Just got home after a day in Manhattan for lunch with friends. Weather was beautiful and got in 27 miles.

Less than ten miles this evening. Rode to a nearby neighborhood and climbed a half dozen short, not-so-steep hills.
|
Rest day, discussed getting my brother's and his girlfriend's bicycles shaped up and what to do for his 50th b'day. Hope they will ride some now.

Did a 26 mile ride instead of 36 to try and beat the rain. Still ended up getting rained on, but still only did the 26 as I knew the chances of rain were even greater later and that there would be thunderstorms. When I got home and was unlocking the door to the garage, I heard some distant thunder. Started wiping down the bike and lubing the chain and it began to pour.

I enjoyed more seasonal weather in Chicago with a 31 mile ride in less than 1 hour and 45 minutes. Another day of 70 to 80f weather and 10 to 15 mph northern winds under sunny skies.

12.2 @ 19.9 before work this morning

I took off shortly after sunrise. The main thing was to see if I'd gotten any better; the last couple of rides had been struggles. This one went much better. I rode up the beach, then inland and up toward the local mountains. Roughly 25 miles round trip, with about 1500 feet of climb. Temperature went up with the elevation, with clear sunlight. Some fog down around Palos Verdes, and a stream of high clouds coming from the south. Lots of birds out pursuing their business, some lizards. The laurel-leaf sumac is in bloom and busy with bees. It was good to be out, and it seems I've gotten over whatever was making me so tired.

Road to work. And back. 20 miles. Peddled reel hard. Tried to brake a sweat. Used the breaks sum. Beautiful whether even tho it was 90 this afternoon.

Just returned from a nice cool ride, thunderstorms all day so the temperatures were actually in the high 70's here. Usually around 93 when I ride. Needed the long sleeve jersey but didn't turn back, rode on between rain drops. Felt really nice, kept my speeds above 16 mph with the pleasant air.

Bill WTF - 70's??? |
Rampaged around the gym after supper doing upper body and core strength exercises and some stretching. Then went out and put in 24 miles. Rode past the place where I had the flat Sunday. Gave the flat fairy a hearty raspberry as I rode past. :p

Traveling back home this week. Visiting some friends in Indiana today and leaving tomorrow. Temps are really nice here but I don't know if I'll be able to get a ride,in or not.

Denver,
Actually it was 73 when I started and by the time I was home and had mu bike inside it was 71. thunderstorms really bring the cool air in, with their downdrafts, from aloft. It was nice, but it won't last. Bill |
Started before dawn, around 5:20am. Adjusted my route a tad to eliminate a dangerous crossing and use one with far more visibility. With this adjustment, my route ends up being 37.2 miles instead of 36 miles. Had my best overall avg mph EVER for a distance, 18.4mph, 37.2 miles in 2 hours 1 min.

Wow. When I headed it out this AM my bike computer read 82F and I thought I had ascended into Heaven. What stood out about today's ride is that I encountered several construction crews and they were exceptionally polite to me, even stopping automotive traffic to give me a fighting chance at one intersection.
If my ADD doesn't kick in, I may write a letter to the local paper complimenting them. For all the strife between cyclists and everyone else, I'd say 99% of folks I encounter on the road are good sports about the whole thing. A colleague and kind of competitor of mine discovered that we are on Strava. The turkey was at the lab today trashtalking up a storm (he is one of the most jovial people I know, and it's virtually impossible not to like him). Now with all my other worries I've planned the next two or three rounds of trashtalk: he rides a custom Scott, I ride a 35 pound bent; he's 10-15 years younger than I; dang it, I have a SERIOUS HEART CONDITION and he ought to be at least 50% faster than I. On the rare segments that I'm actually beating him, he should be totally ashamed. If all else fails, I'm going to have my wife meet me with the car and I'm going to go on "auto-pilot" to improve the times. No one here heard me say that. |
7 miles @ 30

Did about 100 miles on the Masi today. It doesn't have a computer so I had to trace it out on a map. (I'd mount a Cat-eye on it but I'd hate to cover up those nice Cinelli logos on the bar, and I've found I use all the taped sections.) Rode a circuitous route from home over to Harold Parker State Forest in Andover, and a more circuitous route home. It's my personal longest.
A few events from today's ride: About 25 miles in I got stung by something under my watch strap. Never saw what it was. http://www.bikeforums.images/smilies/eek.gif There are a few significantly STEEP hills in Andover, just long enough to be a real pain. http://www.bikeforums.images/smilies/eek.gif Investigated alternate routes on the return but found nothing better than the original plan worked out from Rubel's bike map.http://www.bikeforums.images/smilies/redface.gif At one point I had to double back and do some exploring because a bridge was out. http://www.bikeforums.images/smilies/mad.gif At one intersection on the return where I stopped to check the map I had a nice conversation with a fellow cyclist, a woman who came up on a bent and asked if I needed help. It turns out she rides distances regularly, has ridden the Pan-Mass Challenge which amounts to back to back centuries. She told me about that bridge, said it would take a while to be fixed because the towns were fighting over who was responsible. http://www.bikeforums.images/smilies/rolleyes.gif I stopped in Concord on the return for a bite to eat and some water from the public fountain, and as I was putting the bike off the curb to ride away I heard another cyclist behind me tell someone "That's the bike from Breaking Away." We spoke briefly, and he said "That's a real classic." Ah, it's nice to be noticed! The post-ride beer tasted mighty good. It was a good day! |
Got in a short, quick ride between rain showers this evening. Roads were only mildly wet, no major puddles to speak of. Thunderstorms most of the day and another batch headed our way now. Ride felt good with the mild temperatures and moderate humidity, it was warmer than yesterday, though.

14 miles today, saw the front fuselage of a B-57 on a trailer in a church parking lot .
|
37 miles this morning.

A friend and I did a loop up into the Santa Monica Mountains. Down by the coast the air was cool and damp. Farther up it started getting warm and humid. I'm not used to such, and it really knocked the stuffing out of me. A combination of walking and riding got me to Mulholland and then the old Nike radar site. Took a break there, water and such, and then came back via Westridge. Diving back into the cool marine layer was nice, and perked me up. We ended it with lunch at the nearby Thai restaurant. Roughly 30 miles, 2000 feet of climb. We had a good time.
|
Had a fairly good ride today, it is still mild here. Threats of rain and thunderstorm all day, cloudy and some thunder but our community didn't get anything. Rode a fast pace but no idea of averages or speeds, sorting out a new computer. My Specialized unit fritzed out yesterday.

Got in 28 early this morning. Only event of note was throwing my chain 3 times. Thinking of getting a chain catcher.
