Back at it today after a few weeks of heat wave. I drove the truck to the mechanic for a brake job and rode from there. The bike path route I took was about 1.5x longer than roads would have been, but I had time. I was on the east side of the lake - Folsom is so nice to ride in. I was worried in the afternoon as the area filled with smoke but it had cleared out by quitting time. For the ride home I took the road, met the wife back at the mechanic, and we took the toddler out for Thai.

A very nice uneventful commute on the garden view route. The temp was 61f degrees when I left the house with mostly cloudy skies.

Yesterday afternoon presented a series of thunderstorms. My wife was already dropping a child off at ballet halfway to the office, so she came on down to rescue me. I probably would have been okay with just a little rain, but played it safe anyway.

72F and 90% humidity this morning and forecast is for 100. Anything above 95 makes it hard to get going, but once I'm moving and get a constant wind, it isn't too horrible.

I saw the corgi again this morning, but he didn't chase or anything. He is definitely hanging out too close to the road though. I also saw a police car parked at the entrance to the MUP. A quarter mile later I saw the officer walking on the path. I said good morning as I went by and he replied, "Good Morning, sir." I'm not sure what he was looking for.

In the high 50's this morning. Thought I was going to be cold but it felt great! And finally a break in the rain, had it both in and out yesterday and the day before. Had to ask myself yesterday why I beat myself up by riding in the rain.. then I passed a bbq joint and doughnut shop. Oh yeah that's why, I love food! A bit tired overall this week. Had to ride a extra 10 miles Tuesday to get my drivers license renewed. Got some looks on that one!

arsprod 07-09-15 07:29 AM

Windy and rain, temps in low 70's. I didn't think to tuck my jacket hood in and a couple times it actually launched into a drogue chute - had to unzip to keep it from choking me. Trying to figure a way to wear the jacket backwards for the ride home to get a pull!

Beautiful morning ride. 59 degrees and low humidity. Cruised right along. Played hockey twice yesterday, second time late at night, so I was running on about 5 hours of sleep. Legs were good this morning, suspecting they'll be pretty dead for the ride home.

GovernorSilver 07-09-15 08:02 AM

Nice morning ride. 75 to 80 F with humidity in the high 70s. Dew point below 70 though.

This is the first time in a while that I've seen the weather forecast diverge between DC and No. VA - they're usually in lockstep. 50% chance of rain in Dc, only 10% in VA later this afternoon/early evening.

tarwheel 07-09-15 08:10 AM

Very hot and humid with high expected to reach near 100 F and dewpoint in the 70s. I drove yesterday because I had my annual physical at the doctor's office, and the day off from the heat and humidity was a relief. For some reason, my legs seem to get a lot more tired when we have very hot and humid weather, and they were still tired this morning even after taking a recovery day.

Wonderful..this is the 'high' fun summer time for commuting here in Toronto..starting to really warm up this weekend thought but compared to -15C I'll take it.. PanAm games start here tomorrow..drivers in for a rough time, many seem to have abandoned the city today..we have those HOV lanes now for the duration..wow should here the screaming & wailing over it..feel a bit sorry for them..

GovernorSilver 07-09-15 06:41 PM

Slow day at work, so I left early to try to beat a supposed thunderstorm home. 90 F, 80% humidity, dew point probably in the high 60s F so I was feeling it more than in the morning. Challenged that switchback connecting two of the MUPs I ride in the evening and was once again defeated. I did manage to climb and turn for parts of it - just not all the way. Climbing with sharp turns at the same time still kick my butt. Soon felt exhausted for the remainder of the ride, but managed to climb up to my house where I collapsed into a puddle as usual. I thought the hill was only 7% grade, but Strava claims it starts at just over 9% and levels off to 7%.

San Pedro 07-09-15 11:44 PM

Rode home into the wind last night, and I was dogging it, but at one point I came up to a light where a truck was just starting to go at the green light. I decided to sit behind and try to keep up with it as long as possible. Next thing I know I'm going 28.5 mph comfortably behind it. It was lot of fun going that fast for the amount of effort I was putting in on flat ground. In not too long though the truck turned and I was hit by the head wind. Made it home tired, but my time was pretty good thanks to the drafting and well timed lights.

This morning I took the long route (10.5 miles compared to 8 with a little bit of climb in it). I was pretty tired, The humidity was really high but temps in the low 70s (rainy season is still lingering). Overall this week, I'm really glad I could ride as much as I did with all the rain we've been getting here.

essiemyra 07-10-15 05:25 AM

The commute this morning was wetter than I was up for. So I turned around at close to the two mile marker. Went home and got my car. I did not want to start the day out soaking wet. I do not mind ending the day that way, but I refuse to start the day that way.

mgw4jc 07-10-15 06:24 AM

Yesterday's forecast high of 100F turned out to be about 96 when I left work. It was hot, especially for the first couple of miles. But the humidity was only about 30%, so it was a dry heat. It kinda feels like when you open an oven and it takes your breath away for a moment.

A small neighborhood that I usually cut through had some road work going on. They had a road closed sign up, but I was able to hop on a sidewalk and sneak through. I figured it would still be going on this morning so I took an alternate route in.

Friday is here. I will be 9/10 this week if I ride home tonight. Tomorrow morning I may have a "commute" to meet some running friends. That would be good to add a few more miles for the week.

KCBikeCommuter 07-10-15 07:56 AM

Temps in the low 60's this morning, but pretty humid. Skies were clear until I hit the river, then it was extremely foggy the rest of the way to work. Think I'll do the Bike/Bus combo for the evening commute to make it home in time to get the yard mowed.

RidingMatthew 07-10-15 10:04 AM

71F this morning and humid. Some reason was able to squeeze 18 miles into my 11 mile ride to work this morning. Took a lap around the lake on gravel :)

ride home 95-96F and just plain hot, my air conditioning at home felt so good. I was in shorts and a shirt and my wife was walking around in long pants, shirt and vest. I said you need to spend some time outside. :)

enigmaT120 07-10-15 12:46 PM

It was in the mid-50s or so, cloudy and a bit humid but the roads were dry. I love biking in the daylight where I can enjoy my scenery. I'm working in Salem today so will be able to catch a bus that lets me off in Monmouth, so I'll get a much longer (but flatter!) ride home. Well, if I get to the bus before his bike rack fills up!

Very nice! Are you logging your miles on the National Bike Challenge this year?

RidingMatthew 07-10-15 02:32 PM

This year and last year. I achieved Platnium last night!

Yesterday on the way home, I explored some dirt trails. I found some awesome downhill segments and at least one trail that's definitely been built up by bike people, with rises and berms. I'm trying to find a route from my home that only goes along pavement when I get to the Hazel bridge. Totality might depend on waiting for the weeds to die back, they lean in over the single track and get pretty scratchy in some places.

timvan_78 07-10-15 05:18 PM

awesome commute this AM. Perfect temps. It might actually rain a bit on the parched ground this weekend. I've never seen vancouver so happy to see rain. The other day a big bug hit my forehead and went up inside my helmet--sure enough: a bee in my bonnet!

same thing happened during the olympics...it all worked out fine.

San Pedro 07-13-15 12:43 AM

80F this morning with 80% humidity, but a 12mph tail wind had me flying to work.

metro2005 07-13-15 02:25 AM

Tailwind which was nice but it kept raining the whole time. Pretty wet when i got to work :(

essiemyra 07-13-15 05:15 AM

It was a humid but nice commute this morning. I was riding along the road when I spotted a big dog in what appeared to be his front yard. I am not a fan of dogs I do not know especially with how big he was. I had never seen him before when riding that route. He did not appear to have a chain on him nor did I see a sign for the leash fences. I slowed down and kind of looked at him and he did not bark nor move at all. I also moved to the other side of the road. So for me it was a very good thing.

mgw4jc 07-13-15 06:20 AM

Ack! I hurt my calf running this weekend. Self diagnosis (aka Googling) is a grade 2 muscle strain. So no biking for a couple of days I suppose. My wife brought me in this morning and will pick me up tonight. She needs the one car we have during the day for various reasons.

On the bright side, I watched some movies, read, and ate more than my share of ice cream this weekend.

txcrash 07-13-15 06:33 AM

77 and clear, first multimodal commute ever. 2 miles to the train, 2.4 miles from the train to the office. The ride home will be near 100, but I'll go further on principle.

Nice day for a ride, and nice start to the day.
