Yes, it has been freezing here in New Jersey (and many other places). Since New Year's day I had been off the bike due to weather issues - we had a large snow storm late last week and of course this freaky cold weather. As a result I had to settle on the exercise bike in our clubhouse gym - generally quite boring, but better than nothing.
However, yesterday, when I viewed the weather report and saw that it might hit the low twenties today, I vowed to get on the bike and go - and I did!

It turned out to be only 19 or 20 degrees when I started, with winds of ~15mph, mainly in one direction.
I rode for 1 hour and 15 minutes on a new route of back, country roads - loved it! The only discomfort I had was for the first 15 minutes or so parts of my exposed face were actually hurting! Other than that no problem, except when I got back my toes were quite cold -first time I've experienced that.

To assure that I'd not be too cold, on my legs were bike shorts under a base layer plus tights. For my upper body were 2 thin long sleeved base layers, a mid-layer pullover fleece, and of course my cycling jacket.

Tomorrow will be 5 or 6 degrees warmer and I'll be out there again.

Best regards

15.13 miles this afternoon, stopped by the LBS and picked up a pair of gloves for the colder weather, much needed. Cannondale 3-seasons gloves with the mitten slip over attached to a regular long fingered riding glove. The helped a lot with my hands, it has warmed up a bit, thankfully, 48°F during my ride.

Left Southern California on Saturday for the snow and cold at home, so this was my last ride: A continuous 4500' gravel road climb followed by a crazy 4500' singletrack descent:

27 miles @23 degree temperatures after work. I was planning to just do laps at Hains Pt near the Jefferson Memorial because the paths still have some icy spots on them, but decided to head out the Mount Vernon Trail instead. Went through Old Town Alexandria, underneath the Wilson Bridge, and about 2/3rds of the way to George Washington's place at the end of the trail, when I hit some pretty icy spots and decided to turn around.

What started out as kind of an "eh" ride after work turned into something really fun. Nice when that happens :)

That's a crazy scary looking trail. Awesome! But those tiny pegs holding up the edges don't look like they'll last too long.

An hour on the trainer today - after a few days off. Was good to get the legs spinning again.

Did a 37 mile ride in Tucson, my third ride since October. Exhausted. Chafed thighs. :( Never have had chafing before.

16.1 miles yesterday @ 18.9 ave. Worked from home yesterday, so, rather than a 5k run before work I started early then rode just before lunch.

It is a formidable trail. One on which it is better not to take chances.

Despite the ephemeral appearance of the undoubtedly modern pegs and other supporting structure this path has been there since completed in 1864!

Day out to Hadfield, Derbyshire again.

Began for me in heavy rain cycling 5 miles to the train station in about 6C.

Was totally soaked by the time I got there and my hands were pretty cold tho I have Louis Garneau gloves they get wet very easily.

At least had a warm train to sit in for half an hour but when we got to Hadfield it was much colder and my hands were pretty sore from the cold. Had to wrap them in my partner's warm woolly hat which warmed them up no end.

Went to Bottoms Quarry briefly and we had planned to go on the Longdendale Trail which was built when the railway extending from Hadfield to Sheffield via the Woodhead Tunnels was closed and taken up, in hindsight now considered a very foolish move as now the narrow Woodhead Pass now has to cope with heavy lorry and car traffic and is often closed by snow in winter.

But we decided to go round the Reservoirs instead which had a nice stony track good for off road bikes.

This led us up near Tintwistle Knarr so my partner decided we should go up to the actual quarry which is reached by a hard slog up a slippery treacherous path which I walked rather than rode up as it was uphill and am not that fit.

I found how slippery it was when I tried to ride back down and ended up on the deck twice :/

It was rather stormy up there and TR also has wispy trails of mist which happens when it has been very cold and warms up during the day.

The sky did clear though and ended up very sunny :)

Also the picture of the wall showing stone which was individually hand crafted by quarry workers about 100 years ago, and there were thousands of them needed to build the reservoirs from stone taken from the quarries in the area.

Early winter snow as well :)

I had a scheduled metric century charity ride this morning, but my teammate's wife scheduled something for them for early this afternoon. Not enough to finish the metric century so we did the 38 mile option instead. Great ride with an overcast, all morning, and some brutal winds coming across the open strawberry fields.

Did 35 miles with a bit of climbing. I'm always pleasantly surprised at how strong I feel after not riding for 3-4 days, even though I hate to take that much time off. Seems my "part time" post-retirement job isn't all that part time right now.

36 miles on the Hawthorne Trail. I enjoy the solitude of the last several mlles into Hawthorne. It was soggy, humid, about 72 degrees. A few large puddles, and I held back a bit. Still, finished in less than 2 hours....But tomorrow I'm going more into the attack mode.

Weather was warm, again, today, up to 73°F. After the rains passed through it has begun to drop. The regular 15.13 miles this afternoon.1H 03M 49S.

Got in a nice 26 miles this morning.

I rode the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail again today. I spent an hour cleaning and relubing my chain and cogs as they were full of sandy grit. Beautiful conditions, lots more folks out, and I kept the gas on for a good portion of the way. About 32 miles total. Surprisingly, the puddling in certain spots was worse today, and I took a pretty nice spill after underestimating the depth of one. No damage to the bike, and no broken bones, but I am a bit sore.....silly me.
