Best is of course subjective, and prepare to get 20 different opinions.
I've personally used Endomondo and Strava iPhone apps. If I didn't use/need the social aspect of Strava I was perfectly happy with Endomondo.

Cyclemeter!
You will need to get a HR monitor, I use the Whaoo one with the Cyclemeter App.

Many options, most of which are free so try some out.
Runkeeper, mapmyride, strava, cyclometer, etc.
I like Strava, partially for the social features, but also went to strava premium largely to track my personal best and compare against that on particular segments. I don't EVER expect to be KOM for any segments as I am not that fast but for me it is motivating to try to beat myself and set new personal bests.
Cyclometer looks very interesting and allows uploading to Strava.

I would have said Strava, which is what i use on my iPhone5. My wife loaded Strava on her Samsung Note II and the interface differences with the iOS version are not minor... I.e. on iOS I can go to start recording in one tap, on the Note II it's like 3 or so. Maybe it's configurable, I have not found how. Nonetheless it's a fun app, nothing like being 249th out of 250 for your segments

What do you mean going to sleep? The app should run in the background. If you are wanting to watch the screen, then you will have to turn the lock timeout off.
For me, I purchased a Wahoo RFLKT. This mounts on the handlebars and displays all the stats from the phone.
Also, I have the App announcing my stats every 15 minutes and every five miles. This way you do not have to even see the screen.

Then select what you want. I have mine set to "on when recording."
