help with Schwinn Tailwind

Im hoping someone on here could help me out. Very recently ive aquired a Schwinn Tailwind from the original owner. The bike came with everything included; charger, battery and key. Ive charged the battery and put it into the bike, taken the key and put it into the ignition (near the battery) and turned it but I cant seem to get the bike to run electrically? I keep pressing "power mode" and "on/off" buttons which are located on the control pannel on the left side of the handlebar but nothing, it doesnt even turn on. Ive tried pedaling around the block while pressing the same buttons on the control pannel and it still doesnt work. Can someone tell me what im doing wrong? thanks ahead of time

ok, first thought: it's possible to lock the battery 'in' the casing without actually getting it far enough in to touch the contacts on the bike. look carefully at the little metal bar that slides up when you turn the locking mechanism. it should be sliding up INTO the red plastic handle attached to the battery. if you see it slide up into the space between the battery and the handle, you haven't slid the battery in far enough.
