Thumbs up CREE LED confusion

so most flashlight seems to use either this one
https://www.cree.com/products/xlamp_mce.asp#xrcselector
or this one
https://www.cree.com/products/xlamp70...sp#xreselector

looking at that stuff, i have no clue which one is for Throw and which one is for Flood.

what i do know, is that i'm using a few of these, and i love it!
MTE SSC P7 C-Bin 900-Lumen 8-Mode LED Flashlight (1*18650)
https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13060

I know that model is for Flood.

As mentioned on some other thread i'm shopping for more for my new bike, also want to buy some for Throw, since i got plenty of Flood.

so i find this one that looks very interesting
MTE M3-2 Cree MC-E 8-Mode 700-Lumen LED Flashlight with Assault Crown (1*18650)
https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16501

but i'm confused if this one is for Throw or Flood

I'm considering getting the highly recommended Fenix with 200m Throw, but before that, i wanted to see if there are other more choices and brands.

Super Thrower Far Projection 3W

Neither the P7 or the MC-E are truly 'throw' LEDs, although I've found that my MTE M3-2 (w/o assault crown - I don't need sharp pieces of metal strapped to my bike.....) provides enough throw for biking at 30-35 KPH due to the massive amount of light it has.

There are some P7/MC-E lights that are more throwie, but they are massive, and in my opinion to large to effectively use on a bike.

exactly
i want a short one, like the P7 i'm using those are just 1 battery.
those that uses 2 battery are way too long for bike use.

however i'm still trying to figure out what's the difference between
CREE XR-E vs. CREE MC-E

You might be better off with a throwie Q5/R2 light strapped to your helmet in combination with the P7 on your bars. This is what I use and find it to be quite effective.

EDIT: The MC-E is a quad emitter led, which in a nutshell is basically four leds in one. The XR-E is one led, which can put out around 230 lumens. The XR-E will have less light, but a longer runtime and more throw. The Q5 and R2 are from the XR-E series of leds, with the R2 being the brighter.

that's exactly what i'm doing, i want the throw on my helmet so i can lit up what i see, whenever i want to quickly glance at something at night in the park paths

the Flood P7 is just good for lighting up everything around.

right now i came down with these 2 choices, can't decide which to pick.

Aurora WF-600 HA-III 2-Mode Cree Q5 LED Flashlight (18650/CR123A/3.6V~9V)
https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8537
vs.
Fenix TK10 Cree Q5 225-Lumen Water-proof HA-III LED Flashlight (2*CR123A)
https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13481

from the pictures the Aurora seems to have a better Throw than the Fenix, and it can use 18650, which is what i'd rather carry with me, since all my flashlights uses the same, it'll make it easier to swap around.

---EDIT---
hmm... it might be over rated,
but i found this nice expensive Fenix TK11 Black, R2 Edition [TK11B-R2]
https://www.fenix-store.com/product_...roducts_id=650
i'll give it a try, should be better than the TK10 and TK11

Also check out the offerings over at www.shiningbeam.com

FWIW, I've found that a strobe on my helmet during the daytime makes me much more visible to cars.

Here's a good site to compare different lights.

Yes do this. Remember though, don't get sucked into the P7=flood mantra. My MTE P7s have practically the same beam pattern as a Fenix L2D which is an XR-E light thanks to a decently deep reflector. The combo I run right now is dual P7s on the bars, one pointed low and one high-ish. In addition to that I use an R2 thrower on my helmet to look into turns or at things of interest. Using a throwey light on it's own though is not good in my experience, it doesn't illuminate the stuff that you're going to hit in the next 3-5 seconds very well which is most important and you also get into a "tunnel-vision" kind of mode.

The L-mini is very nice size for a helmet light.. The new model supports protected cells a little better than version 1, which is what I use.. For the ultimate thrower the Fenix TK11 fits that bills but is little longer and heavier light..

This one is a bit of a thrower:

1200 lumens, wouldn't make a very good helmet light though....

Both of those lights have good throw and output, but one thing I don't like about them is that they don't have a strobe, which I find very useful for daytime riding in city traffic.

I've been using a SolarForce L2 body (18650) with a DX Drop-in on my helmet and am very happy with it. The quality is very good.

Right now there is a guy selling complete L2 lights on CPF for 29.95 shipped CONUS. The lights are 3.7-8.4V, so I'm not sure exactly how bright they will be on one 18650. I've ordered one, and should be able to test it against my 3.7-4.2V drop-in, but it'll be a while before I can do so. https://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/sho...d.php?t=195384

One nice thing about the L2 is that it takes a P-60 sized drop-in, which means that you can change the LED as technology changes as easy as changing a light bulb. There are also several Hong Kong based sellers (SolarForce Store is one, I haven't used them) that ship internationally for no extra charge.

The original L-mini has strobe and SOS modes.. I did not notice that it no longer has those modes..

Jaa, I know. I think all the anti-strobe people on CPF killed it off. I have no idea why strobe is so hated over there; if you don't like it don't use it......

Honestly I think strobe is way overkill at night but useful during the day or especially at dusk. I wish someone would put in a standard strobe of around 90 flashes per minute.. For a long time I used a PT EOS on the helmet and the strobe was 90 pulses per minute which was just perfect for being seen..

+1

A bright strobe at night is bad for me as a rider as it's very distracting and I can't actually see anything in front of me, and it must be extremely annoying and even dangerous for drivers.
