Question for the people who are riding 20 & 30 miles a day. When do you have time? What kind of pace?

Yeah the prices are getting ridiculous, but I'm going to hold on for at least another year. The market might peak and decline soon. When I go downtown everyone is 1/3 my age and drinking craft beer. I have a few favorite rides that keep me busy. With all the mountains around here you'd think there would be lots of great hills to climb, but they are all young volcanoes still to steep for paved roads, and with no foot hills. If I try hard enough I can climb a few butes several times and dip down into the river gorges and climb out enough times to climb about a half mile in a fifty mile ride. I don't want to move to the coast, it rains there too much. I've lived in Portland and will never go back.

I rode only 17 miles but elevation was 1,014 and my legs are noodles!.

I did something different today. After breakfast this morning I drove out to the main park and WALKED the MUP. I know that may be heresy in some circles. But, I never ride my bike on the MUP anymore, because it's usually just too crowded with the usual assortment of peds, strollers, dogs on leashes, and kids not on leashes. Anyway it was an hour long brisk walk with 2 laps on the 1/4 mile track oval before and after walking the MUP. I may still get out on the bike this afternoon if I can beat the incoming rain.

41 miles with my buddy Steve. All was going well until mile 29 when he started wearing himself out. Took off and went too fast at the start of the ride. For him that's not good.

I am primarily a weekend rider, but it's my top priority on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I make sure I get that 1 to 3 hour ride in before doing anything else. After the ride then I get other things done like shopping, cooking, laundry, etc. If I put the ride off for later, sometimes it just doesn't happen.

Being retired helps (I'm 71). Not that I can afford retirement, just am. I ride every day starting at 8AM(ish) (9AM in winter) and ride a usual pace of 16-18mph. I finish the ride after 11AM at the Senior Center for a free lunch weekdays. Weekends I nuke some eggs and a Jimmy Dean Breakfast Bowl, a single man's best friend. This year I've been averaging 25 miles per day. It's what gets me out of bed in the morning.

23.9 miles (38.5k), a little smoky from all the fires in Nevada and California. But otherwise a good riding day starting at about 68°. Took the day of yesterday, 1st day I've not ridden in over 2 months.

0 dark 30. I leave the house at 630, drop my bag at the office, and ride to the trail to meet my buddy. We ride a 22 mile out and back on the trail, I ride back to the office, shower, dress, and am at my desk before 9.

56 mile LSD ride w/ the wife & a friend, part of a training plan for next week's New Jersey Gran Fondo.

Back in FL, decided to get out after a long drive from Charlotte today. 41 miles on semi wet roads after a late afternoon shower. After last week's great hilly rides, I hope I don't regress too quickly on these flat roads before the Rappahannock Rough Ride the weekend after next.

As a long time resident of Morristown, NJ, I can attest to the excellent and challenging riding all around Morris County. It sounds like a fantastic event, let us know how you make out, and good luck:thumb:.

56.4 on another smoky day. Smoke was really bad in the morning, but by noon it had cleared a lot.Weather channel changed from "Very unhealthy Active people of all ages who work or exercise vigorously are at increased risk", to "Unhealthy Children, older adults should avoid outdoor exertion" Since I'm young, only 68, and a quick 56 miles isn't vigorous exercise, I went for it.

mfhorn 09-04-17 08:32 PM

We don't have showers at work, so I'd be very offensive even if it was just riding to work. I've worked my way up to 8 miles, 4 in the morning and at night. Takes about 25 minutes. Just in the month I've been riding I can see a difference though. We'll see if my 'good' cholesterol numbers are any better, if they even check them at my appointment on Friday. Heart scan? We'll see... If I can keep this up though, there should be some real improvement by my next appointment in March.

Hmm, may have to look for that at the store. :) How do the nuked eggs turn out?

Only did 18.4 miles today, but it was on my new-to-me 2011 Fuji Absolute 3.0. I am loving this bike so far!

Got up at 5:00AM to do a 20 mile solo hammerfest. Had to work a lot harder than I prefer to on a solo ride because I needed to be home in an hour, but also wanted to get a full 20 miles in because I have this ridiculous obsession with riding at least 100 miles every week and I'm going out of town, won't be able to ride the rest of this week, and I was only at 80 miles from the previous two days. Stupid, I know. otoh, it was a good workout, made even more difficult by the insane headwind on the return leg.

It'll be a miracle if I don't fall asleep at my desk this afternoon.

Well, let's hope Irma doesn't do too much damage when she comes visiting this weekend. If she comes right up the middle, as predicted, you guys are going to get the brunt of it. Hopefully, she'll do what some of the models are predicting and turn to the east and go along side the coast.

John_V 09-05-17 11:00 AM

40 solo miles this morning on a shortened track. Thanks to some people that can't follow the rules, the west service road is now closed and that took off about 3 miles off the route. Having to double back on loop a few more times than I wanted to in order to get the 40 miles.

I don't cook so this is simple, Whip 3 eggs in a bowl lined with Olive Oil (the liquid kind, not Popeye's g/f), add cheese, salt, pepper and nuke for 2 mins. You can add chopped celery, broccoli, etc. if you have some. Yummy!

25.8 miles (41.5k). Took the Lil' Tarmac today, not as smooth a ride as the Roubaixs but still a fun, fast bike. Mid 60s to start, mid 80s to finish. Good riding day.

42 very fast miles in late summer FL weather. I don't know how many more of these good, strong rides I'll get in before Irma, but I'm gonna keep riding as long as I can. Amazing how hill training can improve long distance speed on flat terrain.

More bad news on the Giant - the LBS in VA is throwing in the towel on the spoke replacement, and recommending a full wheel by DT-Swiss. Apparently straightening the rim required the spokes to be really tight. Oh well, I respect their decision...

22 miles Tuesday evening. 18 mph headwinds, just loafing along and stretching the legs rather than fighting the wind. Nice evening anyway, felt cooler than the listed 81F.

I'm retired, riding my bike is the only thin I have to do.

ctpres 09-06-17 09:25 AM

23.6 mi - longest MTN bike ride so far. Everything feels good.

caloso 09-06-17 11:12 AM

Rode out to the airport to pick up my folk's car. We have this deal where if they fly out early, they just park in the hourly lot and I'll ride out and pick up the car, and keep it at my house. 21 miles, not too shabby.

JanMM 09-06-17 12:28 PM

Yesterday: 21 bike commuter miles. A bit of a tailwind on the ride home is always nice.
