12 miles today. Great day to ride, though there were some wind gust that gave me trouble. Fun day anyway.

Got a late start and the temp was almost 90° but this time of year the sun isn’t as bad as in summer.
One 6 mile loop around the lake. I felt good enough at the end I may do 2 tomorrow. If ride goes as planned, 6 loops for 6.66 miles on Oct. 6th |

Good plan. The mup around the lake is closed after dark and not really safe.

From yesterday: I have been extending the miles recently. I rode 23 miles today, third day with over 20 for three consecutive days, total 80 miles. In the past 16 months, since a bike crash, It's been rare that got 80 miles in a week. I stayed in pretty good condition with walking and exercising with light weight dumbbells. My right arm and new replacement shoulder need some time and for strength to return.

I had a mini reunion with my college classmates\...we all moved west to SF. one other had a work issue, so couldn't make it. but we all started our MTB days in Marin. We are not from the early MTB days, but started on rigid RockHoppers and Treks. Now, in our 60's era we did about 13 miles starting from Ross and around the Lake trails. some tough climbs on loose rocky trails. one of us had an eBike but 2 did not. we were in sync regardless. Long term friendships work that way.

Got out for a bit this afternoon. Sunny & what I thought was a modest breeze that turned into a gale in my face once I turned back for home. Tried out using Ride with GPS over Strava, worked well enough though I forgot to pair my Trackr HRM before I left so lost that data....
While I was heading westbound out of town a hitchhiking bee somehow couldn't escape my helmet before it stung me. What I felt at first was a minor enough 'stab' that soon grew painful enough I realized what had happened, stopped to remove helmet to release the vagrant but it was gone by then. The lump persists. I live in New England, and the weather is turning cold. I have been retired for ten years so when the time changes, loss of daylight will be no issue. I ride 300 miles a week and my medical philosophy is that what I do every day would kill most people if they tried it once. I figured out years ago that there is no amount of alcohol that is good for you. Studies that appear to show that small amounts of booze are better than no booze at all are flawed and rely on confounding evidence and poor reporting. I smoked back in the 70’s but quit in 1976 when I started running. I did weed when I was a lead guitar player in bands but stopped toking in 1974. They tell me I have nodules on my thyroid but so do millions of other people. I have one thyroid marker that is slightly out, but I am asymptomatic. I am almost 80, so something will be there like a window in a 1947 Studebaker that will not roll down.
I have lots of cold weather gear and got these great insulated over boots at the bike shop. I pull my headband over my ears under my helmet. I have three Cygo lites that I bought about 15 years ago. What a great product; hats off to them! I have five long sleeved shirts that I bought in 1994 from Performance. The zippers are gone on two of them, but they are still warm. I have a Gortex rain jacket from the 1994 Performance shopping spree that is warm as toast. Hats off to them too! I have Thinsulate claw gloves that I got years ago, so my hands stay warm. I have a heavy duty cycling jacket I got at the bike shop and sometimes wear a ski vest underneath, I will ride until it snows this year. I do not have a fat-tire bike so when the snow files I will be in the gym most of the day. One-hour upper body workout on Nautilus machines, two hours on treadmill, two hours on seated stationary bike (also have one at home in exercise room), two hours on seated stationary bike at home with backrest at home. I passed an exercise stress test a few years ago. A cardiologist said I exceeded my max heart rate by twenty-five percent. Is that good? He said it was great! The thyroid is a little low functioning, and my cholesterol is climbing, but my research indicates that the Pharmaceutical-Industrial-Complex evidence that statins prevent heart disease is as flawed and the moderate alcohol evidence. I am not a doctor, so take this as you will. I am 5’5 and weigh 130 pounds. I gained four pound last year but lost it in three weeks when I got back on the bike. |
Excellent Ray!!!

Still "smarting" over the PHillies loss. Took a nice afternoon ride to a LL park and decided to do some Target shopping. (I do wish there were more businesses interested in bike racks, but a shopping cart return works well too!)

Priorities
My wife still works but though she haggles about my riding sometimes she accepts what I do. I probably could not ride these miles without her. She does her thing and I don’t complain. She likes to go to faraway places with her sisters and chums a few times a year. I worry about losing her, but nothing is a hundred percent safe. I hope I go first. If not, I found some pictures of my ex-girlfriend-1967 on the web that I never really got over and see that she is divorced. She appears to be handling age well.I could make contact I guess and tell her the same thing I tell my wife: No matter what, shewill always have third place locked up behind my bike and my guitar.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...42b6402cd4.jpg Rode my first century, and rode 175 over 2 days. I would have finished back to back centuries, but my calf had other ideas. Stiffened over lunch and was sore and got worse after aI got back on the bike. |

The wife and I did a 12 mile ride this morning. First ride in about a week.
I've spent the last 4 days and nights in the hospital. I had a blister looking spot on my right knee that turned out to be nocardiosis and it got very bad very fast. I'd never heard of it before. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/healt...es/nocardiosis Over those four days and nights I received around 20 IV bags of antibiotics, so I was non-stop having a drip of ABs. I was finally released from the hospital last night, and was given scrip meds to keep taking for another week or so. I'm feeling pretty decent all in all. My wife is treating the wound with meds and a new bandage several times daily. I also have several oral scrip meds to take during the day. I'm happy to be back to somewhat normal. |
so today was my first ride in quite a while due to a fall that had nothing to do with my bike. I have a wound on my ankle that still isn't quite healed but the doctor told me yesterday I could get out and ride but not to overdo it. So today I went out on my new bike (that I have been wanting to ride since I got it back in August) and only got 1/2 mile in as my front tire was very low and I went home and my bike pump is at my daughter's house so tomorrow I will take my bike to the gas station as they have an air hose.

10km on Thursday. My second ride since by big crash in early September. Prior to that crash, I had ridden more than 6000km in 2025. Yesterday I had a CT scan to see how well my clavicle was healing. The doctor said it was healed enough that I could stop wearing the brace. My final appointment is in 2 weeks, after which the doctor says I should be recovered. The final appointment is one month before Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge Ride, which I signed up for last summer, and paid a rather hefty entrance fee. The ride is only 37km, at an unchallenging pace.

Out & about earlier this AM before what wind is predicted began to blow. Did 18 miles on the wettish roads here'bouts, much of the time with the sun in my eyes. Kept it short(ish) though, I haven't been riding as much as I'd like to have been the last couple weeks, 'cause, you know, stuff that gets in the way.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4778adecbb.jpg 'Sposed to be WINDY tomorrow once the morning clouds burn off, and maybe cooler as well with the change. I might get out again, will see what comes... 'rideable' days in these parts are getting pretty sparse. |
