Catching up for the weekend
Sat 80.9 miles @ 16.6 rolling ave, warm up for the Grand Tour this weekend. the club ride + extra. I wanted to ride 90-100 miles, but was cautious with the heat. Sun 50.7 miles @ 15.2 rolling ave on the club ride |
25.9 miles @ 17.2 Warm today 87 deg. but low humidity. Great day for a ride.
|
Road the trike from home for 19.5 miles @15mph. Left early today to avoid traffic and the heat. Cool enough to wear a bike jacket at 7:45am. Warm enough to take it off at 8:30. But there was traffic, always traffic. Reno/Sparks is getting too big. I waited for 18 new Dodge Ram pickups to pass, there must have been a dealer show at Legends shopping center. I need to find a bicycle retirement community (yeah, right).
2015: 2253 Miles ♂ Monthly Avgs: Day 17 - Wk 118 2013–2015: 6927 Miles–Total Avgs: Day 15.7 - Wk 110 |
Weather forecasts convinced me not to ride to work today - so of course it didn't rain/storm.
An easy six miles after work. |
19 miles today after work. Sun wasn't burning and it was only 84. Made the ride easier without it being in the mid 90's like it will be tomorrow.
|
Rode to Old Bullhead and back. Kept it short because impending sibling arrival and wind.
|
A nice 35 mile ride this morning. Strong side winds, toward the end of the ride, knocked me off the road and into some bushes.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=460187 Morning ride for 18.5 @15mph. High predicted at 103° Friday. Ride will be early-early.

49.22 I rode the North Country/Putnam Trail all the way from Millwood to Brewster and back.
At about the 12 mile point I got flagged down by 3 lady cyclist. It's seem they stop to put a little air in one of the girls tires and made matters worse by unscrewing the presta valve right out of the housing! I asked if they had a spare! They had everything that was needed just never did it before, their mini pump sucked but they had Co2. Which worked great it filled the tire in a second and had CO2 to left over. Since I started carrying CO2 I never had to use it. Good to know how well it worked her tire was a 700x23 I'm now sure it would fill my 700x32 |
12.3 miles @ 19.6 rolling ave this morning before work
|
Rode to work today - gawdawful humid on the ride in but hot and much less humid on the ride home in the afternoon. 22 miles.
|
21.7 miles interval workout. Summer in the city 87deg high humidity hot crosswind. I'm not really complaining after the winter we had.:p

High today 99° - 68° at 8am for a pleasant 15.6 @15mph on the http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=460439.
I'm with TCR Rider - not gonna complain about the heat. After winter riding I thought summer would never get here. ADDENDUM: To celebrate summer (and because I had nothing better to do) I took the trike out for a half hour 6 mile ride in 96° heat. Fortunately a lot of the bike path was in shade. 2015: 2293 Miles ♂ Monthly Avgs: Day 17 - Wk 119 2013–2015: 6967 Miles–Total Avgs: Day 15.8 - Wk 110 |
Been stuck on these 35 mile rides since the wife's been in rehab. No difference today. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to get in some longer rides.
|
First day of vacation, and got off to a good start. Heat and humidity finally backed off, so the day was just about perfect. 70 miles, 5.5k of elevation gain in the usual Shenandoah Valley locations.
|
Took the trike from home and played in the traffic - 17 billion cars (well, maybe more like 200). There is a sweeping right turn from busy Sparks Blvd. onto I-80 - the bike/ped lane is separated by a concrete berm, but on the trike I'm low enough I can't see over it. Dangerous spot. I stick the front end of the trike out far enough it can be seen (and the 6' tall bright orange flag) until someone stops, or the traffic clears. Then I scoot rapidly across the crosswalk. There is another similar sweeping right turn at the bottom of the hill onto Greg St. but it's not so busy. Pedal carefully.
The next 4 days should exceed 100° - 73° at 8am. Early rides. 19.5 @avg 12mph. 2015: 2313 Miles ♂ Monthly Avgs: Day 17 - Wk 121 2013–2015: 6987 Miles–Total Avgs: Day 15.8 - Wk 110 |
Overslept this morning so I only had time to do one, 23 mile lap before heading to the rehab center to see the wife.
|
The bad: Pouring down this morning so drove to work. The good: No rain after work so was able to do a faster-than-usual 13 mile tandem ride with my favorite stoker.
|
Just the usual run to work and back. Rode the Motobecane. I have to raise my voice at three drivers today. First was a woman asleep (probably testing) as astop light changed to green and i was waiting behind her. The second was a driver who didn't like my taking a turn through a 4-way stop sign intersection so he had to lean on his horn as he passed me. I stomped on it and caught him at the next stoplight. The third was a woman who tried to right-hook me.
Incompetence is unavoidable, I guess. Discourtesy is just plain rude or stupid. Hey driver, think on this. If I wasn't on the bike I'd be in my car, and you sill have to wait for me anyway. Except when I'm on the bike you can pass me in three seconds. When I'm driving you can't so you'll be stuck behind me until our paths finally go separate ways. |
27 miles on the Diverge trying to stitch together a ride on some of the beautiful gravel roads around here. Had to cut the ride sort, as the bike developed a terrible grinding noise from the bottom bracket. I was afraid I was going to do some long term damage to the bike. I've only got about 500 miles on this bike, but I've had lots of problems with it.

Fortunately I was riding the http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=460944 -quick and agile. 18.5 miles at 7:30 am in 1:26:07 (moderate speed). Over 100° by mid-day. 2015: 2331 Miles ♂ Monthly Avgs: Day 17 - Wk 122 2013–2015: 7005 Miles–Total Avgs: Day 15.8 - Wk 111 |
Didn't ride my bike this morning. The old Honda Civic wouldn't start after buying too much stuff at the Shop Rite and a Miller 6-pack at the liquor store after work; walked 3 miles home without complaining.
Cycling pays off in unexpected ways and times. |

Bike Virginia started on Friday. First day's ride was only 24 miles. Since it was kind of on the way, I detoured over to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and picked up from where I left off a couple of weeks ago, riding south from Doughton Park to Glendale Springs, about 42 miles (plus the 24 for BV.)
|
Two rides in this morning, the first was a hill repeat with 8.5 mi. of climbing for 1800' elevation gain. It isn't a very big hill but has 8-13% incline. Then I loaded up the bike and headed to one of my usual rides and got a quick 16.3 mi. @ 20.3 avg.
