30 Miles, started out very hot, but 1/2 way out some clouds came in with lightning and very loud thunder. Only felt a few rain drops.

Nice and sunny skies this morning with 0% chance of rain until noon. At least that's what they said. Met my buddy Frankie to do our 60 mile, Saturday ride and took off talking about a trip to Italy that we are taking next year. All is well! :D So, around 9:30 and 26 miles into the ride, it starts to get dark and starts raining. From the looks of the sky, and the radar, it didn't look as if this was going to go away any time soon so I went home, took a shower and the rain stops and the the sun comes out. Sometimes, I just can't win!

I just asked because I usually run out of water (54oz) at around 50 miles.
Hey, look at it this way, John, some day you will be old and unable to tell great stories like being caught out in the rain, 26 miles from home! Good going!

It's been a wet summer here this year (Kettle Morraine State Forest, Northern unit):

Tour of the Valley 2017, Grand Junction, Colorado. 50 miles. Very good family friendly ride which included a trip over the Colorado National Monument (which I didn't go on this time; it would have added 8 miles and about 3500' of climbing!). I last wore this jersey when I did the Ride the Rockies 18 years ago. I realized that if I wear it again on a ride in 18 years, I'll be 90 years old. Probably not!

Got in a good 40 mile ride and just missed the rain. My old riding buddy, Lou, joined me today. He hasn't ridden in quite a while so we took it easy for the first 25 miles of the ride. He went home so I went and did a much faster paced, 15 mile, solo ride. The wife had forgotten her keys at home so she was waiting at the van for me to return. Just as I was putting my bike in the van, it started raining. Came down pretty hard. Talk about perfect timing.

24.0 miles (38.6k). Another "cool to start" perfect riding day.

Great ride today - 24.1 miles, sunny, too cool (low 70s), clouds came out about 30 minutes after I finished. :) I'm fighting jock itch and chafing, so I'm keeping mileage down, so I can ride more often. If I can ride 18.3 miles on Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll hit 800 for the year, which is very good for me. Alas, I'm being dragged to a vacation Thursday for 12 days, and then son and grandson will visit, so I won;t be riding for a while. Maybe the break will allow me to get rid of the damned jock itch. With a little luck, I'll hit 1,000 miles for the year before the end of September.

Ride to clear the fog.

Truth is I don't post every ride here, just when I have a brag or a point to make :o

This one came after a long weekend visiting old friends. 3 days of grilling, drinking and BSing till all hours. And who can sleep in hotel rooms anyway?

So today it was a quick 20 mile on trails and hills, and peace and quiet to clear the head and the metabolism.

hi everyone!
New to forum, I got a 8 mile ride in after a 12 hour shift yesterday. Was proud of myself for pushing to get "out there" . In the past I would have never done that on a work day. One question, I'm always in the biggest gear on the front, I hardly never ever go to another gear on the front. What does that say about my riding? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance... (P.S. it has 3 front rings/ gears , I think its 24 speed)

ctpres 08-13-17 04:38 PM

15 miles - dirt and gravel, a little rain and kinda flat. With temps in the mid 60's can't ask for anything better. Note: miles on MTB always seems to be about half many as with road bike.

I'm trippin on that canoe in what looks to be three inches of water? Talk about shallow draft.

0629 out the house to LBS for a supposedly 18mph ride. That lasted 6.6 miles then 21mph +. No problem right??? 13 riders and I was the only 67yo on upright bars @ 28lbs after 109 miles yesterday. Took a couple of pulls but it was basically a wheel sucking day at those speeds. 40 miles out we stop, see black clouds and ride right into the liquid sunshine. Like yesterday's rainy ride wasn't enough so might as well do it again. Instead of stopping back at house I rode on to Wendy's for a Frosty, it was 92F by then, and then home for a nice 101 miler.

Jeez, with the Gulf constantly pumping mega moisture on shore, unless one is willing to risk getting wet (or worse), it's tricky to plan for an event-free ride here in FL. Believing there was no chance due to on and off storms, I did 40 hard minutes on the Stairmaster, then of course the weather cleared. Ended doing a very fast 36 miles in almost spooky weather- it got REAL dark midway through. Safe at home, I'm staring at a violent pink and orange sunset, with intense lightning in the distance.

P.S. I really love the new Bontrager Aeolus Comp 5 carbon/aluminum wheels. It has markedly improved the ride quality on the Domane, so for those contemplating an upgrade to your wheelsets!.....

47 Miles up to the mountains, with a long constant 10 mile grade. Still lots of smoke from the forest fires. Lots of people out riding.

Combined 10 mile interval sprints with taco dinner dash. Pretty good combo.

Today was along one...118km on my straight bar hybrid.....

I've been trying to use the bike more than the car. Yesterday rode to the gym then a couple of errands. Also have ridden to work 3 days out of 5 the last three weeks! Now if I can just get my wife to ride her bike when she goes to store that's only half a mile from the house, I could make a tank of gas last over 2 weeks!

ButchA 08-14-17 11:26 AM

Ow... Yes, I rode today. I just got back and just want to collapse!! As I posted on social media (Facebook):

"Whew, what a bicycle ride! Ow, my legs! My brain told my body, "Hey man, everybody is at work! Look at River Rd... There's hardly any traffic at all! Come on man, don't be a wuss... Let's kick it up a notch, and ride the old Fuji like you stole it!" So, as you can see, I failed to ignore my brain, and rode all the way out River Rd, past the 288 expressway and back, pretty much on the upper chainring (52 tooth sprocket) the whole way, going so fast down the hill around Tuckahoe Creek, that my eyes were watering (no sunglasses - too cloudy). When I came back on my street, I saw my stopwatch getting close to 1:00 hour, so again, I pedalled as hard as I could and went flying into my driveway, narrowly missing the little Chevy Cobalt! ha ha ha... 59:57 time and at a crazy 17.3 mph avg speed! I must be nuts!!!!"

26.3 miles (42.3k) in two rides, 18.2 miles (29.3k), then another 8.1 miles 13.0k(). Heavy clouds, got sprinkled on a little. Cut the ride short because of final dental appointment.

None today, on Sunday, the 13th., the wife and I did 15 miles up the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail to see how the "repairs" on 4 sections of the trail have progressed. Found it's been finished and got to ride all the way into Colorado Springs to America The Beautiful Park! The trail is dirt/crushed limestone and concrete mix, it got a few puddles as we've had the rainiest July and August in a lot of years this year!

wthensler 08-14-17 06:14 PM

The road to Williston is long and generally lonely for a cyclist, and it isn't often I even see another one on the ride out and back, but today the unusual happened; I got caught and passed by a guy in an S Works. I'm not slow, but 22+ is just a tad rich for me on a 42 miler. We hung together for awhile, and chatted a bit. This guy is obviously a rider; he slowly pulled away over the final six miles to Williston, maybe by 200 yards. I think for something like this to happen once in awhile is good, because it resets one's barometer. I'm not that bad after all, nor am i cream of the crop!

E53 08-14-17 07:12 PM

I cranked out a quick 14 miles just before dusk. Nice and cool, not much traffic.

Rollfast 08-14-17 08:40 PM

YES!!

Only 82F today, pleased as punch!

canklecat 08-14-17 08:41 PM

21 miles on a hot and humid evening. Cranked out some hill intervals. Set a PR on a hilly 2.5 mile loop that I couldn't even finish until this month without stopping halfway for an asthma break. This month I've improved my time on each attempt. Hills have always been my nemesis, even when I was younger. Tackling 'em systematically for interval training makes the longer relaxed cruises easier and more enjoyable.

JanMM 08-14-17 09:29 PM

19 miles round trip today as a bike commuter. On the ride home, got caught by another commuter who then took advantage of my draft for a couple of miles - but he asked permission.
Don't see many commuters going in from the area where I live. Huge increase of people on bikes in the city but still not many commuters from the 'burbs. At least not on the south side of Indy.
