Garmin Connect Users: Decipher the Difference in these Times

So there is a time, a moving time, and an elapsed time. Can you please explain to me the difference between the three? I searched the googles.

I only seem to get these three times when I use a non-Garmin device. Apparently there are two categories of "not going": Completely stopped, and below some certain speed. And these are apparently accounted for differently. Or something...

Well I think I know what "moving time" refers to and what "elapsed time" refers to, however I'm not sure what the differences are between " time " and "elapsed time". Looks like a good question to run by the people who run the Garmin website.

"Elapsed Time" is the total time between the starting and stopping the ride. "Moving Time" is the time you were in motion as determined by GC. "Time" is the time you were in motion as determined by the autopause function of the device.

I'm pretty sure....

The elapsed time refers to the total time that your Garmin was on before it was either powered down and synched, which will create a new file, or you hit "lap," which will create a break in the TCX file. It counts your stopped time and everything. Time indicates the time between the point at which you hit the stop and start buttons to begin and end your ride and of course moving time is the time you're actually moving on the bike and not stopped at lights.

My 705 doesn't work that way. Elapsed Time is the time between pressing Start and Stop. I'm sticking with my definitions above.

Bikes: Cannondale Synapse '06, Mongoose titanium road bike '00--my commuter. Yes, Mongoose once made a decent ti road bike.

This is a commute from last week:

Timing
Time: 1:14:53
Moving Time: 1:14:19
Elapsed Time: 10:36:18
Avg Speed: 16.3 mph
Avg Moving Speed: 16.4 mph
Max Speed: 28.7 mph

Elapsed time is certainly the time from when I hit start until I stopped the timer when I got home, with an 8.5 hour interval of work. commuting to and from work included quite a bit of 'pause' time which is not reflected here. So once again, what is 'Time' and 'Moving Time'?

How are the Time measurements defined at Garmin Connect?

Garmin Connect provides three Time measurements on the Details page:

Time

Time is the recording time reported by the device. For Fitness devices, this should equal the Time value reported on the device. For other devices, this should equal the amount of time elapsed from the actual Start and Finish time of an activity.

Avg Speed/Pace is based off the Time value.

Moving Time

Garmin Connect calculates Moving Time by removing the amount of time when the user is stopped. This is helpful for customers who upload activities with a Garmin device that either don't have AutoPause or have AutoPause turned off. For those who have AutoPause turned on or hit the Stop and Start button in the middle of an activity, the Moving Time should be very close or equal to Time.

Avg Moving Speed/Pace is based off the Moving Time value.

Elapsed Time

Garmin Connect calculates the Elapsed Time by the amount of time elapsed from the actual Start and Finish time of an activity. This is helpful for customers with a Garmin device that have AutoPause turned on or hit the Stop and Start button in the middle of an activity. For those who don't have AutoPause or have that feature turned off on their device, Elapsed time should be very close or equal to Time.

Garmin's timing is still clear as mud for me.

^^^

Elapsed time is clock time (it includes riding and any real stops, like for lunch).

Time includes time spent actually moving and brief stops (like traffic lights).

Moving time is time spent moving (not including brief stops).

It seems you can change the speed below which it's considered stopped. (I think the default is 2.5 mph, mostly to point out how it works.)
