Before today, my longest ride was about 20 miles. I'm a runner but have been starting to cross-train on the bike because it's a bit easier on the old body. My son runs and rides with me and he's really a cyclist at heart. I also think he wants me to buy his Surly LHT so he can buy one with a bigger frame. Anyway, he planned a 26 mile ride from our home in Kenosha, WI to the Bong State Recreation Area (funny name, huh?). Ended up being a 35 mile ride. The LHT was a great ride, and the Brooks B17 kept it as comfortable as a man could ask for. Who knew?

100.7 miles. I didn't have a planned route but sort of knew where I was going to head to. It turned out to be just a hundred too. 5 hours 49 minutes riding time.
Weather was beautiful started out at 72° and 69% humidity. Starting out early in the morning meant next to zero traffic. All in all a great ride. I stopped three times for drinks and stopped once under a tree to eat a clif bar and have a drink, that was around the 82 mile mark. |
Hardcore, dude, hardcore.
What route do you take, just out of curiosity? |
62 hilly miles today on a club ride. Shameful admission: I walked up an 18-20% climb, the worst of today's hills. Still learning how to climb steep hills on the long wheelbase 'bent. Very slow speed (6mph or less) handling can be an issue. Once at speed, handling is rock steady. Very smooth at 40mph twice today.
Rode twenty miles yesterday with wife/stoker on our tandem. |
My wife joined us for a 19 mile recovery ride today. It was very cool up at 6000' (50s) and a great morning for a ride. 1850' of climbing.

100.22 miles / 6 hours 11 minutes for me, practice for a 200K ride at the end of the month. Hoping to complete the 200K in under 7 hours. Edit, that was yesterday. Nice easy 20 miles this morning. Cheers, Kelly |
Only 25 miles with a temp. of 101° and a heat index of 111°. Ugh.

Great ride today with the club. They tended to stay together today - the ride leaders roped in the rabbits and made them wait for the turtles - except for the last 10 miles when it was every man/women for themselves. 64 miles, good pace, moderate climbs and great weather.
Tomorrow is a rest day, no gym, no bike - just relax. |
Trying to recover from this blasted excruciating pain in my leg which is keeping me from walking. Took muscle relaxants and vicodin all day to se if I could break the pain pattern. I will know tomorrow of any success, although I have been able to walk a bit today, still under some pain. In the meantime, the relaxants and vicodin make one sleepy!! And, I am unable to sleep much at night as I can't seem to find a "no pain" sleep position.
Wife would not let me drive today, which was a good rule, as I am sort of "out of it!" |
I rode yesterday and found a fitting problem. My left knee was hurting. I raised my seat about .75" and will try again tomorrow on my commute. The Saturday ride was the maiden voyage on my 520. 48.45 miles on the odo. Rode to church and back today but that's about 2.2 miles. D'fox I hope you solve the pain problem. God Bless Y'all.

47 miles on a group ride with, by local standards, a hilly route (~2000 feet of climbing). It was hot and humid and the group numbered about 7, as compared to about 30 for the same ride 2 weeks ago. I don't know if it was the heat or if it just wasn't my day, but I felt awful for the first half of the ride. I was aware of my legs during every little climb and even on some of the flats. I actually considered quitting - something I've never done on a group ride - but I soldiered on. The second half felt better, and my spirits improved. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

I rode 44 miles this afternoon with my friend from work. It was only 95 with a 101 heat index for the first couple of hours. Toward the end it seemed to cool off quite a bit, though it was still around 90.

As a matter of fact, yes I did. 31 miles , easy miles to boot. Took it easy just because ...well just because. 98° 33% humidity. I saw lots of deer too.
|
I got out at lunch for a 1 hour ride up on the mountain. I did large gear low cadence hill intervals in Z3/4.

42 miles with my regular Tuesday evening hill climbing club ride. Threatening weather scared away most of the usual riders, so there was just a half dozen from the very fast group and a couple of stragglers, including me. THe fast group on this ride is a bunch of animals with calfs as thick as my thighs. Of course I got dropped at about the 3rd hill, but because there were so few others, I rode the rest of the way alone. It's harder for me to keep the pace up alone, not just because of the absence of drafting possibilities, but also because of the lack of camraderie. THe result was an OK but not impressive average speed- 17.5 MPH. Last week was closer to 19. Oh yeah, and I got rained on some, but not soaked. Anyway, in all it was better than sitting at home and not riding.

I rode about 25 after work in ~95 deg temps - it was like riding your bike in a bowl of soup - hot and wet....
|
Did 55 miles on the San Gabriel River Trail. Warm but not too hot. Mr Beanz dropped me chasing down some sweet young thing. At least when he caught her, he had the decency to keep going and kept his video camera in his pocket.:50:

41.6 miles after a week off the bike due to out of town trip. It was 80 when I started and 89 when I got home with high humidity. Had to quit just after noon today due to weather warning about heat index climbing up to 105. Maybe tomorrow I'll start real early to avoid the heat.

17 miles of misc. errands, that and getting some new small panniners for the "N+1", no joy it's a 2nd bike for the wife, just kidding. She wanted to try commuting to work so we found a used, Mongoose Crosswave 450 women's hybrid on Craig's List. Already had the headlight/tailight mirror, fenders, etc. so with the panniner's she will be set! Since we don't own a car, not a bad idea gettting a "back up" bike, humm, maybe my turn soon! ;)

48 miles this evening with a riding buddy. Within the ride we did a 37 mile long Graveyard Crit Interval in our local training cemetery and averaged 21.7 mph by taking 1 lap pulls. Nice sunny weather with temps in the low 80's and light winds.

Only 17 miles, but the first 8.5 were all uphill, about 2200 feet of gain up Glendora Mountain Road. And it was HOT:50:

Rode to and from work today - 18 miles total. Fairly pleasant this morning but HOT this afternoon. Carrying two bottles of ice/water helps the ride home.

Today was my 22nd day back on the bike. Went 8.5, getting ready for my first 20+ this weekend. Went over 100 on the ODO.
No pain, just sweat, sweat, and more sweat....hot and humid. |
29 miles this evening, 27 yesterday.
Z4 and Z3 respectively. Rode out NW, towards Oswego. The setting sun reflecting off of the pond at Schlapp & Walker roads made the ride. Nothing but the sound of a few cicadas, and my tires on the road, quite relaxing. Second night ride with my shiny new Fenix LD20 lamp, mounted with a Twofish holder. The perfect setup for my needs, simple and effective. With the Fenix up front and a PBSF out back I feel safer riding at night than day. Cheers, Kelly |
