I haven't been riding much lately; life getting in the way. Last week my wife had minor surgery (she's doing well in her recovery). This past Tuesday morning our dog of 14 years passed away. It was relatively peaceful but he truly was the best dog and I miss him terribly.
I took Tuesday off from work and spent part of the day rebuilding the front wheel on my fixed gear bike. I got a wheelset from a friend who was selling off bike stuff when he moved to a beach house on the gulf to retire. The rear wheel was perfect but the front wheel was radial laced and I use my front brake quite a bit; it didn't work well with the radial lacing and things started to loosen up. So Tuesday I relaced it with new spokes in a 3-cross pattern. I think it came out well; I took it out for a 12 mile shakedown ride tonight and it felt great. Because the wheal was borked I hadn't ridden my fixie in almost a year. It was marvelous to ride fixed again. |
Always grateful to post this thread
Better than workin is gravelin
Almost 2500’ elevation gain in first half of miles. Perfect weather. ~20 MI up, then down the same, maybe a couple more. But I didn't get turned around or such. Know what I mean?.....Not on home turf. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...974da0797.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...eeb680e3b.jpeg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b2ecb08c1.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...36028a27f.jpeg |
Last week I decided to check out a well maintained road that I thought might be a private drive and it turned out to be an access road for a cell tower. It was a little over 2 miles long and with a few adjustments to my regular route I now have a nice one of 30 miles. So for the last week I've been doing 30 instead of my usual 25 and it dawned on me today that the first 25 has gotten much easier. Pics coming.

Just got home from a birthday ride of 15 miles.
Wish I could still ride my age number, but 76 miles is well beyond my abilities anymore. :o |
Yep.
Rode 30.6 miles today in 2 hrs 9 min. Did one stop. Mostly flat with some rollers. Listening to college football on my phone. |
Did 41 miles today on an “organized” ride. First SAG was not advertised well since one would need to leave the route and ride into town (not sure how I was supposed to know that since there were no signs) and missed it. That would have been about 12 miles in. My partner and I were looking for some fuel since we missed the SAG and didn’t take snacks with us. So, stopped at a restaurant and enjoyed lunch together to eliminate the lightheadedness.
The 2nd SAG was back in town since you loop around a lake and it was a “combo” SAG. The first and 2nd SAG were the same SAG 😂. The problem was, the location was a bit of a mystery, so we missed it the 2nd time around as well. Stopped at a C-Store and picked up some M&M’s since we still had about 12-14 miles to go. 35 miles in, we came across the 3rd SAG which was located on the route and very visible. Couldn’t miss it. I asked where the other SAG was and was told you had to turn off the route and it was somewhere near the Farmer’s Market in the small town. 🤷🏻♂️ Oh well, I learned a valuable lesson today……bring snacks for fuel in case the expected SAGs are difficult to find. All in all, a beautiful day for the ride and enjoyed the countryside. |
50+ miles getting to the Atlanta SOPO co op and back. Stopped at CHARM recycle center on the way.

Yes. 30 miles after a short lay off.

Instead of my regular 16 mile before church ride on the back roads, I took a 25 mile spin along the MUP, rode around downtown and explored one of the older neighborhoods in town.

This is about 3.5 miles from the house. I didn't climb it today- had other things in mind. https://i.imgur.com/KdUGuG7.jpg https://i.imgur.com/lHSdZBu.jpg New to me bike path that cuts along the southern edge of the airport and leads to: https://i.imgur.com/WZCjKJ3.jpg 17 Wing Air Force base. https://i.imgur.com/bUC6Ro9.jpg Bit of an outdoor aircraft museum here. This F-86 Sabre has the wrong warning message on it's nose- "Be-ware Intake". Never mind the air intake- the real danger is from the six .50 cal. BMG's in the nose of the aircraft.:D https://i.imgur.com/8Kdrhhd.jpg One more pedestalled plane. Not sure what this one is- I forgot to take note of the signage. About a 17 mile or so loop for me today after being off the bike for 4 days after taking a spill on the MTB. Glad I did the ride- this warm stuff ain't gonna last much longer. -D.S. |

That looks like a great place to ride!

22 interesting and fun fixed gear miles this evening. I rode with the Night Riders for the first time in quite a long time. They usually do two refreshment stops but tonight being a holiday weekend, three were planned. I checked the weather and it looked like small showers in the area so I decided to go for it. A quarter mile from the meetup point, the skies opened up and I ducked under a covered loading dock. I spent several minutes with Homeless Howard who had his stuff under the roof to keep it out of the rain.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3bb765a22a.jpg Finally the rain let up and I got there just as the group was ready to leave. We rode through light sprinkles and wet streets for a few miles, then they dried out. It hadn't rained further south. Our first stop was a "hobo stop" at a local park. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6bfec5b86f.jpg We rode on with no further rain to our second stop, a local bar called Rogers Roundhouse that backs up to a rail yard. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0aad8b2df7.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...8e9d1ead5a.jpg Soon after we arrived the rain started again, and was persistent this time. Finally it let up enough to go to the third stop, but it looked like even more showers were moving in so I just sprinted home in light sprinkles from there. As I got to my street it increased to a more persistent drizzle. It looked like heavier rain was moving in but now as I check the radar it seems to have magically evaporated. I guess I could have done the third stop after all. |
what a bad time I've had to twist my leg.

40km today. My last post here mentioned I had done 65km, mostly in pouring rain. As luck would have it, I caught a cold, which kept me indoors for most of the week. It was just as well, it rained every day. But today it was sunny, and though I woke up with a cough and a headache, I felt much better after the ride.
This week I’ll be upgrading the fork and brakes on my bike, and hope to put one some miles and see how it all works. |
Sciatic pain or something or other this morning after yesterday's ride. So a short spin to the duck pond is all I want.

I did get out and ride a 20.5 mile ride. The weather was very nice this morning with the temp at 60 f degrees and mostly blue skies. I stopped at a my friend's house who sells vegetables grown in her garden and was able to get yellow cherry tomatoes. A very pleasant ride and a good start to September.

Back on Thursday, I did a thing ... sea-to-summit ... Hilo to Maunakea on the Island of Hawai'i.
This is 13,786 ft of climbing, with basically zero respite from the climb. The 42 miles took me 9 hours, including nearly an hour at the Visitor Information Center at 9,200 ft. The rangers and staff at Visitor Information Center are amazing and supportive ... and they will be sure you know the challenge you're about to attempt. As a very experienced ultra endurance athlete, this challenge truly starts as you turn up the Mauna Kea Access Rd! The summit of Maunakea is a sacred place and I am in awe of the power of this place as well as the Hawaiian people that have, and continue to, hike/climbed here. And big thanks to Bikeworks Beach and Sports in Waikōloa Beach for help with replacing some needed nutrition after I bailed out of an attempt earlier in our visit when Hone winds arrived earlier than we expected. Starting fresh and full of hope! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c1870c8ecb.jpg This is no lie, the oxygen is 43% less at the summit! https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1ae0c43797.jpg I knew I'd walk, and walk I did!! 18% grades at altitude are MEAN!! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...551ad2abe1.jpg The road over 9,200 turns to gravel, and gravel is a VERY generous term for these road conditions ... it's beach sand conditions peppered with boulders. There was a lot of walking here! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...06acf2d23f.jpg I'm totally gassed but made it! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...754473a4ab.jpg A selfie with Frau Toad, the most amazing support person ... and support in every possible meaning of the word. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2d4fb790d9.jpg Because of Hurricane Hone, my ride was tried (and failed), and pushed back to our last day on Hawai'i ... so there was no celebration, it was straight to the Kona airport to pack my bike and tons of crap. I had to laugh at our sh..show!! We had a few security staffers keeping an eye on us, the best was a bike cop that stopped to talk and share his ride on the gravel route from Waimea to the Visitor Information Center, so cool!! (I'm pointing to my NA beer ) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6660566e03.jpg |
Yep. Rode a 22.5 mile training ride in just under 90 min with 450 ft of climb.

Nothing major today- we had a craving for BLT's, so a quick trip to find tomatoes and lettuce on Labor Day turned into almost a 5 mile loop.
Did find a store open, and the home-made BLT's were something else! -D.S. |
First ride of the month yesterday. Beautiful late summer weather in the Boston area with low humidity and low 70s for the high temp. It felt great to be out there noodling around.

Cut back to 15 miles this morning. Since my surgeries I think I may have been premature going 18 and 20+ so early in recovery. I found after 18 last week I felt lousy the rest of the day. Before the new knees I was going 25-30, 2 to 3 times a week. My plan is to get a good baseline of 15 miles or so and work on my pacing as well. Getting back to 25-30 may take more time than I thought. It’s been over 30 years since I had not done any type of exercise for close to 8 months and at close to 73 regaining fitness may be more challenging than I thought. Any advice is appreciated.

Usual Tuesday lunch with bf and grocery run that usually involves two stops. Planned on three, today, to include one store that rarely has any good sales. So I was bags only and did not take trailer with cooler. So, ofc, there was 11 family sized containers of tortellini on discount. Stuffed the bags with dumplings and ice bottles for the 10 mile ride home. Found a trio of clean, unscratched dining chairs in the adjoining neighborhood to mine. An awesome trip and I'll get to the other grocery stores tomorrow.
