17 miles. Need to get some lights so I can do more miles in the evening.
Lots of gnats, swallowed 3 and there were a dozen or more stuck to my sweat inside my jersey and helmet.

Today was the first time since my accident that I rode with anyone else. My friend from work and a friend of his and I rode 33 miles of mostly back roads. It was by far the longest ride I've done since I started back riding and I rode pretty strongly until a long gradual uphill stretch about 25 miles into the ride. The combination of weak leg, longer distance, lost stamina and heavy bike caused me to drop off the pace of my younger companions for a while. But they waited at the next turn and I was able to ride with them the rest of the way.

This was also the first time I have ventured back onto a highway. There were two sections, less than a mile each, along the same state route to Macon that I was riding when the car hit me in August. I did not ride on that section. I don't think I'm ready for that yet. It was a very uneasy feeling, but I figure it is a demon I have to face. Nothing scary happened other than just being there. All the cars gave us plenty of room as they passed. But I was very happy when I turned off of the highway onto the back roads.

51 miles, lost 4 pounds, drank 82 oz, ate and rested and still lost 4 pounds. 93 degrees when i got home, no clouds, mild wind 5 to 9 mph. bp 90/56 hr 116. Thank God for A/C. Met a guy on the outward leg when i stopped to dowse myself with water, he said the heat was kicking his ass, but he was going further than i was just not as fast.

knocked off ~35mi from Teklanika to Polychrome Pass and back in Denali Nat'l Park. It was 25F for the first hour or so then warmed up to a high of 34F. I was going to head to Wonder Lake (had sleeping bag, food, stove, extra clothes, etc) but a serious wind seemed a strong potential. On the way out we encountered winds to 20-25 then shortly after that it must have picked up to gusts of 35mph. good call for me. gorgeous day (had a wolf trot within 10 feet and watched a lynx with 2 kittens cross the road about 40 feet from me. sweet)

Okay, first time on the new mountain bike. First time ready to do any riding other than around the block in too many years to be bothered remembering. I couldn't figure out my new cyclocomputer and I wanted to get a ride in before the rain turned the day to crap. So Map My Ride says I did 6.61 miles (road and sidewalk). I felt pretty good. I'm glad I didn't over do it for my first time (I have a tendency to do that). Can't wait to get it out on some trails, although they're flooded right now.

Take some pics of yourself now. Start a log of miles ridden each time you go out. Over the last year I have lots 60lbs and moved my miles ridden from about 2 to 50 and realize it would be fun if I'd had some history of the change. Just a thought. grats.

After a few weeks off the bike due to family obligations, NealH came up for the weekend to ride. We rode a short 18 miles on Friday afternoon and today we got in 62 miles with over 7000' of climbing. I'm not in good enough shape right now to make it look pretty but I got through it, survived is more like it, in 5 hours ride time.

after a poor round of golf I rode 47 miles. I think I may have seen more riders on the roads today than I have all year. I believe there was some sort of ride going on but not 100% sure.
I passed a dude I met a few weeks ago and we stopped and chatted a minute and he turned around and rode with me for about 15 miles before I headed home and he wanted more miles.
He had just moved from California about a month ago and I told him a few ways to get back to where we met up and he could get in the miles, I hope he didn't get lost.

It has been a while sice I could say this. I rode 50 miles today. https://beta.mapmyride.com/route/deta...pen_ive_done=1
No speed records, but a solid ride and I feel fine afterward. I took it as a good sign when I came within a 1/4 mile of my driveway after 40 miles and I didn't hesitate to add the 10 mile loop to complete my half century.

51 miles today, 97 degrees, stopped sweating the last 8 miles. Had to slow down, stop and dowse myself with water. Had plenty to drink with ice and still reached that condition. Felt really good up until i stopped sweating. Avg 20 to 22 mph for most of the ride, maybe it was to fast for the heat. Last 8 miles just soft pedal in a high gear. Lost 2 more pounds. No clouds almost no wind, that's why i was able to kick up the speed. Riding for the second day in a row, took about 10 miles to warm up. Will have my home made goo for dinner plus fruit.

This is my first post in the forum, and I've just recently started riding. I always loved it as a teenager, and find that I still love it today. I'm not overweight at 5'11" and 175lbs, but in terrible condition. Three months ago, I started riding a neighborhood and greenway loop that takes me 8 miles. On the first day, I thought I was going to die. Now, my time is quicker, the distance is a bit longer, and I hardly break a sweat. I'm ready to take on longer rides, and looking forward to my first 20-miler. Due to a hectic job and family life, I'm only able to get out 2-3 times per week, and can probably do the longer rides only 1 day a week.

I'm also riding a VERY old "Spalding" dept store bike....weighs in at about 32 lbs, but I manage to cruise at 17-19 on the flat portion of the greenway. I'm shopping for something a little quicker so I can have a chance of keeping up in a group ride.

I appreciate all the great advice on this forum. It's great to see so many people in their 50's committed to riding (although some of you appear to be riding until committed!)

Regards,

WMark

"Flat" Lighthouse Century on the tandem. Last 25 miles or so were pretty darn hot and my stoker, albeit wasted, hung in. We were a bit undertrained.

Good going, my first road bike purchase last year was a 1970s Sears Free Spirit with steel wheels, weighs in at 34 pounds. Once i got it up to speed was like driving a truck, it has an extra long stem so i was in a more upright position. Moved on to better bikes once i got some miles under my belt. Good cheap bike to start and is still very ride worthy.

I went for a really nice ride at about 5:30 am - the full moon was still up and it was gloriously COOL temperatures. Now I'm watching the sunrise over the intracoastal waterway out my window as I type this - it's magnificent!

In extreme back pain all night long. The Vicodin didn't even touch it. My back surgery will be October 12 - sure hope it solves this pain. Going to be hard to ride today after being in pain all night long and not sleeping!! Going to go and stretch, as that seems to help a bit.
