Some of you may remember I talked about a really bad dog problem that I'm having. There is a house that I pass when I'm on my way to work that has 7 very aggressive dogs. They come after me all the time. Yesterday on my way to work they all came after me and I almost got creamed by a car trying to get away from them. This is in a rural area, not in the city. So keep that in mind. I made contact with the police chief about the situation (this is not in the police dept's jurisdiction) because the chief knows the owner really well. I asked the chief to make contact with him and see about resolving the situation. She did and the guy said there not his dogs. But all the dogs have collars on them and there at his house everyday. I was trying to do the rite thing and take care of it without problems. Well yesterday afternoon broke the ice. I've had enough. I have a concealed weapons permit and it has gotten to that point. I made contact with a friend of mine who works at the sheriffs office and he was telling me that in our parish, animals are not to roam free. And if the dogs come out to the road and attack me that I have the rite to protect myself by opening fire. And that my friends is what's gonna happen. I tried to do this the rite way but I don't know what else to do. Legally the guy can't come after me for doing this because he didnt restrain his animals and I was trying to protect myself. Would y'all take it this far?

It doesn't sound to me like you read the thread. You just saw "gun" and immediately thought "hothead idiot"

He reached out to a chief of police, not in the jurisdiction, who was a friend of the dog owner, to try and rectify. When that didn't work, he figured a gun is the solution.

So you DIDN'T read it. Here's the first post in the thread -- after trying to escape (and almost getting HIT), OP contacts the chief of police. Where's the jump to a gun? He's had previous experience with animal control, got the free & clear from law enforcement to do what he had to do, and the apparent owner isn't doing shat about the whole deal. He's done more than I would have, and you want to second-guess him? Who the hell are you to do that? This man is a fireman, a public servant -- what do YOU do for society?
Read this part:

He really needed to talk to the chief of police IN THAT LOCATION'S JURISDICTION, instead of saying,"Well, gotta use mah gun!" Or, if police don't handle violent animals (And, most will, AFAIK), contact animal control.

Not sure if this has already been posted in here but it may be worth the redundancy:

The house is in the county and under the Sheriff's office jurisdiction and not within the purview of the animal control from the nearest municipality. What he did in asking a friend in high places to intervene was a good bet, it just didn't pan out.
It is instructive to read through a post sometimes...

You've got a few problems to overcome, but before I explain, let me put out a little back story.
I live in a colonia, on the border of Mexico/Texas. This is no-man's land, figuratively. The city of Brownsville police and animal control do not come out to this area, the county does, but is already strained for staff/logistics. So when we have a dog problem out here, you're on your own. Last year I was hounded by a small pack of dogs, which were more dangerous because of what they were, chihuahuas. I know that sounds funny, but because of their size, they were more of a danger of getting caught up in my bike than biting me.
After 2 months of just hammering beyond them, the worst possible outcome happened. I was riding my Karate Monkey, with platform pedals at about 18 mph coming around the bend where they lived. The lady owned 4 of them and they were unrestrained; one of them got into my wheel as I stood up to sprint away from them and the dog lived, but I took ended up going down very hard, getting a concussion and road rash as I slide some 15-20 feet down the road. By the time I snapped to my feet and went into rage mode, the dogs were already behind her "fence" again and her and the home healthcare worker that was in her front yard just stared at me. I made it very clear that we had a problem, and her response was
"No English." I asked the other lady and her response was simply "I don't want to get involved." I lost 2 days work and really wasn't comfortable until they moved a few months later.
The deputy told me there was nothing in their power to do for me, other than take someone to court for the damages; taking someone who has nothing to lose to court isn't beneficial and no amount of "feel good cause I won a court battle" mentality is going to fix that problem.
I carry mace for dogs, exclusively, and haven't had to use it; I pray I don't because at the end of the day, you and I both know that you're not worried about wind, how it will make the dog feel or any other "feel good" mindsets that want to dictate what the appropriate response is during a situation.
You're scared, a dog is chasing you (dogs), and you're both looking at your life (in the case of dangerous dogs) and possibly getting injured because of the road hazard - no amount of animal rights is going to change this fact.
I wouldn't shot the dog because I just don't do the gun thing, but I wouldn't begrudge you if you felt that was the only option you had in your case.

This sounds like a good option...and makes you look better for attempting a less than deadly option first. I'm a strong 2a proponent, but using a firearm should always be a last resort to protect yourself from death/serious bodily injury. I believe you are totally in the right to protect yourself, but law enforcement and the lawyers would have fun with this and make your life hell after the fact, as you don't HAVE to ride your bike past those dogs, you knew they were there and that you knew there would be a confrontation.....therefore it was an avoidable situation and shooting was not your last resort. The case could be made that you actually rode into the situation intending to shoot the dogs. Should this story make the media and they put their own spin on the story, are you ready for the barrage of hate from the animal lovers? The bottom line is to always consider all possible outcomes before using a firearm.
Not to derail the rest of your comments, but in some areas there is no other way between A and B... especially out west or in rural areas... the OP may not have a choice but to go this route or hack a way through woods or swim a lake or something.
In fact, google map Bunkie Louisiana and just see how many "alternate routes" exist on the edge of town.

You know I've had several occasions where I could have shot those viscous animals but I haven't. I'm trying to do the rite thing here. Some of you are jumping the gun on me about the gun idea and I haven't even done anything.
Now this morning I rode to work without incident. They weren't even out. But they are sill around and I'm still having a problem but I'm just sucking it up and dealing with it. But don't forget, my patience is running real thin.

Bunkie,
I think the problem is two things, but first, before someone pretends they're the English professor for this thread again - it's spelled right, which is different than write, but still not the same as right, because if you did this right, they'd be all like "alright!" I digress; some people get worked up over things written on the Internet because they've never had to deal with actually teaching, but instead just know how to act butthurt when words aren't pretty enough for them.
Keep up the patience and know that it doesn't matter what people say on a forum on the Internet; do what makes you feel safe ultimately.

I have been reading this thread since the beginning
And I for one think you have went a lot farther than is necessary
You should not have to worry about being attacked by any animal or person
just because you ride a bike on a road
I think if your bothered again you should end the problem permanently
before yourself or some one else gets hurt or maimed
that or maybe you could have one of these dog whisper animal lover/gun haters take care of it for you
they can wag there finger at them and say no no doggy go home

Brain storm... How about a paintball pistol, whack them dogs a couple of rounds and I would bet they stop harassing you...
In fact, soon, every time the see a bicycler they would run the other direction after a few episodes of paintball smacks in the face... JMO I personally use bear-spray...

And what makes that even worse for ME is that I've spent nearly a year, off and on, trying to figure out the best way to hook my bike up with a paintball gun for "other" reasons (lol). 350htrr, ya GOT it!
(Just another example of 'I really haven't had a very good DAY...')

If you do go the way of a paint pistol, there are rounds available with pepper spray inside. They seem to work well for stopping the police having to wrestle with knife wielding maniacs/crackheads/hippies etc. Outside of the fact that hitting a pooch with a paintball gun may pose a challenge, the teargas effect from the pepper rounds can affect the doggies regardless of whether you hit them or not.

Lol, thanks for the suggestions guys. Yea the paintball idea isn't to shabby if I say so. It's just to go buy that and carry it on the bike, that's the only problem.
Ive been hoping that kid that waits for the school bus, his dad, was supposedly suppose to taken care of the problem but hasn't. That would have been perfect for me but I guess the guys wife was talking a load of crap. Are her husband is a sissy.

Sometimes I wish everyone could have a couple action camera mounted to their bikes, I know that I've been watching for a deal for a GoPro to mount on my bicycle. With youtube and vimeo and sensationalistic news reporting I can envision many ways to bring public pressure onto situations like this.
And I also still have a mental image in my head of a ladder truck with a water cannon extended over the roadway one morning just waiting for you to ride past and then water blasting the pack of dogs when the dogs give chase of the cyclist. Call it a training exercise for the fire crew, but then the dogs would probably see the truck and just sit in the yard wagging their pseudo-innocent tails.
Sometimes there are no simple solutions.
