Only rode a measly ten miles this evening :D after the heat advisory ended at 8pm. Pretty hot and gawdawful humid. You could cut the air with a reciprocating saw.
Really, really appreciate air conditioning after riding on days like today.

I was set on putting in my daily 20 miles, but started to late. It was dark at 15 miles and I had no lights with me. Other than that it was a good ride...

Ranger Dan 07-11-11 10:32 PM

I got in a warm, humid 50 miles today after a late start (11 AM). Overall, a nice ride, but the heat kind of got to me.

I worked from home today and broke up the day with a mid-morning to noon ride, starting in the sunflower and alfalfa fields and ending up hilly. 35.2 miles.

Son came home with c_gallagh and brought his bike. We headed out for another 27.5 bonus miles so he could play on the TT bike. So very fulfilling and satisfying to see your kid develop into a solid cyclist. It's enough that he rides at all -- that alone makes me happy. Everything else is just icing.

Today’s ride:

Good ride with Dick Davidson to the horse farms. Breakfast at Panera Bread then rode through the heat. As we were leaving Panera I got crowded off to the side of the trail, the front wheel caught as I tried to correct and I went down getting a nice road rash scrape on my left knee. The people that crowded me didn’t stop or say I’m sorry, they went as if nothing had happened,

Only 15 miles but I did stop at one of LBS's and bought a new Trek T-900 Recreational Tandem for the wife and I! :D Finally found an affordable tandem that had a "storker" position that was low enough for my most excellent but "very short" legged wife! When she rode MTB's, she had a 14.5 inch frame and that's what the T-900 has, (18.5/14.5) and almost perfect for me as I rode a 19 inch. framed MTB. Since we don't own a car, well be taking the bus to the LBS early on Sat. morning for a "fitting" and then it's adventure time! :)

More great weather as I completed another fast 40 mile ride. We went north, against a 5-10 mph wind but kept the pace at 28 km/hour (19 mph). On the return route we held 45 km/hour for several mile-long sections, with a strengthening wind to aid the speed.

What's with this "only" stuff? :)

Congrats on the tandem.

Heading out in about an hour as it gets cooler

az_cyclist 07-12-11 04:21 PM

12.4 miles this morning before work, @ 19.6 ave

Never stopped raining yesterday so I got rained out. Today is my rest day but I will pick it up again tomorrow, rain or shine. Moving the bike in the spare room tonight just in case it rains tomorrow after work. Riding 20 miles on a trainer isn't as much fun but 20 miles is 20 miles and it's air conditioned.

I took the bike to my favorite park and did a short 9+ mile ride. This park doesn't have too many flat areas so it's up,down,up,down and then over a dam and back.

This is my favorite place in the park. It's near the top of the dam and a perfect place to rest after climbing up the switch-backs:)

Sure it wasn't a long 9+ mile ride? :)

It certainly seemed longer than 9 miles with all the hills:D

11 miles tonight on the Giro before dark, after the heat index dropped to 102! The air temp reached 103 and the heat index 111 this afternoon at one point. Funny, but I didn't feel I was breaking much of a sweat. Glad I waited, even though the ride was short.

JanMM 07-12-11 08:14 PM

Again waited till after 8pm to get out due to heat/humidity and am proud to say that I was able to ride an astounding and incredible ten miles!:D
Just like last night, the air conditioning felt illegally good afterwards.

teachme 07-12-11 08:18 PM

10.5 miles to the river and back.

rgp332 07-12-11 08:20 PM

13.5 miles this evening, after it cooled down to a muggy 90 degrees

LAriverRat 07-13-11 12:20 AM

47 miles, sunny, windy, 79 to 82 degrees. Added 2.3 miles of climbing. Beach was nice. Started back and realized i was cooked and just rolled back at 19 mph avg with a tailwind.

avmech 07-13-11 07:17 AM

Did 8.33 miles yesterday evening. Concentrating on speed/cadence, held 18-19 mph for about half the ride, running 39/14. The good part of it all is yesterday, for the first time, my legs were not mush plus recovery was way shorter. Half the ride (the last half of course) was with a headwind. Not bad for being back on a bike for 2 months after 20 years off.

Last night Grandpa put new tires on my bike and fine tuned the rear derailleur. I woke up expecting a nice ride on my wonderfully tuned bike, but I quickly discovered that the rear brake calipers no longer contact the rim. No big deal, I thought. I used to adjust the brakes and cables all the time. Then I discovered that after 30 years of manipulating tiny widgets in the sweatshop, my hands and fingers no longer have the strength to hold the calipers in place and pull the cable through the nut and tighten it. :( :( :(

Of course Grandpa will be happy to do it for me, but I wanted to do that one small job myself:cry:

So instead of starting the day with something joyful, now Granny feels like a tired old woman. Guess I'll go do my boot camp routine instead of the ride. Tomorrow's another day.

Bob Ross 07-13-11 09:38 AM

Started the day with an early 25 mile hammerfest...what my wife has come to refer to as the "Help-Me-Get-Faster-By-Kicking-My-Ass ride"

When it was over she said "that wasn't fast enough."

Yes, dear.

Adjusting the calipers is no easy task for anyone... hey, at least you can still see them :-( I have to put on my reading glasses to do the laundry these days.
