Newbie - Need computer suggestions

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking and considering getting into cycling for about 2 months now, and last week I finally purchased my first "real" MTB. I bought a Specialized Myka, which was the lower end of bikes, but at least not a department store bike. I'm a college kid, and wanted to at least get something "real" but couldn't afford spending more than $400 on the bike itself. I'm primarily getting into cycling because I no longer have the option to horseback ride daily, and HATE running. I love being outdoors, and cycling seems like the best option for me! I also need to lose about 45lbs, and what better way to do it than while doing something I enjoy.

Ok, so to the question itself. Now that I have a bike, I'd like to go ahead and purchase a computer for it. I really don't need anything super cool, but would like something that keeps track of my speed, cadence, and mileage (and heart rate if possible). I currently have an android phone, and would also love to find an app on their that I can use to keep track of my route.

So, what are a couple of computer options that won't run me a ton of money (think college bank account here!!) and does anyone have a suggestion for an Android app to keep track of my route?

The Garmin Edge 500 looks really nice, but its way more than what I can currently afford! I should have been more specific, I'm looking for something in the <$30 price range!

Edge is way more than you need if are just starting out. Get something cheap or on sale at Performance or Nashbar. You will pay a little more for wireless, and for $30 it's doubtful you can get cadence and heart rate. That's ok - for starting out just get a basic computer, you can always upgrade later after you see if this cycling thing 'sticks'. Many of us started out with a basic computer - used to calculate cadence and HR on the fly. It's nice to know information but not crucial for someone just starting out. Can't help you on the Android app - iPhone user here.

Here's a link to another forum post that might give you some ideas.
