Second fall in six months..

What is going on here? I've never had two falls within a six month period...never. Yet, this morning on my commute in to work I hit a patch of snow that I rode through yesterday and went down hard. Yesterday there was no ice under the snow. Today, I guess because of melting and then freezing at night, there was ice. So, even with the studded tires the front wheel kicked out, and down I went. The worse part is that a fall like this morning's wouldn't have even raised and eyebrow 5 years ago. But I know I'm gonna have some nasty bruises and be very sore tomorrow morning. I guess the only good thing was that there was no one around to see me go down.

If no one saw you fall, did it really happen? I don't count those one's.

That's why I don't ride on snow or ice. Falls scare me, I'm too old to sluff off broken bones.

One never really knows about this. Was there a grassy knoll anywhere nearby where someone might have watched?

+50ers don't bounce very well.

I just thought I'd point that out.

When your under 25, you bounce.
When your 25 to 40, you bounce back.
When your over 40, you break and hope the carpenters and mechanics in orthopaedics can put things back together to work well enough.

I was wondering if I should post the crash I had today, but with all these old guys/gals here on the forum, it's no surprise someone beat me to it. It's my 3rd in 6mos. While riding make sure were all making the same turn.

I would think the bruises should be a sufficient reminder of the event actually happening...

As bad things are supposed to happen in threes, I'd suggest that you put a mattress on your living room floor, bring the bike inside, track stand and topple gently sideways

Have to disagree on this. Up till I was 55 and I was falling off the MTB often- in fact the rides were called a 1 or 2 fall ride instead of a star system. Then one ride and Although I did bounce- It hurt. Took it steady for a few weeks and then fell off on a rocky trail and the amount of blood that fell out of a tiny little cut shocked me. Then the pain hit- and stayed with me for a while. So at 55 I was still bouncing but not as high. That was the beginning of the end for me- 4 years ago I went road and haven't found out how hard the Pavement is yet. That will probable hurt even more.

Falling on pavement hurts lots, especially at low speeds.

In which case, best to go fast.
If one attaches trainer wheels to each side of the rear axle mimicking a large tricycle, falls become less frequent. Ultimately, a large tricycle, much as we had as children but bigger, may keep us going longer than we might have thought. The circle of life?

Then again, think of the glory down at the rest home showing off your superating road rash while others are confined to complaints about constipation or calcified toenails. An aging gladiator among geritol junkies.

Agreed. That's why between 12/22 nad 3/1 I only rode 7 times. I have a knee replacement that I'd rather not damage so I try to be extra careful.

Now that the snow and ice are gone I'm back in the saddle and commuting to work again.
