Snuck in a quick ride before sunset and the end of the year.https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5f4ebb61e9.jpg

Got in 32 miles today to end the year with 5,120, which is up quite a bit from the ~3500 last year. Some of that due to having very favorable weather early in the year. Probably rode more in January this year than any other.

It all resets to zero tomorrow. I don't really set goals other than to keep riding, keep working on hills, which I suck at. Miles will typically depend on weather, how many vacations we take, how often we watch the grandkids, etc. Happy New Year!

I waited for the local's street fireworks to end then headed out at 2:02AM but by that time a super wicked fog had settled in. At times only 100' in front was sight distance so SLOW GOING. Didn't help when rabbits did their dashing across the street only a few feet away so by the end of my 26.62 mile ride I had frazzled nerves and a headache.

I titled my STRAVA ride -- "Horrendous Fog for Psycho Johnny's Inaugural *INSIDE OUT* New Year's Day Bike Ride"

https://www.strava.com/activities/13236910610

note -- The *INSIDE OUT* refers to every piece of clothing including gloves being worn *INSIDE OUT*. The *Inaugural* refers to this type of New Year's Day ride being the FIRST of hopefully many more to follow since my Prostate Cancer has returned and hopefully will not advance to becoming Metastasized from my Gleason 10 diagnosis which then usually ends in a PCa painful death.

Started the year with a late afternoon ride, over the ridge to see if they had done any more work on the alleged bridge construction that blocks my favorite way out of town. I think they've done one day's work since the beginning of August -- nothing visible in the last three months.

Rode hard enough to support more torso weight through pedaling instead of leaning on the bum wrist. That worked well until I relaxed and hit an almost invisible pit -- ouch! 11.4 mph average speed? That was because of the two climbs on my 15 mile route!

First ride of the New Year. 12 miles on the bike trainer while it snowed 3" here today.

OldTryGuy 01-02-25 09:10 PM

Found myself heading out at a very rare ride departure time of 12:53PM today thanks to an existing cloudy sky with mild winds and cool temperatures allowing a slow recumbent ride on the surrounding labyrinth of roads stretching no farther than 1.1 miles as the crow fly's from my driveway. After an elapsed time of 2:40:43 I was back home having completed 2:40:07 of easy-peasy pedaling for 34.43 miles with that 36 seconds of time difference due to stopping to pick up 5 dimes making for a profitable and healthy ride.

Good on the 12 miles CB!

Maybe not so much on the snow bit, but it's January so not unexpected now izzit? Naught up this way, yesterday actually had more fuzzy sunshine than the last week or more.

Stick with the trainer! I know I will be too....

Its not my favorite. I was watching the college football playoff while doing it. I usually watch sports of some sort. I also use a stationary bike we have in our little gym at work. Snow I can live with, its the bitter bitter cold we are now starting a stretch of, with no days above 30 degrees F for an extended period and several times it will be around 0 (-18 C) or below if you factor in wind that I am not fond of. Truly the dog days of Winter. I have Winter gear, but its pretty rough when below 32 F (0 C)

Yeah, that Polar Vortex is building up a high that'll push Arctic Air well into the southern states this week, maybe next week too. Doesn't look like we're gonna see any real extremes just yet but the duration of seasonably chilly air isn't gonna let up before mid-month:

Dang... Winter, again.

Glad I have my trainer. No, it's not my favorite either but compared to sitting around on my duff it offers an alternative endeavor.

I need to re-mount a toilet too I think may have been leaking a bit at the flange so I have something else to work on besides trainering. Good 'inside' work on what maybe the sunniest weekend 3-days in quite some time here.

I rode my trainer for the first one-hour segment today. My initial ride on the trainer was wednesday, when I rode 20 minutes. I really thought it was going to be intolerably bhoring, from what some people said, but I liked it! I am not used to keeping up a steady cadence, but I am glad that this is the way a trainer works, because I am training for an event and want to put in my best effort. M-W-F I will do one hour at moderate pace for the first week. On monday, I think I will use the pacer on my watch to keep my cadence more accurate. I won't have a heart-rate monitor till mid-month. I don't know why I never thought of buying a trainer before.

Cold here in Southern New England for the next 10 days or so indoors it is. Did 12 miles on a Greg Lemond indoor trainer. No one in my gym uses this trainer and I find it just right for my needs. Of course my gym was pretty busy today, not surprising. Should even out in a couple of weeks.

Don't beat yourself up, you're human. Remember that everything comes to us with a 'first time'.

I never, ever expected I'd be using a trainer either, though there was a time about half a century ago that I thought maybe buying a set of rollers might be useful.

That never happened, but the trainer has and I'm loving it.

pepperbelly 01-03-25 06:36 PM

When using a trainer indoors do y’all put a towel down to keep chain lube off the carpet?

Yep, there is no coasting on a trainer

So the Wahoo arrived today, the one that uses its own variable cog instead of a cassette. I quickly put it together - the instructions are super clear - but the little remote cog shifter had a dead battery, and the game style controllers was also missing.

Nice instructions
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...cbb0e84b6f.png
Even supports the rare ETRTO 451 tire size of the Bike Friday Pocket Rocket

Overall, a mix of good and not so good.

But I was excited to try Zwift, so with just one gear (felt fairly tall, like 52x19) and Zwift installed on my phone, I endeavored a spin. The screen was so small (not to self; use laptop or something next time) that I couldn't even read the options, I blindly chose one and started.

And then it started going uphill and * quickly crashed and burned.

I'm gonna have to get a battery for the shifter clicky thing and a bigger screen but still, it was kind of fun.

Getting kind of hard to see dimes from my 22" road bike. I can still see quarters at speed, and will stop for them. That road change adds up quickly- especially in the snow free months.
It all helps the coffee and laundry funds. :D

Old yoga mat under trainer, concrete floor under mat.

Interesting that a CORE relies on a QR. I got my Kickr SNAP about a year ago, wouldn't work with the 120OLD QR on my MotoGR w/o resorting to having a friend make me a couple of custom 'bushings'. Through axle's fine, as long as it one of the three from the kit they supply for a few $$ more.

Funny... I did the same thing a week ago attempting an FTP test in Rouvy.

From what I'm getting out of another thread currently active here there's more than one way to derive an FTP number w/o the punishment of the test protocols. (Scroll down to post #29 for a tie-in to what you've described JMF.)

Rode around the Tucson Loop, 55 mostly flat miles. I rode the first leg with a group of five that turned around at the 20 mile mark, but I felt like going on. A younger guy on a single speed caught up with us, and decided to pace with us. When he took the lead, our pace increased from 20 to 24 mph (his top cadence)! That's too fast for a MUP, but it was very early in a rural area of town with great visibility, and everyone was safe at road crossings.

I usually avoid The Loop on busy weekends, but it's typically okay in the morning (we started at sunrise). Later on, on my solo leg, I saw the reason why I avoid it. A cyclist passed me without warning, went to pass a pedestrian in front of us who looked a little unstable, then almost hit the pedestrian when the pedestrian veered across the path. He scolded the poor old guy, who had the right-of-way. But when he passed the next group of walkers he did use a bell. Maybe a lesson was learned.

Another trainer down. 45 minutes watch Belgian Cyclocross. I keep reminding myself these are the key to a good road season in 2025.

Finally I can contribute here. I have been in Michigan since Christmas eve and got back here yesterday. I got out late this afternoon and rode for 10 miles for errands that needed to be done. The weather was very pleasant for riding.
