My ride today was with my Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday ride partner, Jim and his wife. Miles today: 52.6 Mileage this month APRIL: 962+ this is my best month ever Mileage this year: 2970+ Percent of 2011 goal achieved: 42+% Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: -4 days Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +343 miles Average miles per ride this year: 38+ (best ever) Average miles per ride this month: 50+ (best ever) Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 4029, and an 8,000 mile year (best ever) is not out of reach. I rode places today that I have never been before and probably could not find them again without my guide and his wife. It was a beautiful day and a perfect ride. Tomorrow I plan a solo ride if the weather is good. |
9 mile ride after work yesterday - not much riding this past week because of rain and having a cold.
Today - rode with stoker/wife on 32 mile club ride on the tandem on far northside Indy suburban and rural roads. Passed the hundred mile mark on the Screamer and we both are quite pleased with it. We have yet to call out for a "Butt rest!" on this bike with double Comfy Chairs. |
NealH and I met PAlt at the Tour de Cashiers bike ride this morning. Pat rode the 80 miler while Neal and I did the metric. We met back at the village green for lunch after the ride. We had perfect cycling weather today with bright sunny temps ranging from the mid 40s to the low 70s. I measured 63.9 miles and over 7100' of climbing in 4:44 ride time. I was able to average a 76 cadence over the steep course and burned 2754 Kj of energy. My average speed was 13.5mph and I maxed out at 50.7. Awesome day and a great ride!
Here's Neal's Garmin file. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/82567664 |
I went on my first organized ride today,http://endhungercalvert.org/bike/ride_details_road.html and did the metric.
I rode with a guy I met last year but have not ridden with him except for the time I met him during the ride I was on. Anyway it was a cool morning, 49° and predicted 9 mph winds....yeah right! Not sure what they were but thy were more then 9 mph. 2800 feet of climbing, ride time 3:48. It was not bad really , most the time we were riding just the two of us with no other cyclists to be seen till near the end when all the different routes joined back up. One flat and stubborn shifting problems that the LBS said they fixed a few days ago.Other than that a great ride! I dropped the bike off at the LBS on the way home for them to try once again. |
94 miles and 8000 ft of climbing. Major climb was Caesars Head-6 miles. I think I've gotten 23,000 ft of climbing the last 3 weeks.
|
Out and back 65 mile ride to a bar "in the middle of nowhere". The chicken salad sandwich, chips and Gatorade hit the spot. The ride was mostly uphill going out, downhill return with 3000' of climbing. Of course we had a headwind on the way back. The back country gets very hot in the summer so this was really the last chance to make the trek. We're tired, but gratified that we were able to finish.

Slacker, you should have done TdC today.

I did a charity century today and it was freakin' windy. 7000 feet of climbing and the wind was so strong on one flat section that people were walking. It was hard to keep the bike moving forward. Over 8 hours on the bike.
|
20 mile out and back with 20 yo son today- strong headwinds out, tailwinds back. Equal parts climbing and descending in Marin Headlands. Kid has not been biking as just got home from working as a lift operator in steamboat springs, and has lost his bottle on fast descents, so I felt like a total stud, until the final climb, when he (on a much heavier bike) left me spinning helplessly as he hammered the last mile and a half. I found him calmly sucking on his camelbak at the start of the last descent, which he graciously let me lead.
Skill and guile will often beat youth and fitness, but not in cycling. |
Did the first "near epic" ride of the year, and it was good:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/82574367 103 miles, 8300 ft of climbing, four good climbs: Edinburg Gap from Edinbug to Kings Crossing Massanutten (the "easy" way from Fort Valley down to the river on Egypt Bend) Thornton Gap crossing into/over Shenandoah NP (the best fresh-paved downhill EVAR!) Chester Gap back into Front Royal Starting the ride, I expected to be totally wasted at the finish, but I didn't have any major trouble at all. I'm starting to feel a little bit better about my conditioning for Mountains of Misery at the end of the month. |
Saturday was a 9.5 hour 21 mile ride. It was the long rest stop at work that sucked.
|
Did 30 miles on the Specialized yesterday. :( That bike is still killing me. :notamused: Spending today doing more adjustments.
If I can't get adjusted so it's as comfortable as the Litespeed, it may go on the auction block. Bids starting at $100. ;) |
A slow 26 mile ride with 2500' of climbing today on the windy, cool BRP. After yesterday's event ride this effort was about all I could do.
|
Vigorous 20 mile out 'n back on the tandem. 20 mph headwinds on the way back turned it into a pretty good workout.

Solo ride today. Miles today: 43+ Mileage this month May: 43+ (I hate it when these numbers are so small) Mileage this year: 3013+ Percent of 2011 goal achieved: 43+% Over/under riding days 2011 vs. 2010: -4 days Over/under miles 2011 vs. 2010: +372 miles Average miles per ride this year: 38+ (best ever) Average miles per ride this month: 43+ Miles needed to hit my 2011 goal of 7,000: 3986, and an 8,000 mile year (best ever) is not out of reach. Very quiet ride today, loads of people on the trail but once I got out to the horse farms it was just me and nature. Just me the birds and the wind no cars no people. As I got back into town I rode by the sports complex where a rugby tournament was being played with teams from all over the eastern U.S. I stopped and watched for a few minutes. It sure pays to be in good shape if you plan to play rugby. Tomorrow I plan to clean a very dirty bike and do some maintenance on it. |
The rain and mist let up this afternoon and I was able to get out for a 20 mile ride. Woo-hoo!
I'm becoming nostalgic for last Summer's drought. (Someone slap me.) |

57 windy miles in SoEast New England today. I know nothing compared to what's written above, but I have not road that long in 18-20 years perhaps.
Rode with my teenage son and friend while we train for a Vermont 4-day bike tour Memorial Day Weekend. It will be their 1st tour. My first in a very long time. I am so looking forward to it. Today was a milestone surpassing an day mileage we will ride on the tour (50). Of course, we will be carrying gear and in much more difficult terrain - but this gave a feeling of we can do this. |
Co-taught a clinic on Cornering & Descending to several of the folks my wife coaches, then went for a 38 mile recovery ride. (Recovering from the 298 miles I rode last week!)
|
65 miles on the Minnesota Ironman. I thought I was going to do the 105 mile route, but there were howling 20-30 MPH headwinds in the first 20 miles and I was feeling fatigued after just 10 miles. Also, by the first rest stop (22 miles) I had excruciating pain in my thighs just under the saddle. I've put in almost 4000 miles on this bike, and I sometimes get pain there, but never like this. I think my saddle is too wide and that, combined with low temperatures (it snowed briefly), did something to me. Time to shop for a new saddle, I think.
Later on, I revived some, though much slower than my expected pace. Much. Even the cross winds were a challenge - it took a lot of work and energy not to get blown off the road. |
Today's club ride drew quite a large crowd. There were, by guess, double the usual crowd, so about 150 cyclists riding from 25, 44 or 50 miles. I rode 25 miles and a good thing too as there was a fierce headwind for the return leg. I was able to maintain a decent pace against the wind that I was satisfied with. Next month I need to begin increasing the distance.
|
I rode 108 km (67 miles) out-and-back with hills and a headwind out. I had hoped to take advantage of the wind on the way home, but the wind switched. According to locals the wind comes from the East in the morning and from the West in the later afternoon. So each way was a bit of a struggle. I feel good if I can ride an average of 20 km/h and on this ride I averaged 19.3 km/h (including a few stops). It's my longest ride of the season. The temp was 17°C (63°F) with sunny skies. About a third of the way, I had to remove my shell jacket; but I kept my tights. If the temp is below 16°C (60°F) it is best to wear tights to save your knees. When I left home, it was just below that temp, so I wore them the whole ride. At home I rewarded myself with a slice of apple pie and rum-and-raisin ice cream.

34 miles in semi-windy conditions. The weather was warm and sunny and I just about finished two big water bottles. I hadn't been on my road bike in over a month. I've missed it.
