my ride was short, but interesting. luckily for me it was above zero. 18 above. the white stuff on the path is frozen crystals of fog. the phone line across the bike path was a good reason to turn around. i know working phone lines use 48 volts dc, but why take the chance? but it was still a good ride. just a bit chilly. :)

wrafl 01-15-10 02:17 PM

10.2 miles, first ride of the new year. Temp between 29* to 31*. Roads are not bad despite icy patches in some areas. It just felt good to be back on the saddle again. Temps in the next few days would be above freezing, ideal condition for rides.

January 15, yes another great day

Temp in the high 60s to low 70s today, so I got out for another 32+ miles this afternoon. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy. I am 24 miles ahead of this time last year and have ridden one less day (8 days vs 9). If the weather stays fair I should surpass last year with ease.

Allegheny Jet 01-15-10 06:11 PM

1 hour on the rollers with a couple of higher cadence intervals thrown in to reduce the boredom. My wife was using her elliptical machine at the same time and had the Home and Garden channel on.

kr32 01-15-10 06:12 PM

Yes I did. Today was 53F when I left and I was planning on doing 20 but ended up going 30 instead.
My speed was down at 16.4 but I guess for only the second road ride in over two months I can deal with that part.
Something weird is going on with my left knee or something right behind it, feels very tight all the time. I hate doctors so I am going to do my wait and see thing.( I know bad plan but hey...)

I had a really nice 63 mile ride today, testing the metric century route for my club's April Fools Ride. The weather was fantastic, especially compared to all the cold and/or rainy weather we've had lately. It was about 50F when I started from home at 11:00 and it rose to the low 60s during the ride. The sun was bright and the wind was calm. It just doesn't get much better than that.

I rode this route, except I started at the middle at about the 30 mile point, rode to the end downtown and then did the first half, finishing near home. While I was in town, I stopped by my LBS, Oconee Outfitters, and bought a Clif Bar, which I ate there and a Hammer gel, which I stuffed in my pocket for later. I also refilled my three water bottles.

I think this will be a good metric century route for the April Fools Ride on April 10th. Good pavement, nice scenery, minimal short sections on high traffic roads and enough hills to make it challenging but not a sufferfest (saved that for the century route ;)) I have a pretty good idea what the 30, 50 and 100 mile routes will be like, but still need to do some fine tuning.

My new bike was very comfortable, especially considering that it has been a while since I did a long ride. It is going to make a good all day riding bike.

Nice roads, not a car in sight! Looks like very nice riding you got there in middle Georgia.
Bike looks real nice with those fenders too.

Buckeye Jim 01-16-10 04:21 AM

20.9 miles of rolling hills, 16.0 avg. 43 degrees, clear skys.

Sculptor7 01-16-10 01:05 PM

Only 12 miles but the first time out on the bike since early Dec. Much more fun than riding the trainer. Main roads nice and clear apart from sandy debris in the bike lanes. Am sure riding the trainer every day has kept me fitter and think it was a good investment. Rode down to the ocean and back. Saw three other cyclists.

January 16, yes another great day but cloudy

Temp in the high 60s to mid 70s today, so I got out for another 28+ miles this afternoon. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy. I am 52 miles ahead of this time last year and have ridden same amount of days (9 days vs 9). If the weather stays fair I should surpass last yr with ease.

Enjoyed 22.7 miles, 2.4 hour ride with 1800 elevation gain. Great worn out feeling. New territory. Pictures are two sides of Sloan Canyon, this was the top of my climbing.

rdtompki 01-16-10 08:47 PM

43 miles on the tandem with DW. Temps in the mid-upper 50's, might have gotten over 60. Don't know the average speed, but 3200' of climbing with some stretches at 12% worked us over pretty good. We've got a big storm system moving in so the next week will be iffy for riding.

kjc9640 01-17-10 01:45 PM

January 17, yes another great day but WINDY

Temp in the high 60s to low 70s today, so I got out for another 32+ miles this afternoon. Winds were 23 to 30 mph out of the wsw, the return trip was rather brutal but I will take it. I am 64 miles ahead of this time last year and have ridden same amount of days (10 days t/y vs 10 days l/y). If the weather stays fair I should surpass last yr with ease.

1 hour on the rollers today followed by 45 minutes of core/resistance exercises. Hopefully, (fingers crossed) my doctor will clear me to begin riding tomorrow after 7 weeks of recovery.

bobthib 01-17-10 02:58 PM

Didn't ride today (1/17) but did put in a spiffy 45+ mi yesterday at 17.4 mph. Kinda slow, but the wind and the layoff took their toll. The weather was great, about 70. The wind was out of the SE at about 16 or so, making some of the ride "uphill" and some "downhill." I started out pretty strong, but near the end I was fading a bit, and not in the usual way. Sorry I don"t have great pix like Blues Dawg.

I had not ridden since 1/2 until I got out for a 35 mile solo on Thursday. Perhaps unwisely, I did 7 heart rate intervals, and Friday the legs were a little sore. Since I started riding in March I have never had any leg burn here in flat So Fla. But then I've been riding 100 - 120 mi a week. That 2 week layoff really made a difference. My legs were a little sore even on Sat AM. By mile 38 it was uncomfortable, but I finished. And the good news is that today my legs feel great.

Here is the rub. My 70 y/o buddy wanted me to ride with him Sat. I wanted to get out for a high speed hammer-fest, but I was unsure about that with my legs being sore. So then I decided I was going to ride with my wife on the tandem. His speed and distance is perfect for us on the tandem as my wife doesn't ride much. I left him a message Friday afternoon that we would ride with him, and we needed to decide where and when. Later that night she decided not to ride, so I opted to go for the club hammer-fest. I left him a message with an apology.

Saturday morning I got a call as the club ride began. He wanted to know where and when to meet. I apologized again and said I had left him 2 msgs. He said "No problem, I just go solo." He left from his house, rather than driving to the club ride meeting spot where he would have met me and my wife. I passed him going the other way as he was heading home from his ride. When I got home, I got a call from his wife. He had just gotten sideswiped by a car 1/2 mile from the house and he as in the local trauma center. He sustained a broken collar bone and mild concussion.

At 70, broken bones are not good, but thank God it was not a hip. And being his left collar bone he'll still be able to write and do most things. It could have been a lot worse!

Blues. thanks for sharing the great pix! It's nice to be able to put a face to the moniker.

Looks a lot like the area around my home town in Albany, NY. The weather looks like October in "Upstate". I hope to go up there (NY) this summer for a few weeks (escape Fla in July!) and do some similar rides. Very nice.

Enjoy the April Fools ride. Look forward to the pix in the future.

Another day in the low 60s here, but today was overcast and windy. I did take my RB-1, Ribby, out for a short ride, the first since installing the Velo Orange Model 6 saddle. Can't say too much based on such a short ride, but the first impression was very good. No discomfort despite the saddle being as hard as a brick - much harder than any of my Brooks saddles (two B17s and a Flyer). The narrow and skirtless shape goes well with the more aggressive riding position.

I only managed to get 8 miles before it started raining and I headed home, not wanting to get soaked on a cool and windy day. MTB ride planned for tomorrow.

JanMM 01-17-10 05:03 PM

Yesterday and today were my first road miles since January 3. Sheesh - not a Winter Guy - the trainer is a good thing but it's not the real thing.
15 miles yesterday and 12 today. Grey sky, 40F, dry.

Nice Jawjuh pics, BD. Never made to the Milledgeville area during my 8 years in Atlanta. Are those pine trees mostly Loblollies?

Thanks. They are pine trees is all I know. Whatever variety the Forestry Dept. was advising people to grow for quick harvest most likely.

big john 01-17-10 05:54 PM

About 30 miles today with some short, nasty climbs which hurt because of the 100 miles I did yesterday. 10 of us did yesterday's century which featured less than 6000 feet of climbing. I was pleased to not be the slowest one there.
We stopped on the coast at a seafood joint and I had some clam chowder, perfect ride food.

BengeBoy 01-17-10 06:40 PM

I couldn't ride much last week due to business travel, but I commuted Friday (20 miles), all of it in the rain (not too cold - about 45 degrees). Saturday looked mostly clear, so I took the "summer" bike out for a 40-miler, but ran into rain half way through, and rode the last 20 miles in light rain. Bike was a mess when I got home because it had no fenders, and my feet were frozen. I cleaned it up, and then took it out again today on wet roads and light mist for 20 miles.

Tonight I have to clean both bikes (my summer bike and my commuter) and put new brake pads on the commuter. They wear out really fast in the winter grit.

Red Rider 01-17-10 10:19 PM

Since before Christmas I've been so busy with work that I hardly get to ride, let alone ride and post about it.

Today cgallagh & I suited up in our rain gear and took the tandem, now featuring fenders, for about 31 pleasant miles. We even rode into a patch of sun, surrounded by stormy clouds, a striking sight.

Pleased to report that we were more wet from perspiration than from precipitation.

wrafl 01-18-10 12:31 PM

19.6 miles with my fingers freezing again. I think I need a ski glove. Temp at start 28* and 30* after I parked the bike. Slippery roads in some spots due to black ice, otherwise it was a nice morning ride.

kr32 01-18-10 04:02 PM

36.86 on a out and back on the Indian Head Rail Trail today at 53F when I left and 51F when I returned, nice!
Speed seems to be slow though, there was a head wind which seemed constant at all directions. Why is that?
Longest ride so far in 2010.

Wildlife count...a few squirrels.
