Kind of cold this afternoon, for here in the deep SE, 49ºF, with a slight NW wind. First full 25.5 mile ride on the new group and wheels. Everything was great, shifting was better than advertised.

First ride in over a week dealing with all the family stuff. I needed some time on the bike and rode 56 miles. The temps hovered in the mid 30's and the winds were blowing pretty good at rides end. Good day to clear the mind......

jimmuller 01-18-16 10:01 PM

No more riding here for a while. We got about 5in of snow, and I do not have studded tires for any bike. :(

John_V 01-19-16 07:50 PM

23 miles this afternoon. Started off as a solo ride but my sinuses were causing havoc and forcing me to breath through my mouth, which causes me to get tired quicker. Stopped halfway through the ride and waited for my wife to catch up and ended the ride with her.

qcpmsame 01-19-16 08:24 PM

26.5 miles, pretty nice day, weather wise. The only rain forecast is 50% on Thursday, this week, so other than being cold, it looks very good for riding.

Rode 1/2hr in the fresh fallen snow. Not too cold at 19F. I am currently using the Arctic Cat snow jacket. It is light and layered with reflective piping good for night snow rides. Tonight I wore lighter hiking boots but at this temp my feet were cold at the end. Another good workout for cardio and legs.

Another cold morning but the afternoon turned out to be fantastic. Short sleeve riding again but I don't think it will stay for long. A nice 36 miles with my buddies Frank and Steve. It was an excellent ride except for Steve getting a flat. :(

Temps rose to a tolerable 36 deg so I got off the trainer and out into the real world. 35 miles @ 15.7 with 1067 ft. Managed to nail the Strava climbing challenge. Felt good to be out, however snow is in the weekend forecast. :notamused:

qcpmsame 01-20-16 05:18 PM

Waited out a few showers, mainly in the mid morning, not forecast at all, and go tin another 25.5 miles this afternoon. Not a cool as yesterday, its warming up ahead of the front moving through tomorrow. You guys up the Atlantic Seaboard, I hope that the track of this Noreaster moves out to sea, or at least far enough to drop the snow amounts to fall from those possible record amounts. Stay safe, warm and dry.

I ride three mornings a week at sun rise, 25 miles in a cemetery where there are very few cars moving and at my age if I die they can just roll me to the curb for the viewing then plant me at dust!!!
I also do Yoga and lift three days a week!!

John_V 01-21-16 12:22 PM

Today's weather was a repeat of yesterday with temps in the 70s this morning. Took advantage of the weather, riding solo and the wife being out with friends and did a nice 45 miles.

canklecat 01-21-16 03:01 PM

Did around 5-6 miles Wednesday, first ride in more than a week after recovering from a respiratory bug. Legs felt mushy but okay otherwise. I just geared down a bit and didn't push too hard.

Temp was around 40F and so far I haven't felt the need for any special bike riding apparel, although even at 40F I was sweating in a single t-shirt, cotton sweater and my leather jacket. But I did order a Shimano Storm Jacket from Nashbar since the price was so good and I didn't have any rain gear or windbreaker already. Might order some cool weather wind resistant gloves as well. For now I've been using cheap cloth/rubber work gloves and Thinsulate liners from ski gloves, which would be warm enough if the outer gloves were wind resistant.

First ride in 12 days. Tried out new knee brace (courtesy of the VA), works well. As did the Benik soft wrist braces. Legs were a little out-of-shape but it sure felt good to be back in the saddle. 13 miles on the Sirrus :commute: in moderate (38° cloudy) weather.

16.55 miles this afternoon, Thursday is normally my day off for the week, but I needed to ride and bleed off some stress this afternoon. It was well worth waiting it out between the showers. Cold front is moving through tonight, supposed to be a bit nippy for a few days after this.

Put in a 40min ride on the Trek 820, 30F, gorgeous night. Rode the streets, still a lot of snow.

20.3 miles of Threshold Intervals. A classic wind beatdown along the Narrows felt like I was in a Bob Seeger song -Against the Wind:p Sorry.
Weekend storm has been upgraded to a blizzard so this might be my last outdoor ride for a spell. I gave the trainer bike some love today. Pulled and serviced the crank and the freehub body. while I was at it I replaced the cassette.

No snow but winds of 20/30mph and gusts 40+mph so an interesting 30 miles. Managed a 10 mile segment standing into the wind

qcpmsame 01-23-16 05:42 PM

Only 16.55 miles this afternoon, temperature was 43ºF, no idea of what the wind chill was, I need to bookmark a website with the chart, winds were 15 mph, NNW, with gusts of 35 mph frequently. Made for some interesting times when a gust caught me as I rode into a clearing, around the farms' fields. I "survived" the ride quite well, thank you very much!

The Shimano Storm Jacket rain/windbreaker I ordered arrived Saturday morning so I did 12 miles on a sunny 45F afternoon, stopping halfway to take some infrared photos. Just a long sleeve t-shirt under the jacket on the trip out, added a cotton sweater underneath for the trip home. Definitely warm enough for most of our mild Texas winter days - I was even sweating on the trip out. Nice jacket, but could use armpit vents. Curious to see how it does in the rain.

My only other jacket is a lightweight parka with GoreTex shell and Thinsulate - the temp needs to be really cold to make that parka practical for bicycling. Even though it's relatively lightweight and thin it's warm enough for winter motorcycling down to the 20s (not counting wind chill) - done it several times when I rode a motorcycle.

Cabin fever was setting in so despite the swollen hand and sore arms I took the Roubaix out for 8.1 miles. A few IBU's (I'm not supposed to take those, bad for my kidneys) and deal with the rest later.

I still don't see the rheumatologist until January 29 and have been depending on prednisone from the VA to get me through until then. But getting meds from the VA is like pulling whales teeth. Multiple days of extreme pain waiting for their response. Nothing but the best for our veterans. My government dollars at waste.

But hey, I got to ride today.

Temps above freezing so first ride in a week today. Ten solo miles - stoker wasn't interested in a 'cold' tandem ride. She had already 'ridden' the recumbent machine at the YMCA when we visited this morning.

Today I rode for the first time in 35 years. I would be embarrassed to say how little I rode; but I did ride, and I'm pretty happy about it.

Bailed on Arizona - Carolina with 5 mins left. got in a quick 21 miles by dark. It's been absolutely great riding here every day since New Years Eve. Finally getting the effects of el Niño. Some family relations sent pictures of shoveling out in VA. Lucky I live Hawaii.

Welcome to 50+, and back to cycling. I wouldn't sweat the distance, I went for a grand and glorious 2 miles, on my first several rides, after 10 years of surgeries. There are many here that have/are overcoming more than I could dream of surviving. The distance and pace will come to you, just don't get discouraged because of your first rides. This group of folks will be as supportive and any you could associate with.
