23 miles on the Badger this morning t'was nice to beat the heat.

Ruby13 07-03-12 06:52 PM

Got in 29 miles this afternoon primarily on the MUP. Rode about a mile with local sheriff that rides our trail and felt bad as she had her bulletproof vest on in 88 degree weather.

Got in my 20 miles in recurring role of Bike Commuter today. Pretty danged hot this afternoon!

10 Wheels 07-03-12 09:28 PM

58 training miles in the heat.

Not real sure if I was in Texas or Tenneessee?

Yes, I have ridden 5 days in a row, today was different. I went out hoping to find some Zen, and indeed I did.

Hoping to get in a good 30-40 mile ride this morning before the BBQ this afternoon, but 78 degree temps at 5:30 AM (predicted to be in mid 80's by 7:00) kept me indoors today. I guess there is always the trainer but it's just not the same thing.

Too cool?

I got up at 5 AM to start riding by about 5:30 for my 35 mile route. Checked the weather on weather.com for my zip code and there was a high chance of rain by 7 and chances where increasing as it got closer to 8 and 9. I figured I wasn't going to fit one in so I went to bed...laid there thinking I could fit in a 20 or so, but fell asleep. Woke up a few times and finally got up at 7:30--no bloody rain or evidence in sight. Forecast had changed and now it was fine. Promptly got on my gear and stretched and started my ride. At the 17 mile mark I was thinking I only had 25 in me, but by mile 24 I got a second wind, ate a breakfast bar and drank water while riding and did the whole 35, actually, 35.8 miles, and matched my best time. So, 35.8 miles this morning in 1 hour 59 min.

Happy 4th of July to all my fellow USA cyclists.

Nice 32 mile ride on the 3rd. Good turnout for the 6 pm LBS ride. Considering I hadn't been on the bike in 8 days I felt pretty good. Since I have this week off I think I'm going to try and get in as many miles as my aged bod will sustain.

Banded Krait 07-04-12 10:04 AM

I rode 33 mi today on the Schuylkill River Trail near Valley Forge National Park in southeastern Pa. I was having a great ride until a bee or some sort of stinging insect wedged itself under my helmet strap and stung the s**t out of me. I must have been quite the sight from behind--I think I set a world record finding a safe place to pull off the trail, braking, unclipping my pedals, and pulling off my helmet. I am now sporting a golf-ball sized welt below and to the right of my right eye. I just got done icing it down, which seems to have helped a bit. Oh, well--that's the price we pay for cycling out in nature.

Oh, I saw my second snake of the year on the trail. This was a 7 or 8" garter snake. I definitely saw the stripes on the side of its body as it slithered across the trail. He was lucky--three or four cyclists including myself missed him.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

Put in 32 rural miles this morning starting at around 6:00. South winds were already up and blowing around 15 mph with gusts at 25mph. A lot of other cyclists out this morning taking advantage of the fourth of July holiday. The local bicycle club was milling about at my start point getting ready for a ride but I decided that I didn't want to wait around and just took off on a solo ride.

Tried to get out early before the heat kicked in but recovering from July 4th party. Got in 24 miles in 80 degree heat but off the chats humidity. Working towards for me at least a big month weather permitting.

Barrettscv 07-04-12 10:58 AM

Started at 7:15 am and completed 58 miles before 11:30. Temps started near 80f but were 100 plus at the finish.

lphilpot 07-04-12 11:26 AM

37 miles starting at 7:30 this morning with DoctorJ and two more friends. Nice day, although I have to admit the A/C at the destination felt pretty good. :innocent: Hopefully at least some of us can ride again Saturday morning, since there will be no riding for me the following weekend (oncall).

Dudelsack 07-04-12 12:44 PM

Slept in today, then left the house around 11 for a leisurely spin/death march. My 500 said it was 106F, I got lost and went about 8 miles further than I had intended to. Ended up with 33 miles and some mild heat exhaustion, I think. Whoever suggested to carry an extra bottle of ice water to dump on your head is a genius. It probably kept me alive.

otg 07-04-12 01:32 PM

I got 16 miles in the western mountains of Maine this afternoon, beautiful country.

JanMM 07-04-12 07:23 PM

My stoker and I rode 36 miles on a July 4th Hoosiers Out on Tandems (HOOTS) ride. 19-20 teams, all told. Heat advisory officially began at 11:00am. We finished the ride about 11:30am. Yes, it was hot.

17 miles on my GIant Roam. Early morning showers delayed start till 9:30...it was hot. But that was most I've done on ROAM at one time so far.

Happy 4th to all.

2manybikes 07-04-12 08:27 PM

About 200 miles in the last few days. Having too much fun to bother with keeping a total. It's hot, and that's for me. Rode 22 miles today to a huge fourth of July parade and back.
Found a three masted square rig ship on one of the rides. If you travel the world on a real working square rig ship, you have to have transportation when you get to land. So they have bicycles on the ship all the time. They have huge yellow stickers on the bikes with the name of the ship on them. They are all beater bikes, I don't think any one would bother stealing one. The bikes are on the dock ready to be ridden.

Our band played at the Concord, MA festivities today so we couldn't ride during the day. And our neighbors had asked if we wanted to see the fireworks in the next town over, and we'd said sure. Normally we'd walk the 1.9 miles over to the park. Except they'd walked a great deal during their visit to the USS Constitution, so Deb had this brilliant idea of riding bikes instead of walking. Ah, yeah, okay, we have lights on the tandem...

Our neighbors Deb and Larry. Larry's bike is an upgraded and urbanized Super Course. (His "good" bike is a lugged-steel Serotta.) The tandem couple is Sharon and myself, of course.

It was fun.

Gravity Aided 07-05-12 04:19 AM

15 miles before it got up to 102 f

berner 07-05-12 04:38 AM

I was at the parade also 2manybikes. I love the parade and the square rigger. Newport is having some tall ships in, this coming week but they are charging money to go aboard - boo. The boat building school on Thames St. is restoring a large schooner in the big shed, if you are interested in that sort of thing.

qcpmsame 07-05-12 05:37 AM

No rides Tuesday evening due to working late and then severe T'storms hitting at the time I finally got back into town. yesterday was full of family activities with visiting relatives so I had to limit myself to a 1 mile brisk walk. Too long off of the bike for me.

Made a slight change in my route which added a mile to what I usually do. 36½ miles this morning.

Ruby13 07-05-12 08:18 AM

Got out early for 28 miles and the heat was starting to take it's toll. Soaked through and through.

Commuted to work. Got ridiculously hot & sweaty even though I left half an hour earlier than usual (in a failed attempt to beat the heat) and even though I rode much slower than usual (in a failed attempt to avoid getting ridiculously sweaty). My coworkers must hate me right about now.
