and a most excellent way to get to and from work.

I am a product design student studying bike security and in particular finding ways to encourage more people to commute to school and work by trying to solve the issues surrounding bike security.
I am in the process of designing a new bike locker service for commuters with the view to getting this product manufactured. If you have a spare 30 secs and would like to contribute to the design of this service and fill in a really quick 30 second questionnaire it would be very much appreciated and taken on board.

Many thanks

Bikes: Several bikes, Road, Mountain, Commute, etc.
Here is a photo of my commute bike by my desk.
Background is a collection of event numbers, all of which are from events that I've ridden on bikes other than my DaHon.
I am the only one who works here that rides to work (RT is 18 mi. on the bike, 22 mi. on the Los Angeles Metro Green Line).

I found this in my old BF attachments. That computer's hard drive is a whopping 6Gb!
Those console racks are gone and were replaced by a stationnary bike that nobody uses. My bike rests on it.
