Do you have reason to think it can ?. I was just being curmudgeonly but had to wonder if Garmin locked out that feature to force you to use their $130 extra battery. Note that the USB port on the unit is not mounted on the flat bottom like the 1000 but is on the side/bottom nearest the h-bar if using an out front. Looks to me and from the DC Rainmaker photo's you'd require some form of right angle connector.
But really all the question is, has anybody actually tried it or read that it works ?. Its curiosity is all and useful for anyone considering paying $600 to know this (should they do a forum search). DC Rainmaker doesn't touch on it and this thread has 6 pages, so when I get a moment I'll read them all.

As mentioned, Garmin has sold a proprietary battery pack for many years, but has allowed other Edge and Forerunners to work from any power source. So the existence of a battery pack doesn't mean the exclusion of others.
Because being able to run while charging (from any power source) is a competitive feature for people who do long rides.
I agree a good test is better than any number of opinions. But I think these are good reasons to expect that it should work.

I read that someone was using a right-angle connector and a regular battery but someone just needs to try this. I will likely end up with the 1030 but since my 510 is adequate (just about) I'll hang on to it till the 1030 runs a bit clean. I'd be so pissed if I ordered it and all sorts of bugs prevented it from working. I'd likely buy from some online retailer and I suspect would have to jump through some hoops if I wanted to return it.

I upgraded from a 510 to the new 1030 two weeks ago. So far my experience has been good. I down loaded the entire manual and read it through. I lot more info than the quick start quite that is included.
I followed the directions closely since I had read many less than good comments. It setup and linked perfectly. I then tested it on my road bike that has a duo-tap speed/cadence sensor and it immediately connected and worked fine. I have also used it on two other bikes without sensors with good results.
I have noticed two things I want to mention. First I am connecting it to an iPhone 6 that is running the latest IOS. In my settings-Bluetooth I noticed that the 1030 had added two devices. One labeled BT_Edge 1030 and the other just Edge 1030. I that this was odd so I deleted one and started having problems connecting. After deleting and starting over, this time leaving both devices showing I have not had connection problems. I also took the advice of several forum posters from another forum and always open the Garmin Connect app on my phone before turning on my 1030. Although this was not required with my 510 it has been implied that it is necessary with the 1030. Once I connect I can change to other apps as long as I do not close the Garmin Connect app.
Bottom line - I love the bigger screen and the nav features.

There's a standard BT connection for the Connect app, the 2nd (BlueTooth LE) allows text and cell call notifications as well as as (I believe) Live Track.
My wife told me she is very happy when I use Live Track as it alleviates some of her concerns about me being out on the road or trails when I'm riding solo.

I'm travelling and need for a week maps of this area - I'm aware of open cyclo maps or openfietsmap (OFM), but the catch with OFM is that it doesn't scale above 1.2km/.8mi (or so) - I mean, the screen goes blank if you change the scale above this number. Pretty bad if you get lost and need to zoom out to find out where you are. And switching maps is a tedious work. Is there any web allowing to create OFM map covering all scales?? Or any other solution?
