Another strong headwind for the ride in this morning. Still... the breeze helped keep me little cooler with the high humidity.

Somewhere in this mess is me. Anyone have a bell that works in the rain?!

This week I'm really missing commuting by bike. My kids are in camp a mile or so from work, so I have to drive. At least I get to ride a Divvy bike from camp to work. It's a big change from the 200+ miles last week.

My understanding is you sweat about the same for both, but when it is humid, it cannot evaporate from your skin as much, so you stay wetter. When the humidity is down, the sweat evaporates. I also think the sweat evaporates more easily when you're moving. I sweat more (i.e., get wetter) after I stop.
Yesterday's commute home was mostly cloudy and there were scattered pop-up showers all around me. I praying, hoping for some cool rain on me. I was actually riding and yelling at the clouds, taunting them. "Come on rain, what'chu got?? Is that all you got??" But 15.5 miles and not a single drop on me. Darn. I seemed to have threaded the needle right between the showers between work and home. |
First multi-modal commute. Drove 30 miles, parked at a MUP trail head and rode the last 15 miles into work. Humidity lowered a bit, a little breezy but not unbearable.
Good news is I have a job interview 2/3 on Sunday morning (what kind of HR rep schedules interviews on Sundays? Geez), if all goes well I could be back to commuting daily as it's only 10 miles [one way] from home. |

This morning on my way to work I saw a city pickup with a horizontal bar suspended in front of it. Hanging from the bar were 5 or 6 weights or something. They hung down within 2-3 in of the ground. It was approaching a "trigger" light from the opposite side as I was.
He was going so slow it seemed like he was waiting for me to trigger the light from my side. Which I did. The trigger starts the timer for the crosswalk on the main street. It always starts at 7, when it reaches 0, the main streets light turns yellow then red. And my light turns green. What was weird is when the countdown reached 2 the main street turned red and mine turned green. I didn't hang around but wondered if the weird pickup had something to do with the light's behavior. |
It was a good commute this morning. I started out last night prepared to ride but not completely confident I would due to the rain predicted for this morning. When I woke up this morning the weather forecaster had the showers just a few miles from my area. So I decided not to ride, but continued to get ready for work. I sat down on the chair for just a few minutes and jumped out and said I have to ride. If it starts downpouring if i am not half way there I will turn back. I never downpoured just barely spit my whole way to work. A very good ride in!!

No ride today.. quite the storms in the KC area last night. Alot of down limbs. Did a double donation of blood yesterday and still rode home in the 100+ heat index so I think I deserve a break today.

Fast commute this morning due to fresh legs from taking the day off riding yesterday because of morning thunderstorms. The air felt more humid today than it has all summer, and that's saying something. I was totally drenched with sweat when I got to work, and I doubt that my clothes will dry by the time I leave work because I'm planning to take the afternoon off. Part of my rationale for leaving early today is that I have a strong premonition that we will get hit by thunderstorms this afternoon. When it gets this hot and humid around here, thunderstorms are almost a given.

I spent monday and tuesday off from work. I was camping in extreme heat with my daughter. (our yearly camping trip just the two of us) real feel reached 108.2 . We eventually drove somewhere in the van with air conditioning blasting then ate frozen yogurt. We also spent a lot of time in the lake. It was a good trip but it was SO VERY HOT> I laid in my hammock at night sweating but I eventually got to sleep.
Was supposed to go mountain biking with a friend and two coworkers yesterday evening, so I did not ride. One was sick and the other two bailed, so I went mountain biking by myself! It has been 47 days since I have ridden the mountain bike. (It felt so weird) I realized I have to remember to look farther down the trail I was riding faster and farther than I was looking. It was 93+F. I drank a lot of water! Working another job today so I am driving the minivan. I never thought I would like owning a van but it is quite useful but no ride today either. It will be lowest riding mileage in a couple months but it is still 122 more miles than June last year :) |
Wow, pleasant and dry this morning but already clouding up. Crews were on the mup cleaning up branches (huge ones) and trees that have fallen because of the storms.

This was the first week since I started commuting about 8 weeks ago that I was able to ride everyday to and from work because of the nice weather! Very pleased :) ...
However, there were a few idiots on my ride home this evening. :notamused: The first one was a cyclist going the wrong way who was coming for me head-on on a two-way four lane street lined with parked cars. Really dude?? Where do you expect me to go? Where do you expect to go? He wasn't even looking up or straight ahead. He finally looked up when I yelled "hey idiot!" :D The next was a cabbie who right hooked me. Fine. Whatever. But no, he right hooked me, then changed his mind as I tried to pass on the left and cut me off to enter back in to traffic. No signal. Thanks guy. The next idiot, believe it or not, was another cyclist coming at me head-on on the same street!! He got a mouthful and I got an eff-u! He got one too. And finally an impatient motorist in the crawling left lane decided to bust a move into the right lane and then had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting me. Idiot. |
On the cooler side this morning but wasn't bad. Looks like they be closing another road on my route.. welcome to KCMO we'll close whatever road we want! In the morning isn't a issue but the evening commute is getting dangerous.. without going 5 mies out of the way no way to avoid it. Starting to hate KCMO with a passion.

It was a damp ride for the last four miles of my ride. The temp was 54f degrees when I left the house and cloudy skies. I took the ride that takes me past the gardens that I love and, the I saw a flock of wild turkeys. So all in all a good ride today!

A bit unusually cool today, but it made for a refreshing ride in.

63F and rain. Of course the weekend was beautiful! I was convinced by a couple friends to do Indy's annual NITE ride - 3,500 people riding in the dark. I did it several years ago and now I remember why I haven't done it since then - riding in the dark isn't the unique experience for me that apparently it is for others. And the real kicker is it doesn't start until 11p - way past my bedtime

66F on the ride in this morning with a slight head wind, but nothing major... Expected to be 97F on the ride home. Central Valley of Cali.
|
56F this morning on the ride in this morning it was so wonderful at the hot humid temps we have had! I think it will be 85 on the way home. 56 reminded me of some fall rides. I loved it. I just wish i was not running late and could have ridden longer.

Today's commute ended with a bang. Literally. About a third of the way into my 20km commute I hit a piece of debris (never did figure out what) and put a big slice in the side wall of my year old Schwalbe Marathon Plus. Of course when I put the new tube in and started to inflate, it began bulging out the side and clearly would have blown. I ended up cutting off a large chunk of the old tube and used it to wrap the new tube in that spot on the tire so that it did not bulge too badly. Managed to limp home and took the truck to work. $80 later I will be back on the road tomorrow with a new tire. Happy days!

A nice commute to work today. I took the route that takes me past my favorite gardens and also a very bumpy patched road. My rear blinkie fell off on the bumpy road. The good part is I heard it fall and was able to retrieve all the parts, it is all put back together and working. Lucky me!

I was off last Friday and yesterday. And this week will be further shortened due to the 4th holiday. My weekly mileage is lower as a result, but it is nice to get a break from the office. Good ride this morning. I had one barking dog run across his yard toward the street only to be jerked back by one of those leash anchors drilled into the yard. I could see the anchor come up a little, so a couple more yanks and he may just be free and dragging it around. |
Roads were wet from last night's rain but no rain and 63F. There is flooding all over the place and the river I cross looks like class 3 rapids. More rain forecast - update at 11

Nice uneventful commute yesterday morning, except for having to hold in #2 for most of the 2nd half of 15 miles. I made it though.
Not bad going home yesterday, though I had less of a headwind and more of a crosswind than I was expecting, so I wasn't quite as fast. Had one of the very rare occurrences of a guy honking as he approached behind me, but then changed lanes fully to pass. I turned and motioned my arm out like "What??" as he passed. We both stopped at the red light but neither of us engaged the other, and we went on our way (him left before me, then me straight). |
Going to be a hot one today... 72F this morning as compared to the 66F yesterday. Expected to hit 104+ today...
