Bryton Rider 40 Review
Well I bought a Bryton Rider 40 and have ridden 400 miles with it installed. Since their is not many reviews, I thought I would give it a shot.
Purchase Facts
Purchased from Merlincycles.com. The computer and a heart rate monitor cost $180. I also purchased a Garmin speed/cadence sensor from Amazon for $35.
Setup
It was a breeze. Everything worked as expected. I quickly had the computer reading the speed and cadence sensors. I also quickly customized my displays.
Operation
My first ride did not go very well. I did not get the unit into record mode, so I had no data to play with. Once I figured the start function everything has worked perfect. As a bike computer it works great. I customized my display, so the main display gives me speed, cadence, heart rate, and distance. I love this feature as my previous computer was not customizable. Readouts on the unit are fine in all types of lighting. One small gripe is that the mode switch is on the left hand side. I would have preferred the right.
As a training aid it also works great. The workouts are heart rate based and it is very easy to follow the guidance. It took me a couple of miles to get used to adjusting my heart rate, It is now second nature. Additionally, I find myself doing interval workouts on my normal rides, just for fun.
The navigation feature works flawlessly. I created multiple paths from within the Bryton planning sw. I have ridden various paths and have never had an issue. It just works. In track mode it does take a second or two to switch between pages. Not a big deal, but I would like it to be instaneous when going from the track mode to the bike computer mode. I understand a load time for the track mode, but not the bike computer page.
Bryton website is OK for storing data or creating maps, but it is not near as good as Strava. Fortunately it has a dedicated button to upload data to Strava. I typically upload directly from the Bryton Rider 40 to Bryton sports. Then upload it from Brytonsports to Strava. This leaves no extra data on the computer.
Summary
I really like this GPS computer. I have never owned a Garmin bike computer. I decided to go with Bryton due to all the problems Garmin was having with navigation on their edge 500 Units. So far I am glad I went with Bryton. It just works and makes my rides even more fun.
One additional note. I purchased a SRAM out front mount. It was designed for Garmin units. Cool thing is it works perfect form the Bryton Rider 40 as well.
Well I am done rambling. I hope this has been helpful.
