After two nights not riding due to rain I got in 35 miles tonight. It looked like it could have rained when I started but said I need to ride and if it rain it rains, bike is dirty now anyway so it might have washed it a little. At the end the sun started to poke out and the temps were below 80 so it felt good.

I really need to wash it, man it is a mess.

I guess I didn't eat properly yesterday because I didn't have any energy today. Only did 23 miles. :crash:

LAriverRat 08-14-10 12:04 AM

17 miles. Seems like life got in the way, may ride some tomorrow after a friend drops by.

lebleup 08-14-10 04:39 AM

After a long, hard week of work with a bit of travel, I feel whipped. Beat. I always seem to have to force myself to get on the ride. Once I'm started, the spark ignites and I'm doing my all time favorite thing to do. Uh...besides eating.

Beautiful day for a 45 mile ride so that is what I did.
Near the end I saw a guy turn onto the railtrail I take home on and he was a good bit up. He looked back and stood up and went away. I tried my best to catch him but just couldn't. He would open the gap some and I would close it a bit but never really close it more than when he got on the trail. Well after about 5 miles I think he slowed down because I caught him. There were 2 miles left of the trail and he asked how I was doing. I told him I was whipped trying to catch him and he said lets go! So off we went with me drafting and him leading for the last two miles. Cruised at 20-21 the whole way and it was great! At the end he asked where I was going and told him, he was going the opposite direction and off we both went.
He said to join him on the Wednesday night ride, I might just do it.
With chasing him and then drafting him I had my highest avg this month.

46.4 miles today despite late start with temp at 79* and 87* after my ride. Humidity wasn't so bad at 55%.

Shiseiji 08-14-10 04:31 PM

Yep

Stumbled across a No. VA (NOVA) Casual Bicycling Group on the MeetUp listing last night with a ride scheduled for today. Great 22 mi ride with a nice group. We rode from just north of the National Airport to the end of the Capitol Crescent Trail and back. LOL, didn't realize the last seven miles had been all up hill till we started back and didn't really need to pedal!

rdtompki 08-14-10 05:18 PM

46 miles on the tandem with a bit of climbing on a gorgeous Northern California day.

JanMM 08-14-10 06:08 PM

Today - 25 mostly-rural miles not far from home, at 17mph. Saw corn, soybeans, dead possums/raccoons and two dead snakes. Don't see many snakes around here.

Fun mtb ride Saturday, about 35 miles in 5 hours including miles of steep climbs. Everyone said they would like to do it again, so I guess it was a success.

46 miles this AM, half of it in the rain. Had to soft pedal at the end because my friend was not feeling it today so our overall average wasn't very high. Now Im full of BBQ and ready for a nap.

wrafl 08-15-10 01:39 PM

47.4 miles on a gorgeous day, temps in the low 80's with humidity at 42%. Last ride for now until I come back from out of town trip in a week.

JanMM 08-15-10 01:44 PM

Took a hot midday 18 mile ride today. Saw three live! raccoons crossing the road on a wooded, rural stretch. Most of the raccoons I see are resting flattened on the roadway.
More wildlife: One dead skunk not in the middle of the road and 3 turkey vultures overhead.

Allegheny Jet 08-15-10 01:47 PM

40 miles today. The first 10 were warming up over the 10 mile race course then 3 x 10 mile laps in the race. Not a hilly race but it did have 1,400' of elevation gain with one smartassed roller and some long grinds with wind. I attempted to go with 3 breaks that didn't stick and spent the last 4 miles riding 2nd wheel while pulling a teammate who we thought had a good chance for the win. With 600 meters to go another team mate took my place and I just noodled to the finish. Our average for the 30 mile race wa 23.4 mph. Not really fast, but I did a lot of work and have one really big headache right now (maybe it's a 5 beer headache?, 4 hasn't seem to work yet).

kr32 08-15-10 01:53 PM

I did 59 miles this morning starting out at 7am with overcast skies. At the 13 mile point I felt sprinkles. Was not suppose to rain till afternoon, I thought. It stopped sprinkling and I got 31 miles and had a rear flat, bummer. At 37 mile make the skies opened up and at 38 miles Cateye stopped working. Mileage is from RidewithGPS which also told me I did 2100 feet of climbing.
So it rained all the way back and it was miserable, imo anyway. Funny thing was that after two years of riding the roads around here I very seldom see other cyclists on the road, may one or two,I see a lot on the Railtrail I use to get home from a ton of my road rides, and today I saw a lot of other cyclists in this rain, weird. One pair of them were on the side of the road fixing a rear flat too.

I am thinking the Cateye stopped because of it being wet because when I got home I cleaned my bike and used a air hose to dry some stuff and blew air on the cateye and its mounting and it started working right away when I tried it on the bike.

Oh well I made it home all safe.

I beg to differ.

I set out today thinking I'd just do an easy toodle down the rail trail because my legs were really sore from the Boot Camp exercise class my niece talked me into signing up for. (The instructor is lunge & squat crazy, forward lunges, backwards lunges, hopping squats, side ways squats - you'd think from all the biking my legs would not be sore - but *ouch*)
But after a few miles I was feeling good - and getting tired of "on your left" - so it was off the rail trail and on to the back roads, past the orchards & fields, through the centers of a couple of small towns. Great day for a ride, about 80* but lots of clouds, and a bit of a breeze, so it was not too hot. I don't have a computer, but I'm thinking I got about 30 miles in.

MinnMan 08-15-10 04:30 PM

98 miles today (does that count as a century?). The ride did not go as planned. It was a group ride with several mileage options, and I didn't decided for the 100 mile option until the routes diverged at about mile 25. There were 5 bicycles (6 people, one was a tandem) going the long route. At about mile 50, we realized that the ride leader had major tire problems (he didn't have a flat, but a long section of tread on his tire had ripped off). Unfortunately, nobody had a spare tire and so we made our way back to the nearest bike store, which meant backtracking about 12 miles. Somehow, his tire lasted that long (he mentioned that it was Kevlar lined). After getting the tire replaced, we modified our plan so we'd complete near 100 miles in the end, but with a somewhat different route.

There was a very serious west wind all day, about 13 MPH when we started (headed mostly North and East), but around the time we turned around to head mostly south and west, the wind picked up - steady 20 MPH, with gusts above 30 (see the record here: http://bit.ly/bjgemM). We had at miles and miles directly into that hellacious wind. It was exhausting. But my training in the last couple of months seems to have paid off, because the wind wilted me less than my compatriots. I pulled almost the entire second half of the ride.

Oh, and then at the very end, when I was within sight of my car, I got a flat. What a great time to get a flat!

WOW!! I am impressed. Good job.

I WISH! 38.7 miles. I hoping to do a century in October. Gonna put slicks on the ole Supergo.

big john 08-15-10 05:49 PM

Here's another one from yesterday. We got water down there at the sand and in a few miles we were way above it.

I was referencing speed (mph) not miles traveled. See the first graph.

"I need warp speed Scotty"

Had to be a blip or sumptin".
