Rack for a 29er

Hi Everyone,

Other than my introduction post, this is my first real post here. I have a question about a rack for my bike. I have a 2014 Giant Talon 29er 2 and I've been mainly riding it on the weekends for exercise and fun. Now, I'd like to start using it for commuting to and from work. Since I take the train to work, this should work out perfectly.

The one thing I'm trying to figure out is what rack to get for my bike so I can attach a pannier to it. I always have my laptop with my and I'd rather not use a backpack since I really can't have a sweaty back when I get to the office. Can someone point me to a rack that'll fit my particular bike? I've looked at Topeak and Axiom racks, but I'm just afraid that if I buy one, that it won't fit and it'll take that much longer to have to return it and find another one to buy.

The bike is a 29er with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks,
Larry

Two things:

1) The bike doesn't appear to have mounting points for a rack's upper struts to attach to so you'll either have to use P clamps, a new seat post clamp with the mounting eyelets on it or something similar,

or

Just get a seat post mounted rack. These usually don't carry as heavy a load as standard racks but these are often mounted with a quick release so you can remove them easily and wont interfere with disc brakes.

2) You should consider how much bouncing around your laptop will do in panniers. The bumpy roads and vibrations can be rough on electronics.

Thanks for the reply Nick. I thought about using a seat post mounted rack, but as you stated, they don't carry as heavy a load as standard racks. It's funny, it took me a while to find the "right" bike and I based my options on ride quality, comfort and yes, a little on appearance, when I should have included things like this in my opinion as well.

Anyway, I do like the idea of using P clamps or even a new seat post clamp. Either option is readily available.

Again, thanks for you reply!

Thanks,
Larry

I know we have put a rack on a talon 27.5 without having to resort to p clamps. I would have figured the 29er has the same options but I've never noticed. I can't see the mounts in the picture, but I can't see them on a picture of the 27.5 either. If yours does have the mounts you basically just need to ask for a disk specific rack to clear the brakes.

Check your frame for threaded holes near the top of your seat stays, pointing horizontally to the side.

Thanks! I will do so when I get home from work tonight!

A Seat post mounted Beam rack with side loops . will fit. other than that ..

Drop by the bike shop and see what Fits .. After work ..

Brakes on top of the chain stay are easier to clear , than brakes on the back of the seat -stay .

clearance is gained by spreading the legs, or mounting to the rear further ,,

Old Man Mountain And others use the wheel QR skewer if no dropout eyelet is there.

Ok, I went to the bike shop and it turns out that Giant does sell a rack that'll fit a 29er with disc breaks and it will attach to the frame just fine. The thing is, there is no way to attach it to seat post because there are no holes there. So, I was told that I needed to find a seat post rack adapter (size 53). Hopefully that'll be easy to find.

Thanks,
Larry

For laptop, if it fits, you could use a frame cargo holder. They fit in the main triangle between your knees. Just an idea!
