Rode for first time yesterday in about 4 years. Only about 30 minutes or so, took me longer than that to find and put together my riding gear. Just around the neighborhood to see if I remembered how to ride. Yep, can still spin. Exhilaration may be the closest word to describe how it felt. Yeah, it's winter here (Japan), but fortunately we get lots of sunny days this time of year. Hope to go again today and a few times this week. Sorry, just had to blog this somewhere.

16 miles Saturday, chilly and windy, 47F, 17-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Unfortunately the wind was at the wrong angle to provide a fun tailwind on my circuit for more than 100 yards at a time. Mostly crosswind and quartering headwind.
Also trying a different saddle on the road bike. Nothing particularly wrong with the Selle Italia SLS Kit Carbonio, which is firm and flat with minimal padding. Just curious to try the Selle Italia Q-Bik comfort saddle, which is just slightly more padded, flexy and curved. Felt okay. It might nudge my lower back to a straighter angle. I'll need a couple of longer rides to decide. |
Hill workout in the hood Friday morning early. Made sure to warm up (pre-dawn walk, about 5 miles) first so I could wear just a shell for the workout itself. I found a nice headband light out by the highway while I was walking, fired right up with new batteries. 23F, the coldest I've ridden this season. (I don't know why, but it's interesting to see other people around the region having the same weather.)

I was watching a few cyclocross videos on YouTube that got me all worked up. I looked outside and the wind was down so I got changed and headed to the state park 6 miles down the road. There is a combo walking/horse trail that circles the park and it wasn't too muddy so I took 2 laps. 32F, partly sunny and the trail mostly to myself. I saw a young lady trying to run in the hoof rutted mud and she didn't look too happy. Total miles, hmmm, 15 miles?

Saturday: 35 mile road ride with the missus
Sunday: 37 mile solo road ride Today: no |
First post on bike forums in months, perhaps more than a year. I was a commuter for over 2 years, 15 miles round trip. December of 2017 the company closed its doors and my riding dropped off significantly. I am now working part time and hope to use the forum to motivate me to get out more. Today I dropped off newspapers at the local recycling facility, less than 5 miles round trip, 26F outside. Typically I use my bike as my primary vehicle for errands around town.

Does 4 short laps on 4 bikes count as a ride? Only 8 miles, about 1200ft of climbing. Tough neighborhood. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...307650c0e.jpeg |

Saw these dudes on a short hop on the bike because we are expecting rain and possibly snow in the valley. 32F with no wind. Blue skies!! |
Commuted to work today, will wind up with The Usual ~19 Miles™
|
Took a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway today; been closed awhile due to the shut down. Temps ranged from near 40 F down to near 32 F depending on elevation and riding on the north face. A bit chilly on the downhill but so peaceful with no traffic sans a few hikers and a couple of other bikers. Sun was out and peaks covered with rime ice; beautiful ride.

22 mile solo road ride this morning, the first half hour of which was before sunrise. Wonderfully peaceful. Also brutally chilly.

We had a highway project around here stalled for years because a farm owner and the state couldn't agree on compensation. Bike Highway! (I was walking at the time, but same idea.) |
Today it was supposed to be sunny in the mid 50'sF.
Instead we got an overcast sky, and barely 50 with a cold wind, making it feel even worse. Nevertheless, I cranked out 60 min. on my old, heavy steel Hybrid. |
44 windy miles Wednesday evening. Whew. Felt like all headwind but it wasn't.

29 miles on a ridiculously windy Friday afternoon -- 20 mph with 35 mph gusts. All hills, all the way. Invisible hills one direction, actual physical hills the other direction.

50 miles
I got in my first 50 mile ride of 2019 today. I was actually out with the bike for close to 5 hours, starting at 11 am. Stopped and got a few groceries, stopped at the library to return items, back home for eats and fluids, back to library to pick up a book and a couple of dvd's. At this point I was 3 hours out and sitting at 25 miles. Took a round about way to get home and arrived there at 4 pm and right on 50 miles. My old legs started to really feel tired at 43 miles and heading into the wind for the last 7 miles. Had a snack, a cup of coffee and water and took my dog out for her afternoon stroll. The hot shower felt great! I ate a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs with mixed veggies in the sauce, I made it 2 nights ago, topped with 6 cheese Italian blend. We have an Arctic Clipper coming in Sunday night, calling for a 45 degree drop in temp over night, 55 F to 10 F, with winds in the mid 20 mph. I am looking to maybe do another 50 tomorrow, Saturday.

55 mile solo before next storm arrives
Got out for a lovely 55 mile ride this morning. Just what the Dr. ordered fresh air and exercise. |

The government is shut down and so is my job. However, half price oysters at Hank's Oyster Bar gave me a reason to make a 10 mile round trip at 17 F/-8 C in 40 knot/74 kmh winds. The ride was easy and comfortable and the oysters were great. |
