If there is anyone here that has a 2016 Madone I would like them to message me so we can start a dialogue about a few accessories I am thinking about modeling.

So I spent some time working on a few items for the Trek Madone. I don't own a Madone and have no access to a seat post so I am working off the built in tail light mount. One thing that is obvious from the tail light mount is that it isn't simply a snap in item. There is a spring catch. Shapeways or any other service like it, is just a print service and not a full fledged manufacturer. I am limited in what I can do with it. But I did order Trek part number W516121 which is the Flare mount specifically for the Madone. I have disassembled it and saw how they put it together and I can work with this.

Two things result from trying to repurpose the Trek mount, first it does require that you actually have part W516121 and second I am limited in what we can attach to the mount. I can actually design a few adapters that mount in place of the Flare tail light mount and the first ones I have worked on are for the Cygolite Hotshot and the Garmin Varia.







One more thing that concerns me is the very small mounting area, it is only 10 x 12 mm square. Even though there is a 4 mm bolt and nut that hold it together I am not sure that the 'Strong and Flexible Nylon' is adequate enough to hold a heavier attachment, or can be made strong enough to keep if from vibrating in the case of a GoPro style adapter. I am not as concerned about taillights like the Hotshot or Superflash or even the Varia. Switching to Acrylic which is only available in black, white and translucent might be the answer to the strength but the cost doubles moving from nylon. Another minor advantage to Acrylic is that it is a very smooth finish and not the fuzzy finish of the black nylon.

For those unfamiliar with how the taillight mounts on the Madone here is a picture


In order to use my adapters you have to remove the flexible tab for the Bontrager Flash and replace it with the new alternative ones. The Trek part listed above is only the black plastic piece and not the entire taillight. It is available as a special order from any Trek dealer. Some larger Trek dealers might have one in a spare parts box. An alternative method to acquire this would be from a non-Madone owner that buys a Bontrager Flash tail light as Trek now includes both the rubber strap and Madone mounts.

If anyone here has any opinions I would be happy to entertain them.

UPDATE: Found out the the Flare Tail light mount as well as a matching rear reflector mount comes with the Trek Madone 9 series, so there should be no need to buy the Trek part listed above. Since the bases of both the reflector and the Flare mounts are identical, you can disassemble either to replace it with the piece modeled above. PERFECT!!!! Definetly ordering a couple, quite a few friends waiting for this one.

One question, without being a pain.... Would it be possible to bring the mount up a bit higher? The 'drop' seems quite large and would it not be nicer if it was more compact? Or is it to prevent mounting issues?

The mount was designed this way to allow both landscape and portrait mounting of the Varia without having two different items. The center of the mount is only approximately 30 mm from the saddle mounting surface. The picture makes it look bigger than it really is. The Varia taillight and the Varia Radar do not share similar dimensions. the TL is 92 mm long, while the Radar is only 73 mm, I needed it to fit both in either orientation.

Could we not adjust the length to make two versions? One for the TL and one for the Radar?

Got another request from a Trek Madone 9 owner. Wanted to mount a Cyclic Fly6 on the back using that little bracket so I have been working on this design. Works the same way as the Garmin mount, you must disassemble the reflector bracket and pull it apart then insert this and put the bolt back in while adding an M4 nut on the front side.

I grabbed a Sony camera (HDR-AZ1) after reading of your positive thoughts on the model in a thread somewhere I think in this forum although not positive.

I know you've pointed out in a post somewhere the mounts for it, but I've read 10 pages of this thread and my eyes are going square and glazing over from all the info.

At this stage I'm thinking of mounting it on my handlebars but am a little undecided.

My bike utilises an aluminium Jeff Jones H-bar which so far only mounts my Garmin Edge.

I remember reading of people being less than impressed with Sony's offerings to mount their cameras.

I did spot your pic in this peruse of the thread of a plastic mount to add the wrist live view remote.

Could you make me some recommendations for mounts that would work for my handlebar and perhaps one that would also work for mounting it on my seat post which is 27.2mm.

I've attempted to read this thread a couple of times but end up leaving it confused and my new camera has been sitting unused now for at least a month.

Whats the method/parts needed to mount the camera?

I see for the live view I need a garmin mount with rubber bands. I have that covered.

If you want to handlebar mount the Sony Live-View Remote that is the correct item.

The camera mount is specific to the HDR-AZ1 and requires a M4 x 5 socket head or button head cap screw to secure to the camera. Because of the small size of the camera, Sony went with a different mount screw than a normal tripod socket/screw. But the one you linked to is correct for the HDA-AZ1

If you are seat post mounting the camera, and have a 27.2 seat post, again you linked to the correct item. You will need an M5 thumbscrew and nut to attach the camera to the mount, this is the default hardware used to mount a GoPro, available everywhere in the world. The seat post clamp itself requires two M3 x 15 mm allen head cap screws as well as two M3 nuts, I prefer and suggest that they be nylon insert lock nuts so there is no chance that they will vibrate loose, ever.

All the K-Edge combo mounts can accommodate the camera, as for the Garmin Edge 1000 (I believe it does work if you have the XL version), you will need to ask K-Edge or look at their page linked here: Garmin XL Combo Mount - K-EDGE

You do not need the last piece you linked to if you have a K-Edge Combo mount, you mount your Garmin on the top and the K-Edge already has a GoPro mount on the bottom.

My local BMC dealer was kind enough to allow me to measure up a TimeMachine seat post. The result is now a size and angle specific seat post mount for any Garmin device that uses the quarter-turn mount.

I have an older Felt DA tri bike with a 3.1 aero set post and was looking for a number plate holder. It looks like the Felt 1.1 number plate holder you have available on Shapeways may fit. What are the internal dimensions of your offering?

Felt does not make this 3.1 seat post anymore is why I am asking.

The Felt items I have are based on the U-M 1.1 Aero:Road seatpost and are approximately 20 mm at it's widest point and 41 mm long. Now the number plate holder is a bit more flexible than the GoPro or Garmin mounts so it might be possible that it will work, but since I have never seen a 3.1 Aero Post I could not guarantee it. I had spoken to Felt about a year ago asking if they would send me broken or cut off seatposts so I could measure them for things like these and they declined saying their designs were proprietary. The even went so far as to say that their included reflector mount was good enough for their customers. I have not been back to ask them for anything since. Use this information however you see fit.

If you were willing to part with your seat post for a few days and were willing to ship it to me, I could make up a number plate mount specific to the 3.1 seat post, I would send you back your seat post a few days later. If that is something you wish to consider just PM me here (Shapeways messaging system sucks and I usually try to immediately redirect all inquiries I get there to other messaging systems I actually use).

I'm sorry I cannot be without the seat post for a week or until September so but I can send you diagrams, pictures and dimensions (sounding a little like Alice's Restaurant there) if that will work. But based on my measurements this aero seat post is 18mm wide at its widest and goes from 47mm depth (long?) up to 49mm in depth.

Maybe you already have something that will work and I'm just not seeing it.

Received permission to post this picture here. It is a Cervelo S3 with the direct seatpost Garmin Varia mount and the Varia mounted. It is a beautiful bike and great image too.

@WheresWaldo, I would love if you could make a 2016 Trek Madone rear mount for a GoPro. It would be perfect if the rear mount was the same as the flare tail light mount, only the mount had a GoPro connector instead of the connector for the flare light. Does this idea peak your interest at all?
