We have leaves on our trails but they are dropping due to a drought and the heat. We haven’t had any rain since September 25th and that wasn’t much. Could some if y’all up north leave the gate open so we can get some cooler weather?😄 |
Did my usual 40 miles today. It was beautiful out despite 25mph winds out of the north. Mushroom season is upon us and the Matsutaki's and King Boletus are everywhere. The Kings are good with your favorite salad dressing as a dip, the Matsi's need to be used in a dish like split pea soup. Now I've made myself hungry.

About 21 miles. Didn't keep exact track of the running around/pick-up stuff in the morning.
Then back out to fish again. https://i.imgur.com/0uQDXxz.jpg Plane was noisy- first time I ever heard flaps engage from the ground. Definite clank. https://i.imgur.com/14U8kxF.jpg There's a view of the river at sunset, looking east. Getting out was a bit of a grind with the stiff head winds. I'll usually stop and get a coffee when legs start getting over-tight. -D.S. |

Swinging Limb Road
Today I went for a ride to Swinging Limb Road in West Tennessee.
According to legend a man was hanged from a tree on this road , probably in the 1800s. I had to ride on a state 2 lane for 4 miles to get to it. The road is gravel, the surroundings scenic, and quiet. All in all I rode 12.8 miles, with lots of hills to climb. miles. This 67 year old is ready for a nap. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5f7adaec40.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...021b6ea5c3.jpg N.W Tennessee https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...bb99c8e27b.jpg The beginning of gravel. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4513a609d0.jpg Swinging limb rd. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9fe8fdd853.jpg Taking a break for a climb https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...fb3f3472bb.jpg Another break |
I got the Crescent out this afternoon for a shortie.

The breakfast ride was 27 miles Saturday morning. Perfectly gorgeous weather: mid-60s at the start, up to the 70s during the ride. Anytime there was a headwind it just felt like a refreshing breeze. This is the group posing in front of a highly Halloweened house in my neighborhood.

15 miles in the country today in 1:07. Contemplating existential dread. |
12 miles today. Test rode the old MTB to make sure it'll be ready see snow.
Replaced the cracked sidewalls rear tire on it first. https://i.imgur.com/uiPRIoU.jpg Along the river trail by the Assiniboine R. here. About 46-47 F when I took this frame. Wind has a bit of a bite to it though, and a lot of people were bundled up. https://i.imgur.com/tAeeNyM.jpg Old cantilever rail bridge over the Red R. This one is the CNR main line through town, and is still in use. I don't think it opens any more- the weights have been removed from it. https://i.imgur.com/BMfdZRZ.jpg Along the east side of the Red R. trail in old St. Boniface. Sculpture is titled "Arms of Love". https://i.imgur.com/EAUPDfD.jpg Assiniboine R. trail again, this time on the way home. -D.S. |
Two different rides on Sunday, both on my 1983 Raleigh Marathon townie conversion (with a 2-speed kickback hub):
8 miles round trip to and from the Bills Backers bar (Bills won again :D ) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9dee3e29e4.jpg Our table at Buffalo Bros https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...39ba128d12.jpg My bike out back behind Buffalo Bros And then I did the Night Riders pub crawl ride for 23 miles https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e01a688bfc.jpg At the Rusty Nickel https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...319aba2977.jpg Riding our bikes. At night. |
Yesterday I volunteered at a mechanics tent at the Tucson's Cyclovia event. I help out at the BICAS coop whenever I can. Most of my co-workers are a third my age, are struggling financially or personally, and are in a completely different culture than I. But bicycles bring us together and they tolerate the old guy, a recovering engineer who can adjust a threaded headset, quill stem, and cantilever brakes. In return I'm learning hydraulic disc brakes and press fit bottom brackets in carbon fiber frames. Yesterday was mostly fixing flats, adjusting brakes, and tightening loose things.
The Cyclovia route passes through the historic barrios of South Tucson, a way more interesting place than where I live. It's 12 miles and a world away. My bike ride there passes through the U of A campus, a highlight on many of my rides. It also passes the Tucson Botanical Gardens. I bought a membership there so I can use it as a water/restroom/picnic/shade break. It was nice yesterday in the 99 degree heat. |
Rode to the local park on a lovely fall day to make some coffee...
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7b2f802382.jpg It was a chance to play with my new drone. |

Another 16 miles today~ back to Sturgeon creek's mouth to fish.
https://i.imgur.com/yDB9jVJ.jpg Not a lot for photo's. Did manage to quick snap this duck right at sunset. Temperature sure dropped fast with the sunset. I could see my breath by the time I left for home. There won't be a lot more of these fishing excursions left for open water. Freeze-up is going to start crowding in with-in the next couple of weeks- likely less... -D.S. |

Managed 13+ miles late this morning on my SL-7 out a hilly country road then back into town to have some break in the 26 mph gusts blowing here today! It's close to 77°F right now, predicted to hit or pass 80° with the winds from the south been blowing for a couple days.
Strava says 'Good Job!' getting 712' elevation into those 13.54 miles. I know I could feel it in my legs with the wind in my face.... May very well be the last outdoor miles I get to ride this year, but then Mother Nature can surprise us so maybe if we see a warm(ish) day before Turkey Day I'll be out once again! |

Something to think about, anyways.;) I do want to keep my legs up to condition this winter, and definitely plan on doing more riding. -D.S. |
A quick 15 miles on my local path. Knees and back told me that was enough today, although I did push the speed up a bit, probably why the shorter but good workout. Enjoy the day all!
