Not so much the oil you're worried about it's the car in general. Even though I try to do most of my trips by bike I at least drive the car every week and half. If for some reason I need the car right away I want to know it's going to drive. The rubber throughout the car will break down faster than any of the fluids.

Liking these warmers temps. Supposed to be cooler today.. I'll believe it when I feel it! Wore sandals today just for grins. Must say the wind over the feet is a awesome feeling.

My wife decided to pick me up yesterday afternoon. She was already out and there was a threat of a thunderstorm. It turned out to be minor and I could have ridden. Missed some miles and it won't be a 10/10 this week. Oh well.

Plenty warm and humid this morning, but a good ride. When I have a few extra minutes I'll take a longer way through one neighborhood near the end of my ride. One street is about a mile long, nicely lined with trees and a gentle downhill. It's mostly straight with a couple of roundabouts. I like to sit up, ride no handed, coast and cool down. This is what I did this morning. Yay me!

arsprod 06-23-15 06:53 AM

Warmest morning of the year, 78F. Very gusty winds but mostly crosswind. Ride home yesterday was weird - I bonked. Either that or I was having a stroke?! It wasn't particularly hot (upper 80's) but very humid and Mondays are late days for me so after dinner time. I got really dizzy and wondered if I was going to fall over. Not a good feeling. I felt fine after a shower and food - only to discover our a/c crapped out... and won't be fixed until tomorrow. I do love summer!

Another 100-degree forecasted here. More troublesome is the humidity inching up with the dewpoint in the 70s again. Yesterday I got stuck in a meeting much of the afternoon with no water, and then had to walk a couple of miles in the heat before heading home. I was extremely thirsty when I got home and pumped myself with fluids all night. For dinner I had cole slaw, a bunch of water melon and banana pudding.

I hadn't planned to ride today, but after the weather forecast stated this would be the nicest day of the week, I reconsidered. It's supposed to be in the mid-80's with much lower humidity for today and today only. It was indeed a very nice ride to work!

Same here in DC. I laughed when I read your comment, I was in a three-hour briefing yesterday afternoon...no break no water. Cabbed back to the office and chnaged and rode home but I was dead tired byu the tine I arrived.

mgw4jc 06-24-15 06:21 AM

About 95 for the ride home and about 76 for the ride in this morning. Just a hot June so far. The weekend looks like it may have a little relief, highs in the mid 80s instead of upper 90s and some decent chances for rain.

A house in a neighborhood I ride through has had a basketball goal sitting at the curb. It looks to be intact. If it is still there when I ride by tonight, I will get back out with the car and pick it up perhaps.

tarwheel 06-24-15 06:36 AM

We've set a record in Raleigh for the most consecutive days at 95 F or higher at 11, beating the old record of 9, and could easily extend the streak to 14 days give the current forecast. The crazy part is that it's just June, and July-August are usually our hottest months. I've ridden on 8 of those days, 6 of them commuting. Although I hate hot, humid weather, I have acclimated to the heat by continuing to ride almost every day. Yesterday the official high temperature was 98, and the heat index reached 107. I didn't head home from work until nearly 7 pm, so I avoided riding during the worst of it, but I walked about 3 miles during the hottest part of the day.

arsprod 06-24-15 07:27 AM

Wow, 78F yesterday morning and 63F today. A most welcomed cold front since my house a/c quit Monday!

spivonious 06-24-15 07:39 AM

I think I gained 5 pounds of water weight on the ride home last night. In hindsight, I should have just waited it out at the office. Some of the lightning was getting close!

jbarham 06-24-15 07:46 AM

Beautiful morning. I ditched my panniers for the ride in and really stepped on the pedals. Made it in 8:42.

Yeah, same here. I hit a storm last week that scared the hell out of me. So, ever since, ongoing T-storms kept me off the bike for the past 5 days. Finally had a clear break with no threats anywhere in sight this morning. This made for a nice ride.

PatrickGSR94 06-24-15 08:43 AM

Slightly cooler this morning than was Monday morning, which was nice. Didn't sweat quite as much. Made it to work about 1.5 minutes faster also. Nothing else to report I guess.

I'm definitely noticing that I sweat FAR more in the mornings when it's 70's and 80%+ humid, vs. in the afternoon in the 90's with 50% humidity.

Monday coming home the heat index was 105°F

groovestew 06-24-15 09:35 AM

I don't envy the heat some of you guys are experiencing! In these parts, it's conceivable to go all year without hitting 30C/86F, which is just fine with me, though we have a forecast of low-30's within the next few days. Summers here are great; winters...not so much.

Nice commute, perfect weather this morning. Trailed another commuter on a road bike for a bit and passed him after he got caught at a light. I could hear him drafting me for a while down a trail, then when we hit a hill, he passed me back, and I could tell he was up for a race. I gave chase, but he was too fast up the hill for me. He was gracious enough to wait at the top and give me kudos for the effort, then we parted ways.

HardyWeinberg 06-24-15 10:09 AM

Traffic jam! Came up to an intersection, 5 bikes trying to go forward through the green light, minivan trying to push through them to turn right, nobody going anywhere, so I went around the minivan on its left and way ahead of the lead biker.

Today's ride was filling. Yes, filling.

It's Denver Bike To Work Day, and my favorite LBS, which not coincidentally is near my office, had tents set up and were serving pancakes and sausage. Yum!

And I bought something while I was there, too. That seemed appropriate to do.

It was fun to sit there and talk with other cyclists for a little while, see what everyone else rides, etc. It was a fun diversion from the usual commute.

caloso 06-24-15 02:55 PM

I've encountered more salmon in the last week than I have all year. I said some bad words at one yesterday.

HardyWeinberg 06-24-15 03:50 PM

My daughter was bummed when we passed a road kill kitty on our commute to her summer camp this morning.

She did say it made the skeletons look better at the museum I dragged her through last week .

PatrickGSR94 06-24-15 06:32 PM

hot hot and more hot. Yuck. It was 97/106 heat index shortly before I left the office.

Torker 06-24-15 07:09 PM

Such a beautiful afternoon I decided to extend my commute home. A skunk ran out of trees into my front wheel and sprayed my legs in the process. I've spent the whole evening trying to get the smell off my legs, bike and shoes.

essiemyra 06-25-15 05:23 AM

After two days of not riding due to my bike being in the shop, today's ride was very nice. The temp was 59f degrees with no humidity and partly cloudy skies.

My bike issues are not over yet though. My son bought me a new odometer for Mother's day. When the bike shop tried to install it, they told me it was not working. So I have to return it and have a new one sent to me. And my old odometer was not working consistently due to a loose wire. No use putting that one back on. So I am without an odometer which is not the end of the world. I do not tracking miles just were I am along my route and also I like to have the time.

My understanding is you sweat about the same for both, but when it is humid, it cannot evaporate from your skin as much, so you stay wetter. When the humidity is down, the sweat evaporates. I also think the sweat evaporates more easily when you're moving. I sweat more (i.e., get wetter) after I stop.

That stinks.

Ride home yesterday was hot. These hot afternoon rides start off really bad and difficult to get a good deep breath. But then once I get away from the traffic and rolling at a decent speed it gets better.

Less humid for the ride in this morning: 76F and 72%. I woke up feeling a bit queasy at the stomach. A few bathroom visits and some rest helped. I took it slow coming in and felt okay, but still being careful with what and how much I eat.

baron von trail 06-25-15 06:58 AM

Drat--rode right into a downpour. Ended up totally soaked. I should have taken the bike with fenders this morning.

tarwheel 06-25-15 07:04 AM

A big thunderstorm blew up just about the time I leave for work every morning. It wasn't storming at my house, but I would have been riding right into it. So, I drove today, which was probably a good thing because my legs also needed a break.
