Hot! but riding
I haven't rode the commute since spring. This week I decided to ignore the heat and try bimodal bike/train commute. Monday 11.5 miles round trip on the bike, Tuesday 9.5 miles roundtrip. Still adjusting to the heat, it's been 108-110 in the afternoon, nearly unbearable if you aren't acclimated and are out of shape. Today I drove, tomorrow I need to drive. Plan to bike again on Friday and continue after that. Writing this to make it happen. :) Really looking forward to cooler temps...November? arizona desert - beautiful but deadly.

Second day riding the fixed gear to work... It seems I may like this more than I expected!

Yeah and I usually do. This was annual physical and I had to fast - too far to ride with no food!

Very pleasant ride in this morning after returning from a two-day business trip. I'd like to ride tomorrow, but the forecast is for afternoon thunderstorms. Should I risk it?
I was thinking also about trying the fixed gear with my backpack, since I don't have to lug either the computer or a lunch. I've rarely tackled the kinds of hills that surround my house on the fixed gear in the past. It'd be a substantial test of mettle... |
My first day back after a long weekend of bicycle touring. It was a very nice commute to work today, and I found a wallet that needs to be returned to its owner. I notice every day the sun is coming up just a bit later.
|
I had the day off yesterday to celebrate my daughter's birthday. She turned 10 and we all went to a water park. A pretty good day with the family.
Back on this morning with a couple of extra miles for 14 total. Not as humid this week as last week, which has been nice. |
Beautiful yesterday and I couldn't ride - rainy and yucky today... figures. Finding the bright spot - I bought some new, more compact shoe covers for upcoming trip and discovered they totally suck. I'd rather have wet shoes that I can dry at work than in the middle of the wilderness where they're my only shoes

Cooler this morning but ughh headwind made it super slow at 1h 24m total elapsed to go 15.5 miles. :(

Nice temperature (68F) this morning, but fairly humid. Stopped by the Scout statue on my way in.

@KCBikeCommuter that is a great picture and cool statue.. thanks for sharing. WHat kind of bike is that?
I rode some extra miles this morning since it is supposed to rain tonight. I will probably be getting wet. I am riding my non fendered bike and not looking forward to it. Hopefully DHL will deliver tires tonight! I also surpassed my goal for this year 2712 miles as of this mornings ride. Last year I rode 2700 total. |
Thanks RidingMatthew! The bike is a Trek Crossrip LTD.

Just switched to Northwave Jet 365s and a set of PD A600s last night, made the hills a little bit less laborious and more enjoyable this morning.
Changing the fork as well if I can ever get one of my LBSs to sell me a 1-1/8 star nut. One says "oh we don't stock those" and the other sold me a 1". And this is why I buy online... |
It's hot as hell this week, so commutes are short and there's been a stiff headwind both ways on home side and a stiff headwind going to work, but that means a stiff tailwind going home.
Next week's mileage will drop due to some evening commitments that'll require driving m-w, but I'll still try to get some leg spinning time in, somehow, someway. |
It was a very nice uneventful commute this morning. A little on the cooler side so I put on a light jacket.
I was able to return the wallet yesterday to its rightful owner. He gave me a twenty for my efforts. Nice!! |

At 85F, the temp was the lowest it's been all summer for yesterday's ride home. There were scattered showers about but none on me.
Pretty good ride in this morning. My average speed is usually around 16.5 mph, but when I saw my average for this morning getting over 17, I tried to keep it up there. Therefore I ended up at work early, even though I added a couple of miles. I was doing a cool down mile circling around a shopping center. A gaggle was wondering around the parking area between Kohl's and Lowe's. I decided to stop and take their picture. I tried to get a little closer, but they would waddle away from me. Instead I opted for the mirror selfie with geese in the background. They seemed to be making their way to Lowe's most likely for some duck tape. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=469715 |
Pretty good riding. I drove in yesterday but brought a bike, just in case it wasn't storming in the afternoon. Ended up catching a window between two storms and rode from my office to the wife's and carpooled home. First time doing it on my singlespeed (Trek Soho)
http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0ajjhyye.jpg I could hear thunder echoing off of the buildings when riding down Main St from the approaching storm. This morning I got to see a bunch of knocked down trees and branches. I am liking the new route I found, as it is 80% this http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...pswdvsgsiy.jpg |
Holy crap, 57F this morning - that's with a "5." Sorry for you guys having constant heat but I'll take a little. My last commute for a week - heading to Pittsburgh Sunday to ride the GAP/C&O with my son. See you all soon!

Got out the door early, tried catching the early train but my legs didn't have it in them. Car at a crosswalk (I had the walking man signal) tried hitting me. Waved and yelled and the sob honked at me.
Headwind on the work side slowed me down, but it was a good ride. Gf is picking me up tonight from work, so it'll be a short week. Heat plus night time obligations has put a major dent in my riding so far, and next week is supposed to be hotter and I have night time obligations that'll have me caging it Monday through Wednesday. I expect to blast the roads on Thursday after that much rest for my legs. |
Had a meeting with my boss this morning, but my boss has two offices in different parts of the city. He didn't specify which office, so I guessed, and guessed wrong. Then it was a 30-block hammer in my work clothes to the other office and I arrived at the meeting 7 minutes late in a sweaty mess. Nice way to start the day.

Nice again. About 54 degrees and clear. It's pretty dark now at 5:00 when I leave the house, but only for about 15 minutes. I'll still probably add my helmet light next week, in addition to my hub dynamo powered head and tail lights. Mostly because I need to see what's not on the road in front of me, yet -- deer, wild turkeys, whatever.
|
I rode 5 days this week. Monday a 11 mile ride around the house then drove everything in. Lunches and clothes. I rode 4 days to work this week on my road bike. It actually did really well and I think I might mix things up a little bit. It was fast and fun.
I installed my new tires on the commuting bike. I rode them today. That bike is just a touch twitchy -ier and the new tires felt kinda weird. It was a weird adjustment after being off of it for a week. |
It was a very nice fast easier commute to work today. What a difference new skinnier tires make! I did not know but now I do. So back to the commute it was 56f degrees when I left the house with mostly clear skies. I love my new tires!!
|
73F / 23C rains were coming down as I prepared to ride in this morning but they stopped by the time I hit the road. I love those wet street mornings.
Starting to stay darker later. Bought my wife a brand new Electra yesterday, cannot wait to ride together. |
