Diabetes is not good. I have a friend who had a mountaineering accident last year. Due to odd fallout from the accident, he's lost 50 lbs. He had diabetes before the accident. 6' and down to 148 lbs. now. His diabetes doc says he doesn't have it anymore. Interesting, eh? I'd never heard of a Type 2 going clear.
This result had been not only hypothesized among biochemists/cell biologists since at least the early 1980's, it was considered so likely amongst those in the field that no one even bothered to prove it would happen. Odd huh? Those bright enough to understand the system found the problem too simple and boring to explore. Anyway, about five years ago some folks began publishing that not only can weight loss reverse diabetes, just a few weeks of very low caloric intake (300-500 calories per day, IIRC) can reverse the early stages.

If you understand the mechanism of cell membrane-based receptors and their ligands, it's all pretty obvious. If not, it's unconnected spots.

This is borderline political, but in the interest of maybe saving someone's sight, I hope I'm excused. I believe Indiana is one of those states that refused the Medicaid expansion under the ACA. If the OP would simply high-tail it to a nearby state that didn't refuse to expand its Medicaid program to low-income adults. he may find that the surgery he needs will be fully paid for once he signs up.

Yes, moving isn't free. Do you have any relatives or good friends in such a state who will help?

Other than that, I've got nothing but a hollow feeling because of our unconscionable medical system and what it does, and doesn't, do. Best of luck finding what you need.

Reminds me of the song by Curtis Mayfield. In it there is talk about "baggage".

People get ready, there's a train a comin'
You don't need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith, to hear the diesels hummin'
Don't need no ticket, you just thank the Lord

So people get ready, for the train to Jordan
Picking up passengers coast to coast
Faith is the key, open the doors and board 'em
There's hope for all, among those loved the most

There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner
Whom would hurt all mankind, just to save his own, believe me now
Have pity on those whose chances grow thinner
For there is no hiding place, against the kingdom's throne

So people get ready there's a train a comin'
You don't need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith, to hear the diesels hummin'
Don't need no ticket, you just thank the Lord

Im sorry for your situation. Im 62 here. Only advice I can give you (from personal experience) stay thin, work and workout hard but rest hard as well. My wife also suffers from diabetes but a low carb diet has helped her tremendously and even I have dropped pounds just supporting her diet. A combination of cycling, diet and God's will has helped my health so far.
Financially... I know it's tough keeping insurance, I guess I should not complain about my job.
Good luck to you my friend, God bless.

Excellent thoughts all, its just this faith that has seen me through the decade of surgeries, having some tough IV chemo for MRSA twice and kidney failure, twice. It is giving me the guidance to manage my Parkinson's Disease symptoms now.

Great Curtis Mayfield reference and tune, his song lyrics have always touched a place deep inside.

Total knee replacement 4 months ago, scheduled for cervical fusion of c5-C7 in June, and dealing with an inner ear problem in right ear. 54 years old and all my parts are starting to wear out! But Im still pushing forward- getting on the bike, lifting weights and eating right. All the new parts and healthy habits are starting to pay off though, feeling better and getting stronger!

My medicine cabinet has expanded over the years to the point that I've installed extra shelf space in several areas of the bath.

On the topic of medical procedures, my friend Tom, a man I've known and worked with on and off for 30 years or more, has just had heart surgery. The operation was one where they crack your chest open like a lobster. He is a great walker and generally in good physical condition covering many miles daily. I frequently encounter him on the bike path, me riding, him walking and we chat for a mile or two as I walk the bike. He just sent me an e-mail that he was discharged from the hospital nursing home after a mere 10 days. The follows with the experience of others on this forum that good physical condition speeds recovery. So no matter what, keep moving forward as long as possible for the best quality of life.

Approaching 80. Fighting with family-inherited glaucoma, shunt in right eye, left eye under Rx. Allergic to just about every eye medication preservative ever made, so am on non-preservative drops ($$). Two IOLs for cataracts. Right side of mouth and face have no feeling due to past necessary intensive gamma knife surgery. AFib conquered 12 years ago, but am seeing cardiologist in a couple of weeks for first time in 12 years due to a blip in my EEG last annual physical.

OTOH, BP is 113/77, can do 40 pushups, a few pullups and chinups. body dips and the like. Have good flexibility due to a great stretching program. Use TRX regularly. Walk a couple of miles daily, swim and bicycle.

I'm glad to be able to do all I can. ALL - repeat ALL of my high school buddies are dead.

52 isn't old. I'm sorry to hear about the cataracts at your age. My cataract surgery was mostly covered by Medicare and supplementary coverage. I could go on about medical costs and coverage, but someone will cry "Political", and the thread will be closed.
