I've taken most of the last week off from the bike to recover my mojo. I've ridden several hundred fewer miles this year compared to last but upped the intensity by riding a bit faster, longer and riding every hill in my generally flat area. There has been a very noticeable difference in performance with an accompanying toll on the body requiring more rest days. Today was back on the bike for 30 miles in high heat and humidity and the mojo is back. Now I'm looking forward to a fairly long ride later this week but beginning very early in the am.

I did the same 30 mile loop that the hot shots do on Tuesdays, but today was with some tamer riders who agreed to take it very easy on the hills in respect of the 100 degree heat. Nine of the last 10 miles we rode in rain while thunder rolled in the distance. The cooling from the rain felt nice, but the approaching electrical storm was not. It finally cleared up about a mile from the finish. Good ride, but a little scary.

Beautiful ride on the C&O towpath yesterday after picking up my bike from the shop. Round trip 14 miles from Williamsport to Dam 5. Today is pouring rain, so I'll have to do my indoor exercises this morning before heading to the sweatshop.
|
Rode home from work, running hard from the rain and lightning. I just made it.
|
Rode to and from work today: 19 miles. This morning was very weird: The weather was comfortable. Quite tolerable this afternoon, too.
|
No ride today. Too much rain. And now I'll be off the bike for almost a week due to a wedding I'm going to.
|
What is rain? I've forgotten.

It was a day for a flat ride, 57 miles and almost flat as a pancake. Beautiful summer day, no complaints here.
The flat conditions north of Eugene were formed when the Missoula Floods came down the Columbia River and flooded up the Willamette Valley leaving sediment when it receded. This occurred at the end of the last ice age when ice in Montana was breaking up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missoula_flood |
11 miles to the river and back.

Sorry, I just could not resist!! |
Right. I loaded the bike on the car, hauled it to the River Trail, realized I'd forgot my shoes. Went back and got the shoes. Half hour later, back at the River Trail... unloaded the bike and when it hit the ground it made that dead thonk that can only come from a totally flat tire. I had pumped them to 100 just before leaving home. Couldn't see a problem - new tire, new tube. At that point it became clear that a power larger than me didn't want me to ride last night, so I went home, ate ice cream, drank beer and watched three episodes of Breaking Bad on disk. I'll try again tonight. Go ahead and unload on me about my lack of commitment, I need to hear it.

SUNDAY I rode the Tour Easy 10 miles to a 20 mile club Breakfast Run and ten back for a total of 40 miles. The 20 mile club ride consists of 10 miles on an MUP and 10 miles on roadways. I could tell we are well into the riding season as the computer seldom read below 20mph on the road portion of the ride!
MONDAY I rode a leisurly 20 miles around town on the Tour Easy. TUESDAY While we received over 1.5 inches of rain outside, I retired to my basement shop and regreased the bearings on the rear wheel of my Volae. Wednesday Commuted to work on the Trek 820 as they're calling for sporadical type rain showers |

A hard/fast 26 miles with the missus & two members of the cycle club. Our usual Wednesday morning route was unavailable since road crews were spraying pesticides along the rolling forested River Road, so instead we just did an Up & Back on Route 9W.

Just got back from one whole hour of crack dodging fun. Man, am I invigorated.
My new el cheapo kevlar comfort tires are feelin great on my Giant MTB. No flats, no runs, no errors. |
A good ride today - 7 miles and one big hill, which I almost didn't make! I'm on my lovely new Miyata 1400A. Only my third time on this bike and the old school down tube shifters. I like them and I'm getting better with them already!

After a very warm and rainy July, the air today feels more like September. Lower humidity, temperatures and northerly wind felt refreshing. 40 miles, including several uphill & into the wind sprints that got the heart-rate right up there.

I have not posted here for sometime but have a ton of these 36 mile after work rides and a bunch 0f 50ish mile rides on the weekends. But today I had my first ever broken rear spoke. Rode 15 miles home on it too. Now to the lbs to have it repaired.
|
Managed 26 slow miles up on the BRP this afternoon. Beautiful breezy day with temps in the upper 60s and crystal clear views. 2600' of climbing in 1:55 ride time all above 5400' elevation.
|
Had an important meeting this am, and rode my bicycle and attended in full 50+ Jersey regalia. They were amazed that I could ride 6 miles to the meeting. When I told them I was going for a swim on the way home, well . . . .
Anyway, got in 15 miles, 40 minute swim, stretching and good resistance workout (4 x 20 sets of full body dips, plus other stuff) |
Probably a bit under ten miles. I'm tapering off for a Friday/Saturday tour. Just a hundred miler, 50+ each day. But it is my first overnight bike tour and I am going to a place or two I have wanted to explore for a while. I will have the opportunity to test my equipment and start to pare down the un-needed stuff. It is good to have an extensive state park system. As I travel each work day I see signs indicating parks and other features I would like to see. But I have "clients" with me and can't take side trips.

Ten and a half miles this evening as the sun set. Dry and seventies. Very nice.
|
About 25 miles around sunset. 12 miles from the house I see dark clouds and lightning, that look like they are at my house. Blasted home to
beat the lightning and so the dog is not alone. He is scared of thunder. Skipped diner with everyone else to get home on time. Full on TT speed for the last six miles in the increasing dark clouds and wind. I was sure I was going to get soaked. By the time I put the bike stuff away the storm was gone. I reset the bike computer before looking at my av. speed or anything else. #$%^&*(*&^ |
