Fortunately, I avoided Vietnam with a student deferment, followed by a lucky top-of-the-last third (#245) birthday lottery draw. I believe we should rely ever more heavily on our technology to fight terrorists and rogue states, and I strongly oppose mandatory military conscription. (Yes, my sons are currently at prime draft ages, 23 and 19. The elder one is pursuing a PhD in plasma physics and superconductor engineering, in preparation for a career in nuclear fusion research and development. He can make a far greater contribution there than anywhere in the military.) I would support some sort of universal service only if it provided individuals a very wide choice of assignments.
