Health Issues Cause Unexpected Problems.

My recent heart issue, more specifically the meds, cause me unexpected problems.

My monthly mileage has dropped from a normal of 1,000 miles a month to lucky to get 400.

I am almost certain it is the Beta Blockers that have caused low energy and stamina. Sure doesn't take much to tire me out now..... My heart just won't kick up the beat..... what used to be 40 miles every day, has turned into lucky to get 20 three of four times a week....

I'm trying, but it just doesn't seem to be getting any better. When I'm sitting, doing basically nothing, nothing is different. Only during physical exercise. Even washing the car, or mowing the lawn, wears me out.

Yeah, I go to tooooo many doctors regularly )really, too much!)

I'm 69, and getting old ain't helping either!

This sucks!

Man, I do sympathize with you. I am 70 and don't have the energy I used to have. I control my BP with Losaratan and riding. No beta blockers. I refused. Beta blocker lowers max HR and force of contraction. If you ride enough over a long period of time there will be other changes in your aerobic system that can compensate. Increased red blood cell count and more stroke volume. It will take a new training regime to gradually get back there. You will have to slow down for some time as you get your distance back up.

You should check your blood pressure both on ride days and non ride days. If your BP is very low on ride days your dose may need adjusting. Work with your cardio guy. There may be a happy medium combining more than one drug. Maybe a beta blocker in lower dose combined with an ace inhibitor (that does not lower HR) may work better for you.

How about this, Stop counting miles completely,,stop competing with yourself completely..
Get a recumbent, Go out and ride it,,,,, No goals to meet no hurdle to reach for, Just ride untill you get tired.

Oh and stop celebrating birthdays, I stopped, They are a countdown. Let me check my Licence,,hold on,,,,,
Yep It's says I'm 56,, funny I don't feel 56,, I feel 30 with some aches n pains to remind me of all the crazy stuff I did back In the day....

I use Strava on my Saturday rides just to see where I went and how fast I was,, ok ok and how far,,
I also ride during the week, not as hard or far and I don't log it, ever,,
I just ride for the simple pleasure of it...

My Recumbent Is so comfortable I often rest while sitting on it,,no need to get off, Yep Its that comfy.
Oh yeah and chasing Roadies is fun btw

Yep, cardiac meds can be hard on performance. I was on statins and a beta blocker, as well as my anticoagulants, following my two heart attacks a year apart. The beta blocker went first as it caused me to have dizzy spells when standing up too quickly or lifting anything heavy (I'm a paramedic so that wouldn't fly). Over time I found that the statins caused cognitive issues as well as weakness and muscle loss. The pain wasn't bad compared to many of the stories your hear, but I just felt "OLD". My lipid numbers were excellent (according to my cardiologist) but I felt like crap mentally and physically, to the point that I thought I'd have to quit my job. Over about 18 months I gained 25 pounds and started showing signs of depression.

After trying different meds, doses and dosing regimens without improvement, the statins went by the wayside as well in favor of Niacin. I almost immediately felt better both mentally and physically. My memory and focus improved and I started to gain stamina and put on some of the muscle I lost. In six months the added 25 pounds are gone and my physical performance is back to pre-heart attack levels and improving. My lipid numbers aren't great but my HDL is good and my LDL and triglycerides are borderline (compared to a lifetime of being quite high).

Agree on the beta blockers no energy struggle everytime I try to ride or do any physical activity.

Yup. My GP referred me to a cardiologist for low energy. Cardio guy cut my beta blocker in half, and my energy level went WAY up.
