Another sweet riding day at Atlantic City. I put in about 25 sweet miles..Also, I was kicking it pretty nice on part of the Broadwalk where mostly runners and bikers be at. Until I saw this...

Then I eased it down a bit.. I have yet to run across any inclines..

The Competition got a sweet smooth ride too...

My ride today was very good very hot/humid but no wind to speak of, I rode with my usual Thursday ride partners (Jim and Dick) today.
Miles today: 52+
Mileage this month APRIL: 665+
Mileage this year: 2673+
Percent of 2011 goal achieved: 38%
Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: -3 days
Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +246 miles
Average miles per ride this year: 37+ (best ever)
Average miles per ride this month: 51+ (best ever)
Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 4326, this could very well be an 800 mile month (best ever) and an 8,000 mile year (best ever) is not out of reach.

We had great weather this morning, 73⁰F when I left home at 8:00 AM and 85⁰F with no wind when I got back. Met my friends Richard and Jim at the trail head and we rode north on the trail to Mandarin where we do about a 4 mile loop, then back to the trail and Panera Bread for bagels and iced tea and coffee. We rode north through Heathrow which was very shady and cool and picturesque. We then took Orange Ave. to Deer Path and turned around and headed south. We turned west on Sylvan Lake Rd to the northern trail head where we took our second break. Jim and I like to do a drag race across Sylvan Lake Road which is about 2.5 miles in length. We covered that maintaining 24 MPH and I could not drop him. He gets down on the aero bars and just sucks on my wheel. We took another break at the trail head and then headed home. We stopped at Panera where we refilled our water bottles then continued on south. We decided to add a few miles so we cut through Wing Field Reserve. The deer were not to be found today. From Wingfield it was back on the trail and home. It was a perfect day.

Wildlife count today: 1 snake, 4 Sand Hill Cranes and no chicks, 1 Red Tail Hawk.

Tomorrow might be a shorter ride day…it will be a solo ride.

I'm not sure what it means for the summer around here when I need to head up into the mountains for a ride to escape from the heat. 74º is too warm for April! It was comfortable cool up at 5000'.

Finally got in another ride today. I got a set of new Continental 4000S tires and it must have been the difference in the top speed??? It did get a little warm on the way home but otherwise a nice day.

The sun was shining, it was breezy but warm and, most importantly, it wasn't raining-----> got in a nice 18.5 mile ride after work today. I won't complain about headwinds because they weren't so bad and the tailwinds were nice. Recently replaced the rear wheel with a Velocity Heater wheel which almost matches the new-last-Fall Velocity Thracian (24 paired spokes) wheel on the front. They both use the same Aeroheat rims and - this is subjective - the bike feels more alive.

10 mile MTB ride with the club. I took it fairly easy, not wanting to work too hard with a big MTB ride coming Friday morning. It was low 80s but felt hotter as it was humid.

A brilliant ride around my new neighborhood in Taos, NM today. Rode from our condo in town up to Arroyo Seco, which is on the way to the Taos ski area. Rode along Rim Road, were Julia Roberts lives, with amazing views of the mountains and the Hondo valley. Taos is at 7k ft., and Arroyo Seco, about 7.6k ft. Temps mid-60's under clear skies and breezy conditions. I beat it back to town by about 12:30 PM, as winds kick up above 30 mph most afternoons. Saw several other cyclists out enjoying the day.

Yes, I rode today.

I rode "only" 14 miles. This was the inaugural ride on my new bike (a 2010 Gary Fisher Cronus), which I detailed in another post.

I drove to the parking lot of my company (which was closed today for Good Friday). I then spent nearly 2 hours practicing using clipless pedals, which is a completely new skill for me. I alternated cycles of practicing mounting and dismounting with longer riding spells. My company is located in Valley Forge, Pa. It is only a couple of miles away from Valley Forge National Park.

The weather today was brutal. I rode during late morning/early afternoon. The temperature was in the high 40's, with a stiff breeze. It was heavily overcast. It was just a raw day.

I did pretty well and was beginning to get the hang of it (the clipless pedals) by the time I called it quits. Like any other physical skill, it just takes practice.

Wow, what a bike. When I did get clipped in and started pedaling steadily, I could see why experienced riders all recommend the clipless pedals. The new bike is so responsive. I chose it for its stiffness--it feels like every ounce of energy I put into the pedal stroke is immediately translated into forward motion.

All in all, a very productive day. I am sure I will be sore tomorrow. It is supposed to rain all day. However, we are supposed to get a lot of breaks of sunshine on Easter Sunday. I should be able to get back on the bike then. I can't wait--in some ways, I feel as though I have been reborn.

I felt like a Boy Scout today. Left for my ride at 11 am, got to the top of Whittier Narrows Dam at the 7 mile mark. A young fellow on a beat up specialized hardtail flagged me down as he did not know how to get where he needed to go. I told him to follow me and i would take him over to the trail he needed. He was going for a job interview. After getting him on the SGRT and headed in the right direction i left him and caught up with an other roadie that had passed us. We started chatting, turns out he was going to the ranger station at the head of the San Gabriel Canyon and maybe up to East Fork. My plan was to go to the Station and turn around and head for home. As we went along i kept increasing the speed up to 20 mph. I was in the lead most of the way, then i hung back for about the last mile or so and we stopped at the ranger station. He felt good and thanked me for dragging him up for most of the way and would be going up to east fork. He asked how old i was and i told him 65, he just shook his head as he was about 45 or so. He was surprised at my 1989 Aluminum Trek 1400 and downtube shifters. I told him it gets the job done, he replied its not the bike but the engine. He continued on and after chatting with the rangers i left for home and the 10 to 15 mph headwind. It was overcast but about 68 to 70 Degrees. Finished with 51 fun miles.

Thursday afternoon, I took a ride on my "new" 2006 Specialized Allez Sport...went 12.3 miles, cruised 18-20 on flatland most of the way. This bike is SO much nicer than my old steelie, but the old bike seems to "fit" me a bit better. Need to take it to LBS for a decent fitting and a tune-up. Last summer, after turning 50, was my inaugural year on a bike (since my teens). I'm ready now for some nice long group rides.

When I was on the old steelie, I was worried about being able to keep up, barely being able to hit 14-16 for any length of time. Thursday, on the new bike, I dropped a guy riding titanium on 3-mile stretch, so I guess I'm ready

Can't wait for today's ride...going for 15 miles today!

Friday was my first big MTB ride in a long time. I had been avoiding the fun trails to make sure I was able to keep in shape for the early Spring road rides, but now that I have a century behind me I can risk the occasional scrape or bruise from a fall in the tricky stuff.

I had a great ride with no mishaps. It is always an awakening to remember how much more intense the bursts of effort required for singletrack are compared to road riding. I was certainly no more tired after a couple of hours of hard mountain biking than after 4 or 5 hours of road riding, but at times during the ride I was sucking wind and groaning unlike anything I see on the road, even strong headwind.

The great thing is that each type of riding helps make me better able to do the other. This is my idea of cross-training. Today I'm going into casual/commuter mode and riding the Casseroll into town to take in the Earth Day activities at the Greenway.

Thanks, You've just described the difference between Nordic skiing and road cycling.

Tom

Going anaerobic after a long uphill skate at 9,200ft ... 20km of this and I'm pretty well spent for the day
Sorry, just lamenting the end of the season

38.4 mile roundtrip from town to the parking area at Waterrock Knob. Just about 4000' of total climbing in 2:52 ride time. I hit a 6 mile wall of pain on the BRP like I ran out of juice. I got light headed several times in that stretch. IDK why that happened but I got through it.

40 miles on the tandem early am at a pretty decent pace. Not much climbing, but that was nice for a change.

40 miles, work related. Pick up check, make a deposit at the drive-thru, rest at the pier, head home. Did some sprints/intervals to break up the trip home. 2 miles 28 to 30.2 mph, 2miles 26 to 28.5 mph, 2miles 23 to 26 mph, 18 to 22 mph rest of the 14 miles, then 4 miles easy spin to home. No wind to speak of, overcast, level terrain. Felt really good, did 51 yesterday.

Another century. 103 miles with 6000 ft of climbing. Headwind the last 45 miles. Just over 6 hours.
