My bike is not built for speed, but people seem surprised when i beat them across the intersection. Some intersections are crap for doing anything but a crawl across, usually on a hill going up. but, it's never a contest for me. Sure, if i see someone acting a fool i wanna grow some distance so their foolishness does not end up involving me, but its never a contest.
Look fast? not really... but how fast am i supposed to look on a 36 lb bike and me at 230 with a hub drive that uses friction molecule fluid and drive ratios that favor climbing and hauling vs speed speed and more speed?

I'm about medium speed and look about medium speed. Oddly enough that means everyone shoals me. I don't mind if it's a roadie who's going to tear-ass as soon as the light turns green or the surprisingly quick commuter riding in sandals keeping a good pace. But, those Citibikers need to stay out of the way.

There was only one time I was passed at a red light. He was in spandex and riding a fancy carbon bike. I was in pants and a t-shirt and riding my loaded-up commuter bike. We were about to head up a hill.
He won.
He won.

This happens to me all the time. Sometimes I'm cruising at 21-22 mph and another cyclist will sprint to pass me then gas right after and slow down so I'm playing leap frog with him. Triathletes training on the weekends tend to shoal at red lights when they see me as well and are surprised when they look back I'm on their tail coasting.
It doesn't bother me anymore though, it comes with the territory. It doesn't help that I look like a hipster kid. I guess it's good that I'm closing in on 30 but people think I'm 17.

Move to Austin. There are so few cyclists, it's refreshing to see someone else. Shoal me all you want - more power to you. If I'm faster I just pass them, no reason to ride up on their rear.
