April 17, 43 miles today, it was another great Florida day, partly cloudy 70/78* weather, and no wind for a change. I rode north into Sanford and looked around the historic area and went to the farmers market then headed west along the lake front for a few miles then turned south to home. It was a beautiful ride. I rode a ways with a group that were doing a 400K ride. They were interesting to talk to as we rode. They had left home at 4 am this morning.
43 miles today
514.8 miles this month
2352 miles this year
73 ride days TY vs 66 ride days LY
5147 miles needed to hit 2010 goal (7500 miles)
I am @ 31% of goal. I need to be @ 33% (2500 miles) by the end of April
660 miles ahead of this date last year

NealH left his Tarmac SL3 at the LBS for some adjustments and asked that I pick it up and hold it until he came back to town. Sure! No problem! But I wasn't going to pick it up without making sure it rode ok after being worked on. So it was off to the BRP for a quick ride up Waterrock Knob, a 8.7 mile climb with 2450' of elevation gain. The bike is a rocket but I somehow manage to make it rather ordinary when I ride it. lol
Beautiful day, breezy, in the upper 60s at the gap and upper 50s on top. Perfect climbing weather.
Here's Neal's bike looking proud of itself at the top of the climb.

This has been my worst week since last year. Only rode two days. Today is the second day of a miserable cold and it is raining out anyway. Took the trainer down from the porch because I thought I would be riding outdoors from here on. Turns out that was overly optimistic. BTW that photo is inspirational.

DW and I rode the 100K of the Tierra Bella Century (Gilroy, CA) on our tandem. Beautiful day, temps 65 to 75. Next year we'll try the full 100 miles which includes another 3000' or so of climbing (one climb!). Good food, lots of other riders to distract us from the wee bit of pain we were in. Next week is the Wildflower Century in Chico, CA. We haven't decided between the 100K or the 100 mi, but leaning toward the shorter distance.

yup 41 miles today on the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia. Nice weather. 71 deg to start finished up at 81. was a nice ride. granted no serious elevation changes but fun. am working my way up to a metric for the Tour de Cure in Tyrone, GA. May 16. My daily commute plus weekends have been really paying dividends. My wife even has been noticing the legs. ;-) Nice....

My wife and I rode the 60K / 36 mile version of the Tierra Bella today. It was her first ever organized ride, and her longest ride ever. Spectacular weather, great people, and a fun route to ride, around Uvas. It's so pretty up there! What a GREAT day on the bike!

50 miles today on a club ride on mostly-flat rural roads. The first 28 miles out with a gawdawful headwind - favorable winds on the way back but unable to take full advantage because my legs were mostly toast by then.
Have never ridden 50 miles this early in the year.

4/17 I rode 48 in windy conditions,15-20 mph with gusts. I headed out into the wind thinking I would have a tailwind most the way back but changed my route midway and came way around and had to head back into it on way home. It was low to mid 60's and beautiful out. Very minimal traffic on the back roads of S.Md. and riding solo was fantastic and peaceful. Legs were feeling it a bit later but all is good. Woke up to 38 degrees this morning and waiting to see if it is going to warm up.

The bike setups are pretty close. Neal's seat is about 0.5- .75cm higher than mine which was ok but did cause some saddle numbness. His bars are higher too. I'm actually taller than Neal though I think he has a longer inseam. So it makes sense that my saddle height would be lower and my reach longer. But for an hour climb his setup was ok.

Well I didn't ride today since I've been driving for 8 hours but, seeing that picture sure makes me want to saddle up. The visibility on the Parkway looks great. Hope its like that next weekend!
I actually lowered my saddle in Florida about a half cm to help mitigate some perennial issues from being in the "tuck" position so long. I like mountain riding better

Bikes: confidential infromation that I don't even share with my wife
Stepped up and rode with the Cat 1, 2, 3's in a 35 mile training race. They allow 4's to enter this year. Rode well until the 5th of 7 laps and got in a bad spot near the rear of the 45 rider field. There were a couple attacks that strung everyone out to single file for 2+ miles, two guys in front of me popped and I bridged back up each time, another guy flatted right in front of me requiring another bridge, when the pace got back down to bunch riding I went to the front and ended up in a break which I should not have been in that blew me to pieces.
The weatherman promised we would be riding in temps of 40 with a 40% chance of snow flurries so I dressed for dry weather. As soon as the race began it started raining and continued the whole race. I was shivering while riding the last lap and a half solo. I'll be back next week and will ride smarter and will stay on.

I went over to the local University this morning to take some photos of the women's tennis match and then left to meet the Sunday afternoon ride a town over. There wasn't much of a turnout today as some of the regulars decided to get an earlier start. It was a perfect day to ride in the mid 60s, breezy with full sun.

I rode with Ludwig, a 72yo former Euro racer. He can still get on it.

We ran across a forest fire though the smoke was never much of an issue.

It was a bigger fire than we first thought.

The Forest Service had helicopters dumping water to try to control the blaze.

We rode just to the left of the fire.

Looking back up river you can see the smoke in the air.
We had a great ride of 30 miles in 1:45 ride time and 2200' of climbing. Beautiful day to be on a bike.

Got in a metric century today. Pere Marquette State Park to the Lewis and Clark Confluence point and back on the Vadalabene Trail. Set out to ride my age - 55 - and just went the extra miles. It was great.
