Stunningly beautiful day to ride. Mid 20's and the sky so blue it almost hurts to look at. I rode past a farm where in the summer, I could 'taste' the air. Today the wind blowing across the open fields made me work a bit. But still, a great ride.

Dressed up in my commuting clothing, temps around 23°. Tried my regular bike, a Giant Cypress DX with road tires, and that was a no-go. Went back and got on my sons MB. That was better, a bit more stable but the streets are abot 98% snopacked and rough as all heck. I went a mile out and back for a 2.5 mile ride, my shortest ever.
Maybe with studded tires I'd feel safe going over 7 to 8 mph, but without them I'm afraid I'm going to have to wait a few days until the higher temps melt the snow. Well, at least I tried. :-) |

Welcome...good to have another So Cal rider here. I rode the River Trail yesterday as well, but I did the upper half in San Berdoo/Riverside. Congrats on the ride and keep with it!

:( Didn't get to ride today. It was 29  overnight, and never got out of the 40s today. Wind out of the north at 15.
The plan was to ride a Metric today in celebration of my 62nd B'day today, followed by a party at the house tonight. Unfortunatly the weather got colder all week, and people kept dropping out. When I saw it was going to be in the 30's overnight, I cancelled the ride on wed. My grandson is still in the hospital, so we decided to cancel the party too. I'll reschedule the whole enchilada when the weather warms and the grandson comes home! |
The wife and I got in 22 miles today, chilly but sunny, it's nice to get off the trainer and on the bicycle! :)

Saturday did a 42 mile ride with temps in the low 50s. Sunday, it started out cool and foggy. We rode to the coast over Skyline 50 miles with 3500 feet of climbing. Temps were in the low 60s and a beautiful day for riding in the redwoods. Here is a pic of a friend and my wife at the coast.

20 mi yesterday.. 15F with the strongest wind I have rode in this winter. Gusts to 23+ MPH.. slowest average I've ridden for some yrs. But was a great workout.. and very enjoyable.

Gorgeous morning in the mid 40s. Went for an hour and a half. Met a nice couple from Virginia at the trailhead for Bur Sage. They are travelling the country. He had just come down from an Elk hunt in NM where he dropped a 7X7 Bull elk. Fun people. Great start to the week.

First ride since a snowstorm last Friday. 34F and sunny with no wind. Great day for a ride. A late start gave me about and hour to ride. There were some snow covered stretches on the MUT where the sun never melted it away, but at 34 degrees it was soft and slushy. I unclipped and rode on the platform side of my pedals anyway. No problem at all. On the return trip it had apparently gotten a little colder.... and just as I was coming to the end of a snowy stretch and contemplating clipping back into my pedals... well the next thing I knew I was lying on the ground after hitting my left knee and sliding just a bit. No damage except for a bruised knee and a slightly abraded left grip. I walked off the soreness in my knee and managed to get home in one piece.
40F temps promised later in the week...I think I will stay off snow...could have been much worse. Pete |
43 miles Monday and with any luck I will get my build finished today and get in a few more "Test" Miles.

January 8, 9, 10, 11 no to cold January 12, yes nice day Temp in the low 50s today, so I got out for 29+ miles this afternoon. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer so I think I will try to get in a long ride day. Interesting ride today, on my return ride I started to see police cars at all of the intersection then 2 helicopters started buzzing overhead, one police one TV channel, then police cars were driving up and down the bike trail. I stopped at the county softball complex to see what was going on and was informed that someone was in the area with an assault rifle. Don't know if that was true but there sure was a lot of police activity in the area. Rode on home and didn't get shot. 0 Gopher Tortoises today 5 Sandhill cranes 0 Deer 29..29 (s)miles today 151.35 (s)miles this month 151.35 (s)miles this year 5 ride day(s) this month (Jan.) http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...471837&thumb=1 |
I hit the gym at work. 30 minutes on the stationary recumbent bike in fat burn mode at 110 bpm and 90 to 100 rpm. Then 20 minutes on assorted weight machines. Then another 30 minutes on the stationary recumbent bike in hill mode at 100 to 140 bpm and 85 to 100 rpm.

19 degrees this morning, record coldest ride ever for me! Rode in to work (8+ miles), sweating like a pig in my new insulated drawers! Ha! Haven't ridden in weeks due to cold temps, flu, and being a general winter weenie! Man, have I missed it! Come on Spring!

1/13/10 got in about a hour on the mtb, went to the post office to mail a bill and then kept going for a while. Temps were high 30'sF.
Felt good to get the legs turning. |
Cycling class last night for 2 hours. Was able to do most of the work for the A and B groups except the high cadence and out of the saddle efforts. The fused ankle is healing nicely and my pedal stroke is smoothing out. The cadence form is coming back, as I was able to complete the spin up pyramid topping out at 140 rpm for 1 minute. At this time last year I would have been able to hold 155 rpm for a minute at the top of the drill.

Beautiful day in NJ. Lower 40's, no wind and blue skies. Met with four of my buddies and we went for a great 41 miles ride in Hunterdon County. About 1400' ascent and 16 mph avg. Pretty good average for all the time we spent talking with each other. ;)

Finally! After almost 2 weeks I was able to get out again. Part due to cold, part to rain, part to work, part to staying with my grandson. Did 40 miles, which included about 6 heart rate intervals. I was using the workout feature on my new Garmin 305 and I had to stop and start it several times to get it to do what I wanted. I ended up having 5 or 6 downloads for the trip.
I do 90% heart reate intervals once a week: 6 min at 90-95% max heart rate, then 2 min rest, repeated 6 times. I finally got the workout set right so that when I reach the target hr the 6 min timer starts. When that ends the 2 min rest starts. After that the unit waits until I hit 90% again before starting the next 6 min ride. Works nice. THe only problem was that it chopped the ride up because I was stopping and restarting the workout. The other problems I have is that I got a new laptop. It is a new Lenovo with a 64 bit processor and it came with Windows 7. It was nice and fast, but not compatible with a bunch of my specialty printers and software for work. Garmin TC loads, but I cant get it to commmunicate properly. I get a failure message after each upload/download. |

Bummed a bit yesterday because it rained and I missed our group ride. Today I was in the shed re-greasing the bearings in an extra set of wheels when a friend called and asked if I wanted to go for a ride. Got over to his house and he tossed my bike on the back of his car and off we went. I asked where we were going and he said we were going to do a little climb. Stopped at the parking lot at the bottom of the road leading up to Idyllwild at about 1800 feet. Two hours later we made it to 15 miles to Mountain Center at about 4500 feet. It started out about perfect at 61 degrees but at 4400 feet it was 41 and I wasn’t dressed for it. The ride down was great as I hit 45 MPH and the Lapierre was steady as a rock. I did feel a bit tricked because my friend knows I hate climbing but it was worth it. Now if I can just drag Metric man up there one of these weekends. Ended with 31 miles with about 2700 feet of climbing.
