Ft. Dix, NJ Basic
Ft. Leonardwood, MO Engineering
Ft. Benning, Ga Benning School for Boys - 2LT
Fort Devens, MA
Blue Lancer Valley, just below the DMZ S Korea 1Lt
Early out 10 1971 as cut backs began in Vietnam.
When they said I was going to Korea I asked "Where the hell is that." We all trained for and expected to end up running an infantry platoon in Nam. I was lucky and always felt bad about going there when almost everyong else in my OCS class went to Nam.

I'm not a veteran yet, hec I'm still a youngen at 44. Have been in the USAF since 1984 and will be fully retired on 04 Feb 2010 with 26 years in. I have been working/dealing in aircraft maintenance in one form or another the entire time. Do you guys watch Dirty Jobs on the Discovery channel? How about the "Tank rats" episode? If so thats my main Air Force job "Aircraft Fuel Systems repair" is the official title. I'm currently hanging out in the desert and I'm the boss of my shift so I don't spend to much time crawing around the inside of fuel tanks. To all that have served before me you also have a heart felt thanks for all you have done!!

USNR 1966 - 1973. Active 1969-71
USS Princeton and Mare Island, CA.
I had to join the reserves in college. I attended U.C. Santa Cruz (the first class). The Selective Service didn't know what to do with the pass/fail grading system so they made all the sophomore boys 1-A. I got my degree (deferments) then was off.

Drafted Jan 1964. Basic Tng, AIT, Heavy Weapons Ft Polk, LA then transferred to a Medical Lab as a Lab technician to Ft Baker, CA (North end of the Golden Gate Bridge)...go figure! Active duty ended Jan 1966 with reserves ending in 1972. Amazing experience. I would like to see mandatory service of some kind for all youth in this wonderful country be it the military or some social or community service. This is speaking as one who just attended the graduation of my kids from CU Boulder, CO.
A broadening experience to give everyone the feeling of community. In the service I got out of my comfortable middle class circle and met individuals of all sorts of back grounds...in the Jim Crow South no less!!!!! Wouldn't trade the experience for anything...Did lose a lot of the friends who became ground pounders from the AIT Advanced Infantry Training group in Viet Nam sorry to say.

One son currently in the Navy. Naturally I am always thinking about our men and women currently in harms way. Kids, all of them, but weren't we all?

Heck, no, not during Vietnam. Served 2 years of Alternative Service (conscientious objector) as a nursing assistant in a hospital in Chicago.

I'll bet there's a tremendous story behind that statement.
I didn't serve, having turned 18 in 1974 when the military was a different place than it is now. I have the greatest respect for those of you who did, and I thank D-Fox for starting this thread.
