Sub-$100 headlight for city riding
#26
... Even if the lumen rating is off some, at 1300, it can be off 400, and be at 900, which will still be good enough for my application. I plan on switching out the, IMO good 270lumen $4 lights, and put them on my helmets, and put the so-called 1300 lum flashlights up front..They come with the flashlight, 2x 18650 rechargable batteries, charger, blinking rear light, and the handlebar mount for the flashlight. All at a whooping $32.00 with free shipping.. Even if the flashlight doesn't work, at that price, I won't be mad..

B&M Lumotec Lyt is $33 from Peter White, and a Sanyo dynohub is $35. Buy some spokes, lace up your rim on the dynohub and never give batteries or runtime a thought.

I got these for about $3.25 for one, and $4.10 for the other one. They come with the mounting brackets and a rear blinky, also with its mounting bracket. They are rated at 270 lums. To tell the truth, I wouldn't care what they are rated at for the price I paid. I know they light up the way for me. I am driving in traffic where they have lights on the road. So, I don't need anything extremly bright. And the real bright stuff gets the LIGHT POLICE riled up,and I don't want to do that!!

Flashlights run off 3 AAA batteries, the rear blink run off 2 AAA. I am running cheap rechargables, everythng is working..
Also, like I said before, they look cool too..

The rear blinky on the rear..

They are bright and quite sturdy, but the output is a bit too focused for the perfect taillight and most attempts to diffuse reduces output and they require some inventiveness to attach to the bike (there are several How To articles here though).

The arm of the SG comes off with 2 allen hex screws, but thats not quick. You dont want to take off the mounting bracket ever. When I take the bike in for work, I just remove the arm.

If you have an old flashlight you like or an old bicycle light you could put in an LED flashlight module I have seen these at K mart and Walmart and a few camping stores around $25 they work with 2 to 5 batteries. 4 nickle zinc batteries will have the voltage of 5 NiMh batteries. Wald flashlight holders are nice add a couple of rubber bands if you are paranoid.

How about the Lezyne Super Drive? It's sells for around $100, is USB chargeable, and has a user replaceable battery.
Here's a review of it. https://reviews.mtbr.com/lezyne-super...ights-shootout

The strobes on the Minewts are way too intense and not in a good way. The only time I ever used that one in strobe was riding through fog where I couldn't see more than 200 ft ahead. Night time and rain doesn't even begin to compare to thick fog.

You'll need a red diode for red light out the back for best performance.

LEDs don't work that way. Unlike filament bulbs, LEDs only emit light at specific wavelengths. Most of the LEDs you see on headlamps are what are considered cool white meaning most of the output is towards the blue end of the spectrum because those tend to have more light ouput. There is very little output at the red end. If you put a red cover over the light, then you will loose probably 90% of the output.

yepper...I put a red reflector over my 200 lm flashlights and yes the output is diminished (I would not say they dropped by 90% - more like 30% at the most, to my eye) for the daytime, nighttime they still put out a very good strobe/steady light - no SuperFlash but all in all I am happy with my 'el cheapo' temporary lighting.

the red is red when looking at them and the amber lenses make them amber out the front....
